Now playing Proud Words on a Dusty Shelf, Ken Hensley's first solo album (under his own name) from 1973. The album was recorded shortly after Uriah Heep released their album Uriah Heep Live. Hensley himself played guitar, keyboards and sang on the album. Musicians who played on the album included Uriah Heep bassist Gary Thain and drummer Lee Kerslake. Due to the promotion of Uriah Heep's Sweet Freedom, there was no time for Hensley to promote Proud Words on a Dusty Shelf. The resulting album was as good as anything Uriah Heep recorded at their peak and features wonderful material such as Cold Autumn Sunday, Black Hearted Lady and Go Down, along with an alternative version of Rain (also recorded by Uriah Heep). The song "Cold Autumn Sunday" is occasionally played on American radio stations, which Ken Hensley has commented positively on in several interviews. All songs written by Ken Hensley. This is the very first UK pressing with ILPS-9223-A and ILPS-9223-B numbers on labels. Marie Queenie Lyons - Soul Fever Marie “Queenie” Lyons is a mystery girl, a Southern enigma. Like a kind of black Bobbie Gentry, after just one album (“SOUL FEVER”) Queenie vanished. Following its 1970 release, she disappeared off the soul map forever, like a roman candle floating off into the warm Southern night. Because of the prodigious wealth of talent in black America at the time, great albums with miniscule marketing budgets were often overlooked. “SOUL FEVER” was just a drop in an ocean of fabulous, funky R&B recordings released that year. But over the decades, it’s become a CULT CLASSIC and established as one of the rarest and most prized Southern soul albums from that prolific era. Filter- The Very Best Things (1995–2008) released 2009; first time on vinyl, RSD 4/20/2024 After a chance meeting with Trent Reznor in a Cleveland music store, Richard Patrick landed a gig as touring guitarist in Reznor’s live incarnation of Nine Inch Nails from 1989 to 1993. His only recorded contribution can be heard in “Sanctified” on Pretty Hate Machine. Patrick also appeared in the music videos for “Down in It”, “Head Like a Hole” and “Wish”. Trent encouraged Richard to make a record of his own. Shortly after, he formed the band Filter with collaborator Brian Liesegang, and released their debut album Short Bus in 1995. The album would go on to sell a million copies, with the success of the single “Hey Man, Nice Shot” which saw heavy rotation on both rock radio and MTV. Filter would find a whole new level of popularity with their second album, 1999’s Title of Record which would go on to sell over 1.5 million copies. The album spawned three singles- “Take a Picture”, “Welcome to the Fold” and “The Best Things”. TOR is my favorite Filter album and holds deep meaning for me. The Very Best compilation contains songs from the aforementioned albums as we as The Amalgamut, and Anthems for the Damned. Also included are songs from The Crow: City of Angels Soundtrack, Spawn: The Album, The X-Files: The Album, and Songs in the Key of X. In 2013, Filter would release my second favorite album- “The Sun Comes Out Tonight” which I just got on vinyl. Heta Linjen, or Feta heta linjen as they called themselves on their first LP, were a playful and humorous jazz rock group active in the early 1970s. Heta Linjen was originally the unnamed band that accompanied Doris on the album Did You Give the World Some Love Today Baby and can be seen as a supergroup of the time, as the band members included Janne Carlsson from Hansson & Karlsson, Ulf Andersson and Göran Lagerberg from Egba, singer Kisa Magnusson and Berndt Egerbladh. In 1974, parts of the group appeared in Jaques Tati's film Parade, which was filmed at the Cirkus in Stockholm, under the name Janne Carlsson's Pop Group, reinforced by Janne Schaffer and others. For her eighth studio album, Anastacia chose a unique concept of recording English translated versions of German rock/pop hits. While a unique concept, Germany is one of Anastacia’s largest markets. I have always been perplexed as to why she never caught on with a larger American audience despite being a native of Chicago. I think it’s a nice way to recognize the loyalty of her German fanbase without excluding her European/UK fans. While not necessarily toting any major standouts, these covers sound like they could be original to Anastacia to anyone unfamiliar with the original versions and keep with her usual formula.
