Thingvellir National Park (The Heart of Iceland) is where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet. It genuinely feels like you’re walking on another planet and was such an insane experience. We also were able to climb up and through a lot of the rocks, and spent a good chunk of our day there. Brúarfoss, Iceland 🇮🇸📍 Brúarfoss (‘Bridge Falls’) is a relatively small waterfall compared to many of its Icelandic counterparts, but its diminutive size does nothing to take away from its staggering beauty. Both locals and seasoned travellers regard Brúarfoss as one of the country’s hidden gems, often labelling it ‘Iceland’s Bluest Waterfall.’ The glacial river Brúará falls 2-3m, ending in a U-turn at the base of the waterfall, where the river is concentrated into a deep crevice that runs through the centre of dark volcanic rock formations. This creates sky-blue rapids that almost defy the imagination—and the vistas are made all the more beautiful by the surrounding, lush green flora, which provides a stark contrast to the flowing water. Púfa, Iceland 🇮🇸📍 Þúfa was designed by the Icelandic artist Ólöf Nordal, who sought to create a place of serenity and meditation in the bustling capital city. It is located by Reykjavík harbour in the Grandi area. The word “þúfa” in Icelandic means a tussock, but it can also mean a small mountain or a hummock. On the top of the hill is a shed for drying fish. The work was commissioned by the fish factory HB Grandi in 2013. Þúfa is a man-made, 8-meter, grass-grown mound, which can be walked up along the specially made steps. On top stands a wooden frame where fish is dried. Þúfa is a bridge between nature and the city. The piece is designed to work both close-up and at a distance, and it can be seen from around the city. Those who walk up to the top are able to enjoy one of the most impressive views of Reykjavik available. The structure of Þúfa is unnatural, as it is a man-made mound on artificial land. Skógafoss, Iceland 🇮🇸📍 Skógafoss is one of Iceland’s biggest and most beautiful waterfalls with an astounding width of 25 meters (82 feet) and a drop of 60 meters (197 feet). The river below Skógafoss holds a large char and salmon population and is thus a favorite spot for fishermen in the summer. Due to the amount of spray the cascade produces, at least one rainbow is present any time the sun emerges from behind the clouds. The land underneath the waterfall is very flat, allowing visitors to walk right up to the wall of water. This will get you drenched, although, on a warm summer day, it can be quite tempting. Skógafoss can also be viewed from the top as a steep staircase leads to an observational platform above the cascade. Many nesting seabirds can be found on the route up. Skógafoss is located near the small village of Skógar, south of the Eyjafjallajökull glacier volcano. There you’ll find the Skógasafn folk museum, an open-air museum with both old wooden houses and turf houses, as well as a regional museum with various artifacts from this area. According to folklore, A gold ring is on display at the Skógasafn museum. The ring is from a chest that was owned by Þrasi Þórólfsson, one of the first Viking settlers in the area, who by some accounts was a giant. Folklore states that before his death in 900 AD, Þrasi buried a chest filled with gold in a cave behind Skógafoss waterfall. Many attempts were made to retrieve the chest after Þrasi’s death, and years later, locals managed to grasp a ring on the side of the chest. As they pulled, the ring broke off, and the treasure was lost forever. Fjadrárgljúfur, Iceland 🇮🇸📍 Fjaðrárgljúfur is one of Iceland’s most spectacular natural gems. It is also one of the places that you will probably never be able to pronounce correctly - or at all. The canyon is located in South Iceland, near the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, 248 kilometers (154.1 miles) from Reykjavík. The magnificent canyon is 100 meters (328 feet) deep and two kilometers (1.24 miles) long. What makes it so special are its sheer, turning, and twisting walls, full of oddly-shaped salients and bumps dotted with soft grass and patches of moss. Deep in the canyon, a lazy river serpentines towards the sea. These formations create a dreamlike sight that is truly difficult to describe with words. Standing above this distinctive canyon and admiring the unusual sight is an unparalleled experience, for sure! The canyon was formed by progressive erosion approximately nine thousand years ago. The bedrock itself is thought to be about two million years old. When the glacier retreated at the end of the last Ice Age, the melting water accumulated and a lake was believed to have formed in the valley behind the canyon. The sediment-rich runoff water from the lake flowed towards the ocean through the area where the canyon is located today. The glacial river carved and dug itself into the bedrock, forming several cascades which carved the bedrock even more powerfully. When the lake finally slowly filled with sediment, the runoff river started to carve itself into the freshly formed sediment layers. Iceland’s Haukadular Valley is home to several notable geysers – or, geysirs, in Icelandic – including the Great Geysir, which is big, but erupts infrequently, and Strokkur, which is much more active and reliable. There are roughly thirty minor geysers in the geothermally active region, but my favorite was the Litli Geysir. You will walk right past it on your way to see Strokkur. Don’t blink, or you will miss it. During its eruptions, the Litli Geysir’s water might reach about four or five inches high. Waarom ik doe wat ik doe 💌 In 2019 transformeerde ik mijn leven door gezonder te leven en te sporten, wat me in 2021 inspireerde om mijn eigen bedrijf als personal trainer te starten. Mijn missie: anderen inspireren en motiveren. Als kind had ik altijd al een luisterend oor, geïnteresseerd in de verhalen en leefwereld van anderen.
