I knew today was going to be tough, The forecast was horrendous but I had confidence I could get the job done. 50-60mph gusting wind, people turning back from Skiddaw due to the wind and no real summit photos as the visibility was shocking. That’s the negatives out the way. Positives. . 1. I showed up! The easiest thing is to make an excuse and give up before you start. 2. I dug deep. God I needed to, that was the toughest conditions I’ve been in. 3. I tested myself. When people were turning back I had a little bit of self doubt. I had a word with myself and had one of those ‘Fuck it’ moments and got it done with some shouting and cheering when I was out of harms way. 4. 7 more off the list. ✅✅✅✅✅✅✅. . . . . What a day!! Wishing James Taylor, the outstanding singer-songwriter and guitarist, a happy birthday today - born 75 years ago in Boston, Massachusetts on 12 March 1948. Taylor is a six-time Grammy Award winner, and in 2000 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, plus the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Taylor’s second album titled Sweet Baby James, released in 1970, featured the participation of Carole King (who wrote You've Got a Friend). Taylor married singer Carly Simon in November 1972, in a small ceremony in New York. He was aged 24 and Simon was 27. They divorced in 1983. In 2001 Taylor married Caroline "Kim" Smedvig, the director of public relations and marketing for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 2007 Taylor released his album One Man Band in which where he joined with Paul McCartney and Joni Mitchell. On November of that year Taylor headlined six shows at the Troubadour, where he was joined with Carole King and others including Tom Waits, Neil Diamond, and Elton John. When this mint factory sample passed by, I snatched it. This one has the MG-N 1029 matrix number in the dead wax. So the English just pressed the record using the existing metal work. Sound quality as good as the American original. No alternative cover art. Why then buy this one? Just for fun, and as an insurance, if ever I would drop or scratch one, I would have a back up copy. Too far fetched? Maybe. EMI had the rights to the UK Columbia brand. This Norgran recording came in their Clef series, with Granz' trumpeter logo on the label. This is volume 3 out of three in the US, but the English issued only two Interpretations albums. Someone once bought a US pressing of David Oistrakh's Encores from me for around twenty dollars. After they'd paid for it, they asked if it was in fact the UK pressing, after all it said "made in England" on it. I explained that it was made in England for the US market. He was confused. He thought he was buying the UK Columbia pressing that sells for hundreds of dollars. He couldn't understand. The cover was the same. It was the same album! How could one press be worth hundreds and another twenty bucks? The reason for that is the legendary reputation of Columbia's UK classical pressings. A neighbour gave me this one from 1959 and it is indeed a thing of beauty, to look at and hear. The grooves on the record seem permanently raised and the sound is incredibly clear and bright. If you'd like to own a UK Columbia pressing to hear for yourself, I have this one listed in my #etsyshop for 30 dollars Canadian. Because it's not Oistrakh or one of those other holy grails I'm not charging Sotheby's prices for this one! 45rpm spotlight: Dave Clark and Friends "Draggin' the Line" (Columbia UK 1971) Imagine my surprise finding this rare UK 45 recently. Not only was this not released in the US, it's actually a really good cover of the classic Tommy James hit. Dave Clark had disbanded the Five in 1970, but still had three years left on his recording contract. So Dave, Mike Smith and session pros tossed off several singles in the UK without much success. To make matters more confusing a few of these were released in 70-71 as The Dave Clark Five. Anyways this cover is quite groovy and will make its Wax Museum debut this Sunday!
