PETER SALEM (1750–1816) An African American from Massachusetts, born into slavery, Salem's master was Jeremiah Belknap, who later sold him to Major Lawson Buckminster. When Buckminster became a major in the Continental Army, he gave Salem his freedom in 1775 so he could enlist in the patriot militia in what soon became the American Revolution War. Salem's last name may have been given to him by Belknap, who most likely chose the name after Salem, MA, where he once lived. RALPH BUNCHE (1904-1971) As a diplomat who accomplished the seemingly impossible by negotiating the 1949 armistice between one-year-old Israel and its Arab neighbors, Bunche demonstrated so well that there is more than one way to resolve an issue that he earned the Nobel Prize for Peace award in 1950. From early in his career, he was a militant critic of American society who established himself as one of the staunchest opponents of the gradualism and conciliation urged by the NAACP. And yet in his celebrated work for the State Department and later the United Nations as a statesman and diplomat, he proved himself to be a man without color, an international civil servant of the highest rank. For an even-tempered diplomat, he was a driven man. Orphaned at the age of 11 in the slums of Detroit, Bunche went to UCLA on an athletic scholarship and became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard's government department, in 1934. His research on the political status of African Americans and the strategies of race betterment organizations, utilized in Gunnar Myerdal's "An American Dilemma" (1944), remains a classic and is indispensable to any student of African-American history. From 1928 until 1942, Bunche taught political science at Howard University in Washington, DC, while traveling widely to expand his research on colonial administration and race relations. He later became the first black desk officer at the State Department as head of the Division of Dependent Affairs, helping to draw up the UN Charter. He joined the UN in 1947 as director of the of the Trusteeship Division that helped establish guidelines for territories to achieve independence. And, after his Middle East triumph, he directed UN peacekeeping operations in the Suez (1956), the Congo (1960) and on Cyprus (1964). In 1968 Bunche became under secretary general, the highest rank held by any American at the UN. GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER (1860s-1943) George Washington Carver improved the quality of life for millions of people through his scientific contributions that relieved southern agriculture of one-crop dependency; aided diet and nutrition, and raised poor farmers' hopes and achievements. When boll weevils devastated the South's cotton crop in the early 1900s, Carver urged the planting of soil-enriching peanuts and sweet potatoes. When increased planting created an oversupply, he developed additional uses by creating more than 400 synthetic materials from those natural wonders, including soap, cheese, a milk substitute, shampoo, printing ink and wood stains. Carver was nearly 30 and had little formal schooling before he became (in1894) the first black to graduate from Iowa State College. But his demonstrated brilliance brought him to the attention of Booker T Washington, who persuaded Carver to head Tuskegee Institute's Department of Agriculture and 1896. There, his keen ability to "see" where others only "looked" began generating practical research benefits that were readily appreciated by the undereducated farmers they were designed to help. Carver also published regular bulletins on distinct phases of farmers' problems, such as soil building, raising small grain crops, curing meat and home canning of fruits and vegetables. In 1899, he constructed a mule-drawn "movable school" wagon that he began driving on weekends through impoverished farmlands to teach techniques of raising, improving and preserving foods. With triumphs, tributes and commercial opportunities abounding, Carver never left Tuskegee and reportedly never asked for a raise beyond his $125 monthly salary in 47 years there or applied for a patent on the hundreds of profitable uses he found for agricultural products. And yet he somehow saved $33,000, which he used in 1938 to establish the George Washington Carver Foundation to continue his work for the benefit of humankind. "G.W. MARY JANE MCLEOD BETHUNE (1875-1955) Bethune was an American educator, stateswoman, philanthropist, humanitarian, and civil rights activist. She founded the National Council for Negro Women in 1935, and established the organization's flagship publication Aframerican Women's Journal. She became the first black woman to head a federal office; appointed by president Roosevelt in 1936 as director of the Division of Negro Affairs of the National Youth Administration. Bethune started a private school for African-American students in Daytona Beach, FL, which later became Bethune-Cookman University, where she served as president until 1947. She was the sole African American woman officially a part of the US delegation that created the United Nations charter, and also held a leadership position with the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. For her lifetime of activism, she was deemed "acknowledged First Lady of Negro America" by Ebony magazine in July 1949, and referred to as "The First Lady of The Struggle" because of her commitment to gain better lives for African Americans. Thanks to @terrykoopman for convincing a real skeptic that he could create a stunning 16x20 b&w print from a cellphone. It was the very first print in an on-going series. See more of a tree project at the @papillionpubliclibrary this month. Part of a Black History tribute Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) When Douglass declared that freedom from slavery was only half a victory unless accompanied by a liberation of the mind, he spoke from experience. As a young slave he bribed white boys on the docks of Baltimore to teach him to read, and his thirst for knowledge eventually resulted in a personal library of more than 10,000 volumes. He escaped to New York and freedom in 1838, and later his printing shop in Rochester gave refuge to more than 400 runaways on the Underground Railroad. I love rainy days more than most, but I’m really hoping this is the last sweater I have to wear before summer starts. It’s cute - but still.
