The bluebells are showing off in my garden at the moment. Mine are the Spanish variety and self-seed every year. The Latin name - albeit for the English variety - Hyacinthoides non-scripta was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1753 work Species Plantarum, as a species in the genus Hyacinthus. The use of the phrase ‘non-scripta’ means “unlettered” or “unmarked” and was intended to distinguish this plant from the classical hyacinth of Greek mythology. That mythical mythical flower, which was almost certainly not the modern hyacinth, sprang up from the blood of the dying prince Hyacinthus. His lover, the god Apollo, shed tears that marked the new flower’s petals with the letters “AIAI” (“alas”) as a sign of his grief. Good morning Monday! Here’s a little shot of what we have been doing all week. We were booked to go away in the van for a few days but the garden took priority. I’m very pleased with this little area & should probably of done it like this from the start. I think my friend Nev would prefer it like this & enjoy sitting here. An English spring sure is a glorious thing 🙌🏻 . And today was one of those particularly glorious afternoons we (sometimes!) get here on this “scepter’d isle…this blessed plot…this precious stone set in the silver sea.” 1, 2- a selection of tulips I’ve grown just for me , Angelique is the predominant variety here. 3,4 - tulip ‘Dreamer’ , take this as your sign to buy her for next season! She’s insanely beautiful. 5,6 - anemone The Bride, and an unnamed double white variety. 7 - forget-me-nots - I’m so glad I scattered their seeds far and wide last summer. The thing I really love about growing bulbs is that you can have a succession of flowers from late January to May, starting with snowdrops and iris reticulata, followed by narcissi and hyacinths, and finishing with tulips and alliums. (Of course, there are many other types of spring-flowering bulbs, but those are some of my favourites.) Forest garden update 🌿 Our front garden needed a bit of love today. We weeded the asparagus bed and added a layer of manure. We grow strawberries underneath our asparagus, but the plants are getting old now and we will allow them to renew themselves this year with runners. It was lovely to see a huge bumble bee buzzing around and pollinating our black currants this afternoon. Yesterday it was the flowers, styling and photography workshop which I held here with my friend Ale of @bohemia_photos. Guests spent the morning arranging flowers with me, then styling fruit and flowers to make a flat lay in a box with Ale. After lunch she spent time with everyone teaching them to style their arrangements to achieve the Dutch masters look she is so known for. There was much talk about cameras, lenses, apps and tripods! Such a happy day that I will remember for a long time. My sixth entry into the @loosegardeners Spring fair is ‘yummy bakes’ judged by the lovely Kelly @garden_days_cottage If you know me you know I love all things cooking and baking I mean it’s all I ever wanted to do when I grew up. As I’ve got older I’ve got more excited about creating recipes with things from the garden like today focaccia breads, one sweet and one savoury. I love preserving my goodies and last summer made me realise I need to grow more! The tomato base sauce was incredible and the jams were delicious. My third entry for @loosegardeners spring fair is ‘best allotment prep’ judged by @4mcds_bloomingplot who has the most amazing plot! I feel like April has been the month for me down at the plot, although I got it in February I have had so many hiccups on the way. Put it this way if it was going to happen it happened to me. Rain, snow, sleet, hail, wind, hospital visits to see family and friends, hospital for myself, a funeral, lots to do at work, a poorly 4 legged friend. With all that it’s made me so grateful to have this space and I accept that I can be proud of this hard work because I have worked and it’s looking good. The flower bed is coming along nicely with bulbs from @jparkersbulbs & @collieflowers.co.uk the veg side is all clear ready for beds, I got a free compost bin (yay!) so I can get that area tidy, and I’ve made a start on tidying the fruit area up. My second entry to the @loosegardeners spring fair is ‘houseplant heaven’ judged by @mr_plantgeek Most people know that I am massive house plant kinda person but when we started decorating and renovating they got neglected and I lost a little love for them as they were so pretty and the house was well …. Annabel demonstrated how to create a masterpiece with British flowers and I showed how to style it with fruits the use of backdrops and how to create the contrast with the light and colour to achieve the chiaroscuro effect. I must confess I was a little bit scared at the beginning but after 2 hours I finally managed to relax and enjoy our day .
