The Aruba rattlesnake (Crotalus unicolor) is considered to be one of the rarest snake species in the world. These critically endangered snakes are endemic to the tiny island of Aruba. Due to only living on this island and it’s ever growing population most of the islands original habitat has been cleared. The bearded pygmy chameleon (Rieppeleon brevicaudatus) or also called bearded leaf chameleon is a small (8 cm) diurnal, slow moving, lizard species mimicing dead leafs on the forest floor of Mt Usambara and Uluguru in Tanzania and Kenya. It is easily distinguished from others in the Rieppeleon genus by the presence of a "beard" below the mouth, consisting of a few raised scales. It’s my birthday today! For me there’s nothing I would love to do more on a day like this than to be out in the field and do some venom extractions ! • Because the venom needs to be stored in at -80 degrees in our freezers at the lab, there’s no way we can do this during the current crisis. • So no other option left then to think back to the times with buddy jory and when could still go out safely and catch some vipers. • The venom extraction is part of large project that Jory started recently, in which we look at venom variation within and between different populations of the European adder (Vipera berus). • Photo credits: Jory van Tiel
