PERFECT TIMING. This year, the Swiss Federal Council decided that there will be a ban on the sale, gift and propagation of Trachycarpus fortunei (Chusan palm) from September 2024. This Asian palm species is spreading rapidly in the south of Switzerland - there it is naturalized and omnipresent. Opinions apparently differ as to whether it also poses a real threat to nature north of the Alps in our country. I have heard and read various voices on the matter. Be that as it may, plant specimens that are already in Swiss gardens and pots are officially allowed to remain even after the deadline. In any case, our Chusan palm has formed four inflorescences for the first time ever this season. That's perfect timing, isn't it? 🙈 I will let them bloom but remove them before the berries ripen (if it is a female plant anyway...). So the pollinators will benefit, but the reproduction is managed. And the unripe, dried berry stands will then make great Christmas decoration for indoors. ❓❓ Do you like Trachycarpus fortunei? ❓❓ And then there is an interesting plot twist to this whole story: "In 2023, a South American palm moth was discovered in Southern Switzerland. This regular fortunei has put some growth on since planting last year. Last picture is when i planted it. I had 3 planted but got rid of the rest to make way for more interesting hybrids and stuff. As this was the first palm i planted in the garden it will stay for now. I have a larger one with 4ft of trunk so if the saying is correct and the smaller palm over takes the larger one this one will stay and the other will get removed. If it doesn't catch up sadly this one may get removed as i dont really want 2 regular fortunei. Lamorran House Gardens St.Mawes, on the Roseland Peninsula. Cornwall, England. Of late, I’ve found myself feeling intensely homesick for Cornwall (which is one of the only places I’ve traveled to that always makes me feel as if I ought to simply STAY), and particularly for Lamorran House Gardens, where its owners have created an eccentric, mysterious, lush and surprising landscape that combines the spirits of Japanese, Mediterranean and English garden design. Now: just a peek at some corners of that garden, which was started in 1982, when Robert and Maria-Antoinette Dudley-Cooke acquired an overgrown and steep slope above the village of St.Mawes. I took these photos on June 27, 2018 and (of course) hope to return to those gardens, where I’m sure I overlooked many of its treasures. As we enter, the Koi Pool can be seen over the waterfall. BACK HOME AT LAST. It was a beautiful homecoming. Yesterday and today the weather was dazzling. Next to the house, the garden showed unmistakingly its "Southern" side. The smells that hit me everywhere immediately took me to the Mediterranean. But we'll certainly stay nearby this summer - we've been away long enough, haven't we? As you know, as far as my planting goes, I also like to choose hardy exotic plants as focal points. I was totally surprised by our Chusan palm, Trachycarpus fortunei. I urgently need to cut off the lower fans in the next few days. This plant has grown so much that I will soon be able to walk under it. What a surprise! Many other things have also grown enormously.
