A little closet Reno I did the other week for some return customers. I had Installed a set of French doors for a lovely couple back in the fall. They liked my work and discussed having me back this spring to make a closet in their basement area. Here is what came from it. Built, drywalled, 2 bifold doors, and a lovely cedar lined closet with custom shelf height for all their storing needs. Project went smooth and I was able to come back and paint their whole living room to freshen things up with a new colour. I love the smell of #cedar in the morning! Had a great time converting two walk-in closets to cedar this week. Not only is this Red Aromatic Cedar planking beautiful, it smells great too!! We lined the walls around the existing shelving to convert two sizable closets to cedar (only one featured here). Adding a comprehensive trim package (not shown) to the build gave it an incredible finish, from racks to sweater cubbies. We also reinforced the existing racks with braces and metal hardware, to make a bombproof storage option. Cedar closets are an excellent way to keep mildew and moths away from your nice clothes. If you’ve been following us for awhile you might remember this adorable lavender kitchen we finished for a client two years ago. Featuring a custom Mulberry countertop made from a tree that used to grow in the city. We added on to our original design with two more small cabinets featuring similar mulberry countertops that flank a new stove and create a small workspace with intentional storage. At the same time we redid the adjacent coat closet. We installed custom maple shelving to utilize the height of the space for storage, clad the walls with salvaged red cedar to mitigate moths, laid down a reclaimed Brazilian rosewood floor with a reclaimed heating vent that the client found. It is always interesting renovating old spaces like that as we had to take out the original plaster and lathe as well as various layers of paint and paneling. The sun was not my friend with this piece. My husband helped me carry this from our basement to the first floor then out to the backyard. I took a bunch of pictures and hated them all. So I took these in the perfect lighting of our living room. I could not be happier with this Diamond in the rough. I was given a heads up from my sister that one of the clients at her salon/spa was putting out “junk” and I had first dibs. I took a chance and just ran out there without claiming anything ahead of time. I saw this huge hunk of junk and knew I wanted it. Which was good because it was the only thing that fit in my car. She was rough. Her wood was so thirsty, two of her drawers just snapped in half when I took them apart. I wanted to keep the waterfall top wood but that wasn’t going to happen, not without a lack of trying though. I built a cedar shelf for the larger closet half. Gosh there’s so much I want to say about this but it’s just not coming to me. This girl was abandoned and I’m so happy I found her. We built a cedar lined blanket closet in a small unused space. . One of the benefits of being excruciatingly slow at getting things done is that you have plenty of time to think about what you want to do. This space has always been destined for a cabinet, but after finding cedar planks on FB marketplace for a great price, we decided to line the space with cedar as we built. . I love it. . I might even sniff the walls as I walk by. . I’m so excited to get things somewhat put away. We’ve been living out of boxes and bags for over a year. . We found plywood at a bargain price and used it behind the cedar since the studs in that nook didn’t give us enough support for the shelves. . The cabinet face will get built this winter in our down time. As usual I didn’t take a before pic. BUT thankfully I remembered to get it after the fact. Let me explain: there are two cubbies in the upright cedar chest. One is tall and closet-like, the other is small and cubby-like. They both had VERY thirsty cedar lining them. I quenched the closet-like cubby then realized I should have taken a before shot. Storage | Rangement This is our closet under the stairs in the foyer. Originally the entrance to the basement, it was converted to a closet at some point. The basement stairs are now under the back stairs off the kitchen. This closet eventually became the main closet for the previous owner, Madame Claire, because her bedroom was downstairs. When she moved out, the mice moved in. We decided to scrub it out and line it in cedar to close the gaps where the mice came in. Finishing it (cedar flooring, shelves, rods, etc.) is going to be a winter project. • Ceci est le garde-robe en dessous de l’escalier dans l’entrée. C’était l’entrée du sous-sol à l’origine et est devenu un garde-robe ensuite. L’entrée du sous-sol est maintenant située en-dessous de l’escalier d’en arrière, près de la cuisine. Éventuellement, ce garde-robe est devenu celui de Madame Claire, la propriétaire centenaire d’avant nous, parce que sa chambre était rendue au rez-de-chaussée. Quand elle a déménagé, les souris ont emménagé. On a tout nettoyé et installé du cèdre pour fermer les espaces par où les souris sont entrés. I have a long, long to-do list and what did I decide was a necessity? A cedar closet of course. Just trying to wrap up a few of these spaces and mark them as fully “done.” Many of you know how hard that is to do. 😅 Well, this is one step along the way to complete the 3rd floor hallway. And it smells nice too! The quality of the aromatic cedar (but it’s from a species of juniper tree so that is confusing) paneling was all over the place. Tried a few different suppliers. Tricky to get a nice fit with the skinniest tongue and groove I’ve ever seen. Worked out for this small space but wonder if there are better quality options elsewhere in the country. Will be painted built-ins to the left and shelving for blankets, sheets, towels, etc. to the right, as well as a rod for hanging woolens between the two. #housegoals
