The Action Speaks summit and exhibition designed for IKEA by Isometric and Superflux presented a vision of the future, rooted in tangible action and radical innovations, such as addressing food waste, enhancing energy efficiency, protecting and restoring ecosystems, and more. Examples of these undaunted visions include SSAB AB’s fossil-free steel, AMP’s AI powered robotic waste sorting systems, and Seneca Solar’s renewable energy products developed by Native communities. The impactful and scalable actions showcased combine objects and information, the latter of which is found on floating scrims that also contain key facts about the climate crisis. During its installation, the exhibition welcomed over 1000 visitors, hosted over 80 speakers, and featured 34 company actions. Ingka’s Group Chief Sustainability Officer Karen Pflug said about the New York 2050 vision presented: “It’s ambitious, but it needs to be. We don’t have an alternative. Isometric collaborated with Superflux and IKEA to design an evocative exhibition and summit space that offered a glimpse into a climate-positive future, for New York Climate Week 2023. The second floor exhibition showcased inventions and initiatives already in action around the globe—prescient imaginings on how large-scale processes of human life on earth can be made more sustainable, harmonious, and equitable. Custom, island-shaped display tables took over the expansive second floor space, navigating around structural columns or enveloping them. The islands seemed to float above the concrete floor, a subtle reminder for visitors of the urgency of addressing global warming and rising sea levels which threaten coastal cities. Hanging screens with projected graphics and imagery completed the diorama for each theme of the exhibit, activating the full height of the room and creating a sense of place that invited deeper conversations about climate action. The media’s silence on the criminalization of climate protest has helped to usher in a wave of anti-protest laws that stifle dissent, writes Ray Levy Uyeda. The 2023 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, which warned that the world needs to halve all greenhouse gas & carbon emissions by 2030, resulted in just 14 minutes of broadcast coverage. The lack of coverage does not reflect what most Americans believe to be true: global warming is already harming U.S. residents and the president should do more to address it. Even with a desire for change, there are few ways the public can push those in power to take action. Voters cannot impact public policy through formal means of civic engagement. Climate protests & direct action are some of the last remaining ways to be heard. Climate change is strongly connected with the health of American democracy. In one measure, 289 anti-protest bills have been introduced that criminalize or demand harsher penalties for civil disobedience. In 2012, the federal government redefined climate civil disobedience, protest, & direct action as violent crime. SLAPP suit�s (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) are used by the fossil fuel industry to retaliate against environmental orgs & collectives that organize direct action protests. Despite ample evidence for how the fossil fuel industry collaborates with the police to surveil, intimidate, & criminalize protesters, mainstream media continues to trust & uncritically repeat narratives from law enforcement. The public dangerously begins to see wrongdoing via a criminalizing legal lens and the arrest charge as how to feel about the protester’s action. Media must question what gets defined as crime and challenge its antiquated, false values of objectivity & balance. Climate reporter Elyse Hauser says, “I would think of journalism as less about truth & more about knowledge. It’s like you’re teaching something. In collaboration with IKEA and Superflux, Isometric designed a multi-sensory installation and summit space to address the climate crisis. The first floor immersed visitors in two urgent visions of the future: one dire and catastrophic, and the other hopeful and harmonious. Upon entry, visitors were confronted with a photorealistic, AI-generated vision of the Manhattan skyline on the day the sky turned orange—smoky, uninhabitable, and enveloped by haze. Ominous sound design, smoke, and burning smells amplified the feeling of unease. Visitors then moved through a threshold into a utopian vision of New York in 2050, filled with verdant plants and a monumental moving-image projection amplified by mirrors. Journalism helps to facilitate climate criminality—the belief that climate protesters are immoral, and worthy of suppression—by neglecting to call attention to the connections between climate protests and police violence, Ray Levy Uyeda explains in a new feature on media criticism. Since 2016, public and private police forces have suppressed and surveilled climate protests at Standing Rock, at Line 3 camps in northern Minnesota, and along the route for the Mountain Valley Pipeline. Often, police are incorrectly treated by the media as experts in safety, but rather than enforcing the law, police exist to enforce order. As far as police are concerned, protests are the ultimate site of disorder. Fo example, in 2023 coverage of Climate Week NYC, journalists wrote lengthy sensational descriptions of protesters & brief, vague descriptions of their demands for a transition away from fossil fuels. Many placed the police responses to protests in the first third of the article. The implied message to readers? That climate activists and their demands are unserious, the government can’t take immediate action to halt resource extraction on public lands, and police were necessary to quell any wrongdoing. Instead, journalists focus on the “misbehavior” of activists—whose job, some might say, is to use misbehavior to shake systems into public visibility—rather than on the misbehavior of those who govern. For New York Climate Week 2023, Isometric collaborated with IKEA and London-based studio Superflux to design a large-scale, multi-sensory space for its Action Speaks summit. The exhibition invited audiences to reckon with the urgency of the climate crisis and recognize their collective capacity to make change. The first floor of the space immersed visitors in an urgent vision of the future: one dire and one hopeful. The second showcased actions, initiatives, products, and projects that are already underway around the globe, paving the way for positive shifts in how we eat, move, make, grow, and power. Bold, dynamic typography and textured, organic forms in neon color animated on fabric screens throughout, energizing the exhibit with key facts and context. The exhibition was designed and installed on a rapid timeframe to align with other initiatives and activism occuring during Climate Week. Hydropower currently generates more electricity than all other renewable technologies combined and is expected to remain the world’s largest source of renewable electricity generation into the 2030s. Thereafter, it will continue to play a critical role in decarbonising the power system and improving system flexibility. While hydro is expected to be eventually overtaken by wind and solar, it will continue to play a key role as a dispatchable power source to back up variable renewables.
