This is Johnson's first solo museum exhibition in London. It is curated by sylvia_theuri . Claudette Johnson (b.1959) was born in Manchester to Jamaican parents. She was one of the pioneers of the Black Arts Movement in Britain. Johnson was a co-founder of the BLK Art Group, while still a student at Wolverhampton University. The BLK Art Group organized the historic First National Black Art Convention in 1982. Throughtout her career Johnson has explored Black women, who have been largely "absent, objectified or caricatured" in art history. She cites Toni Morrison's novel, The Bluest Eye (1970), as an important influence for its centering of a Black woman in the narrative. . Friday quiz because it has been *a week* and my spirit is fried: where is this girl? Name the painting from which these details are taken before you get to the final slide and you get five minutes off rain, darkness, and existential gloom next week. Get it right on slide one you get massive smug kudos too. Get it before the penultimate slide and you can still feel pretty damn smug. I love looking at the tiny details, figures, animals, and plants, in paintings that are so well-known they almost blend into the background. It brings them back to life and reminds me why they became so popular in the first place. With any luck, it will have the same effect with life. For anyone in the doldrums, this particular work didn't sell when exhibited as 'Landscape, Noon', though it was thought critically good. The artist had to bundle it up with two others and sold it to a foreign dealer a few years later. It's done pretty well since though.
