This afternoon I went all the way to @chiswick_auctions to view their Asian art auction previews. My favourite objects are two Chinese famille verte dishes from the Kangxi Period (1664-1722) formerly in the collection of Basil Ionides. The first dish depicts ladies holding fans, and the second with ladies reading. The interesting thing is that the ladies wear identical clothing on both dishes, and the scenes contain the same rockery tables and antique arrangements. Painting sells for over £87,000 at a west London auction 😳 A piece painted by a 'leading equestrian painter of his time' has sold at auction for £87,500 The painting, produced with oil on canvas, features two horse riders in the countryside appearing to go on a hunt while the background features other riders too The auction house says: "He (Munnings) often depicted scenes of rural life, capturing the English countryside and its traditions "He is considered the leading equestrian painter of his time. 🍸 PTA Quiz Night 🍸 A snapshot of a fun and competitive quiz night. We were lucky to have use of the beautiful Barley Mow venue thanks to @workspacegroup @chiswick_auctions - thank you so much. The ever brilliant Rewa @shortandsweetlondon cooked a delicious chilli 🌶️ and Stephen made his legendary (and lethal!) rum cocktail 🍹. Victoria and Jonty manned the bar. Our fab Quiz Master Ed challenged us with some great questions (cryptic tube stations anyone?) and interactive rounds that won prizes for the children at school (extra PE lessons and a teacher dressed a super hero). Single Isolation Day 1124. Early Leicas with British lenses and lens conversions. Some images from my YouTube video on Early Leicas with British Lenses and Conversions which I made last Sunday for the Photographic Collectors Club of Great Britain (PCCGB). A link to the video is in my bio. These were the very first Leicas with interchangeable lenses which were converted in Britain in the late 1920s before Leicas with interchangeable lenses were introduced on the new LTM M 39 mount in the early 1930s. The British lens manufacturers then started to use the new standard Leica mount. images show. 1. A Leica I Model A from 1929 with a Dallmeyer Dallon 4 inch f5.6 lens. 2. The original I Model A mount and the converted mount on the Dallmeyer lens. conversion was done by Sinclairs, a Leica dealer in London. 3. Leica I Model A converted to a I Model C ( non standardised) probably in 1930 with a Ross Teleros 4 inch f5.5 lens. 4. Image showing the non standardised LTM M39 mount on the camera and the Ross lens with a non standardised mount. The former were used from 1925-1930 and the latter was used from 1930 onwards . 5. Comparison between I Model A (33mm) and Leica Thread Mount (39mm) mounts. 6. 1935/36 Leica III with a 12 inch (300mm) f4.5 Dallmeyer lens which is standardised and rangefinder coupled and has a direct view viewfinder. We have just consigned a lovely peridot and seed pearl necklace and earring suite. Upon closer inspection we found a lily pad inclusion in one of the peridot. 2024, cover me in pearls 🤣🐚⚪ Gemmologically speaking, I have two goals for this year - 1️⃣ to graduate and become a GG and 2️⃣ (maybe 😆) set a professional project in motion (in the planning stage rn). For good luck, I’m wearing here my favourite gem ⚪ (gems rather, together with diamonds 💎😆) in a round and baroque shape - the latter being quite special ✨. Even though baroque - meaning irregular - pearls are valued less than rounds which are harder to cultivate, they have something dreamy and mystical about them. Maybe because we can let our imagination run wild and “see” things or memories in them? (Mine make me think of clouds ☁️…) I also like that they are chunks of nacre (keshi baroque pearls being pure nacre) often with nice orient (rainbow reflections) and each one a unique original. Here is a beautiful piece we would like to share from Chiswick's @chiswick_auctions upcoming auction ‘Asian Art II’！ Four nanban seigan lacquer panels, Pieter Holstein I, a cabinet attributed to Thomas Jekyll A rare set of Japanese nanban seigan lacquer panels and an oil painting by Pieter Holsteyn I (1585-1662) mounted within aesthetic movement rosewood cabinet attributed to Thomas Jeckyll (1827-1881). Lacquer panels Momoyama period, circa 1600, the painting dated 1627, the cabinet circa 1875. The cabinet with a breakfront outline upper section divided into three doors, each within reed moulded slats, the central door inset with an Old Master oil on oak board painting depicting peacocks, a turkey, exotic birds and domestic fowl in a rustic landscape alongside a dilapidated farmhouse, signed to lower margin P. Holsteyn fe 1627, framed by a chevron border of Japanese lacquer and mother of pearl, flanked by two small panelled doors featuring a raden (mother-of-pearl) inlay and makie-decorated Japanese lacquer panels of birds amongst stylised blossoms and foliage, all contained within chequered bands, the doors opening to reveal velvet-lined shelves. Each side inset with a matching lacquer panel decorated with a peacock amidst trees, flowers and foliage with thick inlaid chevron borders above and below. Not one but two autograph letters signed by Albert Einstein are included in the October Autographs and Memorabilia sale @chiswick_auctions. Both letters are addressed to Sir William David Ross, philosopher and Vice-chancellor of the Oxford University. They have been kept in Ross's family for decades and then donated to @oxfamgb. Sale proceeds will go in support of this amazing charity. A vibrant colour to start the day! Look at this special basin from Chiswick Auctions. The rounded sides rising to a wide rim, painted with stylised lotus flowers, lilies and ripe peaches issuing from scrolling polychrome leafy stems on a pink ground, the edges heightened with bands of gilt. The lotus flower has been greatly revered throughout Chinese history, with poets penning odes to the delicate flowers emerging from the cold, murky pond waters, painters depicting them in skillfully-executed brushes of ink and colour, emperors commissioning the imperial workshops to produce porcelain wares and works of art adorned with intricate lotus motifs, and scholars admiring and contemplating these pieces in their studies. Claude Venard (French 1913-1999), Nature morte à la lampe, c. 1960 One of the defining features of Venard's work is his use of vibrant, saturated colours. The present work with bold and rich impasto throughout the canvas, exacted at his most expressive period with the use of thick brushstrokes, adding a sense of energy and movement. He was particularly interested in capturing the essence of everyday objects and scenes, infusing them with a sense of vitality and dynamism. Venard's style is often associated with the School of Paris, a group of artists who emerged in the early 20th century and were characterised by their exploration of new artistic forms and techniques. He developed a unique approach to painting that combined elements of Fauvism, Cubism, and abstraction.
