Copenhagen’s contemporary #urban and #architectural landscape surpasses many cities I’ve visited, primarily due to its emphasis on ‘social porosity’. Compared to Amsterdam, both cities employ #starchitecture to rejuvenate key areas like the #downtown and #harborfront, prominently feature #sustainability in design, foster coexistence with nature, and integrate new structures into the historic fabric to support growth. However, Amsterdam’s approach often appears more fabricated, manicured, and crafted to captivate #visual media, with certain MVRDV projects serving as prime examples. #Architecture and #urbanism of #Copenhagen adds a new feature to the list above and prioritizes it over all others: design for the collective good. Projects like #Blox by #OMA, #CopenHill and the Harbor Bath by BIG, #Superkilen Park by @Topotek1, @superflexstudio, & #BIG, Park’n’Play by @jaja_architects, and even residential developments like #8House by BIG and Krøyer Square by @vilhelmlauritzenarchitects and @cobearchitects all chant Jan Gehl’s motto of “life first, then #spaces, then #buildings.” These projects create social porosity by actively encouraging, what I’d call, ‘collective peripheral participation’—creating spaces & programs that allow the public to participate in the purpose of a #place without disrupting the primary functions or daily routines of the core users. And in each of the above projects, this form of participation manifests itself in a unique and memorable way—despite, surprisingly, being “free”—catering to diverse ways of being in the social realm; examples of which include recreation (Park’n’Play), restoration (Copenhill), soaking up sun (Krøyer Square), culture and learning (Blox), and community engagement (Superkilen). Free stuff don’t have to be accompanied by mediocre experiences. Differing Heights Is there a so-called ‘architecture rebellion’ where you are? Here, in Northern Europe, it’s a movement criticising modernist and contemporary architecture. A movement consisting of very different people, using lots of very different arguments. A few days ago, I saw this particular building used in one of those anti modern architecture posts and I smiled. You see, it took me quite a while to learn to like this building. In part because I always passed it heading in the same direction. One day, I looked over my shoulder and noticed the way these boxes are stacked and merged. The contrast between green and white. We began our jam packed last day in Copenhagen with a visit to Rosenborg Castle. We arrived in time to see the Queen’s Guard begin their daily parade from Rosenborg Castle to the Royal Palace for the changing of the guard. Next, it was on to a bike tour of Copenhagen.
