🩷 Pleated Lily dress 🩷 Here are a few more shots of my Pleated Lily dress 😊 Fun story - I bought the fabric and pattern for this around 2 years ago! However, when I finally got round to cutting out the fabric I found it was far too narrow to cut out the front skirt, even when unfolded (only 44 inches/112cm). Luckily I was able to source the exact same fabric again two years later, but had to cut out the skirt rotated 90 degrees. Luckily I don't think it's noticeable 🤭 Definitely a lesson to always check fabric widths before buying 😄 This was my third Make Nine ticked off 😊 I plan to space out the remaining patterns a bit more! Patch pockets and other details… . The sleeves and body of my wool coat are done and its generously-sized patch pockets are on! I think I spent more time making and attaching the pockets than I did sewing the coat body itself. I mean, why do something fairly straightforward when I can drag it out by adding more steps?? . The pattern instructions include lining the pockets (I used my plaid contrast fabric), but they didn’t say to interface them. As big as these pockets are, I wondered if they might get baggy with use if they weren’t interfaced. To give them a little more more support, I basted the “soft” version of Siri sew-in interfacing to the wrong side of the fashion fabric before I sewed pocket and lining together. Though both wools I’m using are firm fabrics, the interfacing gives the pockets even more body to help them stand up to use. To attach the pockets, I slipstitched them to the coat before I topstitched. I just prefer the finished look of topstitched pockets if I hand sew them on first (pic 2). . Sewing the side seams to lay well in the underarm was another deviation from the instructions. Before sewing the side seams of the coat, the sleeves are attached in the flat, then the entire armhole seam is topstitched. Given the angled shape where the underarm and side seam meet (pic 3), I needed to clip into the underarm seam allowance after sewing the side seam to release the fabric that would cause noticeable pulling. If I had topstitched the armhole all the way, I wouldn’t be able to clip deep enough into the seam allowance to release the fabric. Instead, I topstitched to within 1.5” of the underarm seam (loose thread tails in pic 3) so that the remaining sleeve seam allowance was still free, then I sewed the side seam. With the side seam sewn, I clipped and pressed the seam open, then completed the remaining topstitching at the underarm (pic 4). . 🌸 Pleated Lily dress 🌸 Spring has definitely come early in our garden! I noticed a few of our trees and bushes have blossomed, so took the opportunity to have a Pleated Lily dress photo shoot (complete with twirls) 💃 I have been an admirer of Daria's patterns for a while, but this is the first I have made! I love the unique details Daria includes in her patterns. I loooove this dress and I am so pleased with how it turned out. I made a short sleeve version with fabric ties rather than a ribbon. I bought some ribbon but it wasn't great quality so kept coming away from the seam. I made this matching set for my 3 year old using this plaid cotton fabric from @wearethefabricstore. I used the #amypattern from @paperdollpatternco but shortened the sleeves and added ruffles. The shorts are the #serenashorts from #honeybunchpatterns My favourite part of the set are the flower buttons which I didn’t take a photo of on this day. They were part of a top that I used to wear as a child and saved for the right project. The orange in the centre of the flowers were perfect for the orange in this fabric. Something I want to get better at this year is pattern matching. To be honest I didn’t think about it until I sewed the back and front pieces together. I pattern tested the #loveniadress by @thepetitedressmaker and it did not disappoint 💖✨🌷🦋 Im a huge fan of Steph's designs and the quality of her patterns. Honestly, I've not seen a pattern with as much detail and knowledge as she provides. You can tell she just wants all types of sewists to be able to sew her patterns. This is Steph's first baby doll dress pattern. I'm stoked as these are my fav kind of dresses to wear. It's super cute and fun to wear with ruffles on each tier. I used a fabulous @elliewhittakerstudio cotton poplin but next time would like to try something with a lighter hand feel. There was a bit of bulk around the ruffles on the tier (which has been updated in the pattern). Also, i stuffed up with the toile and didn't assess it very well. I'm in a rush when i sew and didnt realise the neckline was a bit gapey. I do this thing where I don't try on my sews until the very end when it's too late to fix easily😅I rectified this with a bit of elastic within the 2 straps (the neckline has been revised in the pattern). Congrats to Steph on another beautiful dress release! The Lovenia is sold in a bundle with 2 other cute smock style dresses and on its own. Ok ok I really rate this pattern 🌷 This is my first make of 2024 and my second #sewthewillow by the talented @cinnamondaisystudio I'm so obsessed with this pattern. It's the perfect throw on and go dress except you can add shape and cuteness with the bows. I also love the high boat neckline. The back is scooped so i don't have to squeeze my head into any tight neck holes 👍🏻 I loved making this dress; most likely because i was working with my favourite fibre, linen. I also flatfelled all bodice seams and bias bound the waist seams to make it just that little bit spesh✨ I didn't try it on until the very end and the more i look at the photos, the more i ponder. So I have 3 questions: - do the shoulders sit too wide on me? - does the low front waistline make my legs appear shorter? - and should i just crop the skirt length?? Would love to hear your thoughts on this! I didn't notice any of these issues in my first one, probably coz it had sleeves, was made in a viscose drapey fabric and it was a short length. 💚 Corduroy Ness 💚 My first make of 2024 and my first Make Nine ticked off 😊 It took me a little longer to make than expected as it is quite an involved make, with the jeans fly, belt loops and pocket bags, but I'm so pleased with how it turned out. It looks like a proper cord skirt! I also found the Tilly and the Buttons YouTube tutorial for fitting a jeans fly super helpful. I cut a size 4 based on my measurements, but found it was slightly too big. I then used a 3cm seam allowance on the side seams and this solved the fit perfectly. He made a bench out of 4 pallets, with cup holders, (I’m clumsy) I made a garden pouf from bits of leftovers and stuffed it with a years worth of sewing scraps! Talk about sustainable, proud to say we really are. It's Me-Made May! I've had a really busy start to the year so I needed to take a moment to consider what I wanted to do for this year's #MeMadeMay challenge. My #memade wardrobe has grown significantly in the last year and I regularly wear my memade items (although much of it makes a greater appearance in the warmer months). However, I've noted that there are a few items that don't really get worn at all. So my pledge for #MeMadeMay2023 is to reflect on why I don't wear these makes and see if I can alter or repurpose them into something I'll wear more often. This beautiful Japanese collection of gingham style yarn dyed checks and stripes in various sizes made from a rustic feel cotton is a joy to hand stitch. Saturday I was invited to talk at the @australiansewingguild in Geelong about my different approach to sewing my clothes. What a great group of sewers and dressmaking enthusiasts!!! This is a side of me I don’t really share much, but I love the quirky and unusual and find the only way to get that is to do it myself I recycle and reclaim and incorporate free motion machine and hand stitching in my garments I was a Knitwit tutor in the 1980’s, my deep dark past😂, but I can honestly say I use these techniques, and attention to detail every time I sew My photo shows my interpretation of the Bog coat which uses 1 large piece of fabric, very minimal waste, and the very patched together paper pattern, as well as a miniature version to get it in my head! Ha ha Does anyone else do this? I had only a bolt end of this crazy japanese linen/cotton cat fabric so I fussy cut the long edges of 2 drops and overlapped the back, free motion machined to give me the 1 large piece of fabric I needed Otherwise there are only 2 main seams, front, then down the sleeves, to make this jacket I added cuffs and a shawl collar to finish I love it, so I’ll probably make another, so much going around in my head! 😁 #bogcoat #bogcoathack #stitch #stitchyourownway #beoriginal #japanesefabric #linen/cottonfabric #shawlcollar #cuff #creativeclothes #dressmaking #ferntextiles #boltends #nowastejacket #nowastesewing #fabriclove #sewyourownway

💜 Shelby dress 💜 Sew for the weather you want, not the weather you have 😅 Here is my Shelby dress! It was actually one of my make nine patterns for 2022, but I procrastinated on this dress for so many different reasons, at pretty much every stage of the process. I'm so glad I finally finished it though, because I really love how it has turned out 😊 the ties on the back especially make for a really easy fit. Fun fact about me: I used to work in a bridal shop in the alterations department! I didn’t do machine sewing, but lots of hand sewing (beading, bustles, bra cups) and cleaning/steaming the gowns. It was great because I worked with some wonderful women, including my mom. Our ages ranged from 20s (me) to 80s, and we had a ball together. So much laughter while we worked.
