Female Long-nosed Leopard Lizard in her extravagant breeding colors. This is a species of lizard that will outrun me every single time, which makes good sense (when I’m able to table my ego) seeing as they pursue and overcome additional lizard species and snakes among other things. It’s nice to be reminded that appreciating wildlife doesn’t always necessitate physical contact with them. #lizard #leopardlizard #reptile #herps #wildlife #squamata #reptilia #gambelia #herpetology

🐆 Leopard lizard! 🦎 Gambelia wislizenii (short-nosed leopard lizard) is one of my favorite flatland desert lizards! 🏜 Beyond their elaborate spotting, this active species is quite carnivorous - frequently munching on other lizards and even sometimes rodents! 🐁 Reminds me of a small monitor! At some of our whiptail lizard sites (field work in New Mexico, USA), we regularly trapped leopard lizards... I wonder how many of precious data points (whiptails lizards, Aspidoscelis sp.) were gobbled up by G. wislizenii... 😅 #fieldbiology #fieldwork #carnivore #trophic #lifehistory #naturalhistory #desertbiology #herpetology #lizardlover #crotaphytidae #gambeliawislizenii #gambelia #leopard #leopardlizard #monitor #rodents #cannibal #newmexico #socorrocounty #riograndevalley #desertecology

Baby Blunt-nosed Leopard Lizards (Gambelia sila) feature some gorgeous coloration. The vivid cream yellow bands and red spots were unbelievable in person. Seeing that those impressive endangered lizards that were chomping down on my hands with their powerful jaws all summer start out as these bobble-headed beauties, weighing just a couple grams, was such a cool aspect of this season's work. #herpetology #herping #ecology #biology #conservation #lizard #gambelia #California #wildlife #wildlifephotography #nature #naturephotography #photography #animals

Long-nosed leopard lizard - Gambelia wislizenii (in situ w habitat). This fella was spotted basking on a walk out of some slot canyons in Grand Escalante National Monument, southern Utah - just a few minutes after this pic was taken (and I had finished picking cactus spines out of my foot) an F22 jet came screaming up out of the desert no more than 10ft above our heads. God bless America. Anyways, probably one of my favourite lizard species I’ve seen so far, super pretty with fantastic patterning and colours. Really good lizard. And the jet was cool too. Hangin' out with my leopard lizzoes. I'm curious how late in the season they stay surface active. Lizard numbers in general plummeting, but there are lots of baby lizards out this time of year. It is reported that adult L-N Leopard Lizards hibernate when juvies appear, as a mechanism to avoid cannibalism, but this one is still out and eating young lizards aplenty. Another was seen cannibalizing a juvie LNLL a couple weeks ago. This one has eaten at least three lizards last coupla weeks. You can't appreciate how obese she is hanging out on this Ironwood branch. #gambelia #gambeliawislizenii #longnosedleopardlizard #arizonalizards #arizona #saguaronationalpark

The blunt-nosed leopard lizard ( #Gambelia sila) is a relatively large lizard the #Iguanidae family. It has a long, regenerative tail, long, powerful hind limbs, and a short, blunt snout. Adult males are slightly larger than females, ranging in size from 3.4 to 4.7 inches in length, excluding tail. Females are 3.4 to 4.4 inches long. Males weigh 1.3 to 1.5 ounces, females 0.8 to 1.2. Although blunt-nosed leopard lizards are darker than other leopard lizards, they exhibit tremendous variation in color and pattern on their backs. Their background color ranges from yellowish or light gray-brown to dark brown, depending on the surrounding soil color and vegetation. Their undersides are uniformly white. They have rows of dark spots across their backs, alternating with white, cream-colored or yellow bands. Photos by @lordorman — Pixley NWR

Come, get close, and take a blunt-row seat… We’re going to be blunt. The blunt-nosed leopard lizard is in trouble. It’s listed as an Endangered species federally and by the state of California. Unfortunately, it now only inhabits a small fraction of its former range in Southern and Central California. Its decline is the result of habitat destruction and habitat fragmentation. The situation may warrant being blunt, but some sharp people and agencies are giving us hope. We commend federal and state biologists, who have been working with a California zoo to breed blunt-nosed leopard lizards in captivity and release them into suitable habitat. Ten captive-bred individuals were released onto the landscape in Central California just last month. And blunt-nosed leopard lizards are too fascinating to lose. Blunt doesn’t just describe their noses; their behavior is pretty blunt as well. In the presence of another male, territorial males will straighten their back legs, puff up their bodies, extend their neck flaps (dewlaps), and arch their backs while doing pushups. A female that wishes to reject a male’s advances will open her mouth and face the male with her body puffed up, back arched, and legs extended. Do blunt-nosed leopard lizards have the star power of Emily Blunt? We think so. Whether or not you agree, blunt’s not to like? When you’re trying to play it off like you’re cool, but you actually just forgot your sunglasses. Is this a snake or a lizard? How can you tell? While neither actually wears sunglasses, one clue does have to do with this animal’s squinty eyes. Snakes do not have eyelids, but many lizards do. A second clue can also be found on its head. Snakes do not have visible ear openings, but most lizards do. So, if you said this is a lizard - you’re right. From this photo, you can also specifically identify this as a long-nosed leopard lizard. It has the typical markings and a large head with a narrow neck, which is partially visible in this picture. As you might expect, their snouts are longer than the related blunt-nosed leopard lizard, which they can resemble in the places where they’re both found. Plus, herpetologists (scientists who study reptiles and amphibians) can use the little scales above its eye to identify this species. Because of another clue in this photo, you can also determine that she’s a female. During breeding season, orange spots and bars appear along the sides of females’ heads and bodies and underneath their tails. The coloration develops shortly before ovulation and is visible until they lay eggs. The beautiful, picture-perfect long-nosed leopard lizard is found in dry regions. Its range includes all four deserts in the US - the Great Basin, Mojave, Sonoran, and Chihuahuan Deserts. ARC protects long-nosed leopard lizards in PARCAs, or Priority Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Areas, throughout their range. Our office is closed until July 11, but here’s a little ‘Firecracker’ for you as we head into the holiday weekend… …and as America celebrates its “independence,” we acknowledge that the land on which we design and live was nurtured by indigenous Ohlone peoples for generations before “the new world” was a gleam in a colonizer’s eye. Two gravid female long-nosed leopard lizards (Gambelia wislizenii) from opposite edges of their range separated by nearly 500 miles. The first is from Mojave County AZ, and the second is from Harney County OR. These subtle variations are one of the things that continue my fascination with reptiles even after catching almost everything on the west coast. The Long-nosed Leopard Lizard is one of the most bad ass lizard predators in the US. They are well camouflaged hunters that will eat a lot of things but are specialized for attacking and killing other lizards. Like snakes they can eat prey nearly their own size as shown in the third photo of an adult Leopard Lizard killing (and eventually swallowing) an adult desert Iguana. A Long-Nosed Leopard lizard(Gambelia wislizenii), amongst the sandy flats of Southwestern Arizona. - - Its amazing the photos I overlooked this past season! I initially over looked this photo because my flash didn't fire, followed by the lizard quickly bolting and evading me seconds after, before grabbing another shot. I thought the photo was too underexposed without the flash so I scrapped it. Now with some gained editing knowledge this past year, I was able to resurrect it for y'all and fairly happy with the result. Those that photograph them know the struggles of quick and evasive lizards, and that you may only get one shot before they go to light speed. - - #gambeliawislizenii #gambelia #longnosedleopardlizard #desertmuseum #capturearizona #igers_tucson #ilovearizona #azfamily #beon12 #southwest #herping #herpphotography #fieldherping #nature #naturelovers #wildlife_perfection #wildlifephotography #canonusa #sigmaphoto #zoology #herpetology #azherps #zoologia #herpingtheglobe #herpsofig #lizard #desertdweller #desertliving #hikingtrails #takeahike

Like yesterday, the period of time where my old Coolpix died happened to be prime lizard hunting time in SoCal, forcing an in-hand shot of the last Crotaphytid I have to share, a Long-nosed Leopard Lizard, Gambelia wislizenii. Our crew this day consisted of @cwithofur @danenjoysnature Nick and Scott and boy did we find a lot of lizards. Seeing everything from Long-tailed Brush Lizards to Desert Horned Lizards to Desert Iguanas, the only thing we were missing that I thought we should have seen was some manner of Crotaphytidae, and based on the habitat we were messing around, the Leopard would be the most readily observed. It was during a reasonably delicious lunch that Scott remarked about a place he called the Chuckwalla colony that he thought might be a good place for us to spend the latter part of the day, so off we went, Scott jovially teasing us Californians for having french fries with our Mexican food. Unfortunately, the area was like the rest of the Mojave this year--dry, dry dry. The few Chuckwallas we did observe were in rough shape. Since we had 5 sets of eyes scrambling over one rock pile, I got it into my head to cross the desert to another Rock pile, and along the way I managed to spook what was either a VERY large lizard, or a medium rodent into a nearby Mesquite patch. I patiently scanned where I saw the blur move, and among the dried grasses and fallen leaves my eyes finally made out the shape and pattern of a beast of a female Leopard Lizard. She was employing a time-honored trick of crypsis, the 'ol dash and blend. Having observed a few in my day, I have had the fortune to learn how to locate them once they do this, and after Chris arrived on the scene, we were able to catch her to grab some photos She certainly ranks among the largest I've seen, but being very honest, I've seen a lot of lizards and remembering each and every one is difficult. This is part of why I write what I do in this photojournal-- to be able to assist in remembering the animals I've had the great fortune to see. And I hope, after a nice rainy winter, we'll see more in 2022. . . . . . #zillionsoftilians #fieldherping #lizards #leopardlizard

Cool predation event with a Long-Nosed Leopard Lizard and Tiger Whiptail that we got to see this spring in Northern Arizona. We very much thought that the Lep had taken on more than it could handle, but when we returned to where it was about an hour later it had completely consumed the whiptail (last photo). It reminded me of that creepy bug dude on Men in Black.

Aposematic imposter. Female leopard lizards and collard lizards (Crotaphytidae) abandon their cryptic ambush nature while gravid. At some point, this adaptation has proven successful. Pretend to be unpalatable or poisonous during the time you’re most vulnerable and nutritious to would be predators. This is most excellent! #gambelia #gambeliawislizenii #lizards #lizardsofinstagram #zen_saurology #evolution #reptiles #reptileshow

The Gambelia are red-y! Gambelia speciosa (Island Snapdragon) is one of those "can't believe it's native" natives. With glossy evergreen foliage and nearly constant red blooms, this Channel Island native only asks for a coastal home to thrive. The more compact "Firecracker" selection and the narrower leafed Gambelia juncea are additional options to consider....but it's tough to beat the OG! #nativewest #nativewestnursery #nativeplants #gambelia #galvezianowgambelia #snapdragon #ohsnapdragon

Blunt-nosed leopard lizard (Gambelia sila) For those who don’t know, I’m currently living in Bakersfield working at @mccormickbiological doing biological surveys. One of the main species we’re looking for the endangered blunt-nosed leopard leopard, which only lives in the San Joaquin valley. This is the first one I saw. 4/2021 . . #naturephotography #lizardsofinstagram #nikonphotography #naturemacro #gambelia #leopardlizard
