I made this fine gent a coat and hat in exchange for a guest appearance on my Instagram. Bargain! Consider this my brief foray into menswear tailoring and also into #selflesssewing 🤓 Pattern: coat is Vogue 8940 #V8940 - hat is #antlertoque by @tincanknits Modifications: started with a size 40, where the shoulders fit well. I added 2cm width through the chest and midsection, but still needed to reduce overlap while adding buttons, so likely a size 42 would have been a better starting point. 3cm added in length, all at the hem, which also lengthens the vent for a better aesthetic in my opinion. Materials: wool tweed from @fabworksmillshop - my absolute favourite coat fabric! In fact we now have kind of matching coats, as seen in the last photo 🤓 Beautiful ceramic buttons are from @todobunto ! I love how the colours and handmade shape go with the tweed! 🌼 Spring is here! 🌼 My first ever coat, the @orageuse_patterns Riga Coat. This was a great pattern for a first go at a coat - simple to follow instructions and a great introduction to coat making techniques like bagging out. I love the smart collar and the cinching belt. The fabric is a bright yellow wool coating from @fabricgodmother bought years ago (I intended making this ages ago) and multicoloured lining bought from @boyesstores far more recently. This is the Sew Over It Vivienne Coat from their Vintage Dreaming E book. I've made it up in a burgundy 100% wool from the fabric guys and lined it with a Lady MC Elroy cotton lawn (acetate for sleeve lining). I made a size 12 all over grading to a 14 (at the bust only). This was a meaty project. A lot to do but the wool made it enjoyable as it was stable and cut and sewed up well. The instructions were actually really good....up until the hand stitched hemming of the lining and attachment to the back vent. Minimal instructions. So unfortunate and sad really. I had to hand stitch it anyway I could see fit. Oddly, it looked perfect and hung without pulls when on the hanger but as soon as I wore it, there were pulls galore! I then ended up cutting the stitches that held the lining to the vent for it to hang properly and for the photos. All in all, not as successful as I would've liked but very wearable and a lot of lessons learnt. My #pamcoat by @maisonfauveuk is finished (well apart from buttons and buttonholes which I can't decide if I want to do or not. It's made out of the softest wool mix coating from @fabricgodmother and lining from the Maison Fauvre online shop. The coat is a drop sleeve, loose fit coat, which is slightly out of my usual style but I really like it and can't wait to wear it out tonight. Keeping warm with my favorite -wool! Bright green for cheerier winter days. I kept this one unlined because I wanted a lighter weight coat option, think wool sweater warm-ish. Glad I did too because it’s been unseasonably warm here. I also wanted it to be able to be comfortably layered underneath without feeling bulky. (It is) Took these pictures on the brief cold spell we had. It’s light enough to wear in the house on very cold days, while great for outside on milder ones, or layered up on freezing days. I’ve been wearing it a lot since I finished sewing it and was excited to see how well it coordinates with my shift cowl. It does gets a touch bulky where the pockets meet the side and front seems, in this heavier weight fabric. If I were to do it again, I’d maybe consider switching them as patch pockets that stop before those areas to reduce the layers. All in all I love this piece regardless! I have been making the coat of my dreams for a few months now and I finished it yesterday (on Valentine’s Day which looks really appropriate for a pink coat doesn’t it?)! Settling on a size was very hard. I chose the Clare coat from Closet Core Patterns and the arms were very tight for me in my suggested size and I didn’t want to perform a biceps adjustment on both the coat and the lining and hope it would still all fit together. So I went up two sizes and I don’t even think the final result is so big! It fits exactly like I had hoped. I still made some modifications to it as the neckline was choking me (so a forward neck adjustment of about 2cm was appropriate) and I added a slit in the back so the coat would be more comfortable seated without performing a full cutout in the back (I used a tutorial on the Twig and Tale blog for the cutout and slit). This way my mom can share the coat with me and let me tell you she was very happy about it. One thing I really like about it is that it doesn’t wave in the front along the closure edge when I’m seated as I decided on the spots for the snaps while seated. It is fully lined and I used Kasha lining for it, which is flannel backed satin, and it is WONDERFUL for a lining. It is warm and sews up like a charm. You could use a walking foot to help with the fact that it slides a bit while sewing, but I was still fine without. It is almost entirely interfaced too as the wool (given by Minerva through their ambassador program) was a bit too stretchy for my coat and I wanted to stabilize it. The wool is just so lush to work with. I loved it. Easy to manipulate and sew, except it was very thick and at some point my machine didn’t want to sew anymore (at the collar junction) because the pressure foot was too high up. I had to press on it to keep it going. So, be warned. Looking back I could have made the inner collar in another fabric, but wearing it open would look much different. Patch pockets and other details… . The sleeves and body of my wool coat are done and its generously-sized patch pockets are on! I think I spent more time making and attaching the pockets than I did sewing the coat body itself. I mean, why do something fairly straightforward when I can drag it out by adding more steps?? . The pattern instructions include lining the pockets (I used my plaid contrast fabric), but they didn’t say to interface them. As big as these pockets are, I wondered if they might get baggy with use if they weren’t interfaced. To give them a little more more support, I basted the “soft” version of Siri sew-in interfacing to the wrong side of the fashion fabric before I sewed pocket and lining together. Though both wools I’m using are firm fabrics, the interfacing gives the pockets even more body to help them stand up to use. To attach the pockets, I slipstitched them to the coat before I topstitched. I just prefer the finished look of topstitched pockets if I hand sew them on first (pic 2). . Sewing the side seams to lay well in the underarm was another deviation from the instructions. Before sewing the side seams of the coat, the sleeves are attached in the flat, then the entire armhole seam is topstitched. Given the angled shape where the underarm and side seam meet (pic 3), I needed to clip into the underarm seam allowance after sewing the side seam to release the fabric that would cause noticeable pulling. If I had topstitched the armhole all the way, I wouldn’t be able to clip deep enough into the seam allowance to release the fabric. Instead, I topstitched to within 1.5” of the underarm seam (loose thread tails in pic 3) so that the remaining sleeve seam allowance was still free, then I sewed the side seam. With the side seam sewn, I clipped and pressed the seam open, then completed the remaining topstitching at the underarm (pic 4). .
