There are many benefits to dividing our perennials! Crowded plants compete for nutrients and have restricted airflow, which can lead to diseases. Dividing perennials encourages new growth and can rejuvenate a tired plant. Dividing them can also control the size of the plant, and you can take those extra plants and plant them somewhere else in the garden or share them with a friend. When to divide is an important factor to be aware of. Divide spring blooming perennials in the fall, about 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Then divide fall blooming perennials in the spring. Try to choose a cloudy or overcast day, as the bright, hot sun can dry out the plants too much. Choosing a planting date where rain is forecasted for the days following planting, and watering the area where the plants are going to be planted the day ahead can be helpful. Once you’re ready to divide follow these steps: 1. Dig the plant up with a spade or shovel, remove any loose soil around the roots 2. Gently separate the plants by pulling the roots apart with your hands or cutting them with a sharp knife or spade. Each division should have 3-5 vigorous shoots and a healthy supply of roots 3. Place the divided plants in a moist, shaded area until replanted. After planting, water the plants into the soil thoroughly. Have any questions? Recently, we took on the project of refreshing and enhancing the memorial dedicated to Midlothian High School students who have passed away. Each lost student is honored with a personalized engraved brick, acting as a lasting tribute to their time with us. With an upcoming ceremony to engrave a brick for a recently departed student, we were grateful to have been asked to help by a local carden club. As a company run by and made up of many Trojan alumni, we were proud to donate our labor and a significant portion of materials to this meaningful cause. Together, we're ensuring that the memories of Midlothian's lost students remain cherished and respected within our community for years to come. Ramon Luna's journey with Cross Creek began in 2001, driven by his passion for working outdoors in the fresh air and his desire to learn the landscaping trade. Over the years, he has evolved into a pivotal member of the team, leading a crew of three to bring the visions of landscape designers to life. Specializing in hardscape projects such as patios, walls, fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, and pool surrounds, Luna's responsibilities encompass a wide range of tasks, including installation, coordination, and client interaction. “I love to see a plan come together,” said Luna, “I also enjoy working alongside the homeowners and my team to achieve a happy customer.” Reflecting on his time at Cross Creek, Ramon fondly recalls the early days when the company operated with only a handful of trucks and employees. Moving to the backyard, we created riprap creek banks to prevent water from breaching into their yard, and some decorative stone at back of the driveway to slow down rushing water and prevent erosion. Finishing up, we also added a few simple plantings to give it some more charm. Aside from the landscaping, our teams also cleaned up their yard by removing brush, leaves, and sticks, trimmed down any undergrowth, and applied a pre-emergent to help prevent weed growth. We recently installed a stunning flagstone walkway, cozy circular patio with a fire pit, and dual-cut seat wall in Salisbury in Midlothian, VA. The details of this project are what we love the most! Walking through her clients' office building tending to their plants, there isn't a room that plant maintenance technician, Sylvia Godsey, doesn’t see a friendly face in. If you were to see her interacting with her clients that she has made an effort to know on a personal level, you never would have guessed that when she was hired in 2017, her biggest fear would turn into her greatest strength. Godsey's love for plants and gardening began when she was a young girl, having a soft spot for watching things grow. A loyal employee of the well known Ukrop's supermarket company, she found herself looking for another company to share her talents with upon their closing in 2017. Working for Seniors Helping Seniors for her first few months away from Ukrops, the toll of building relationships that would ultimately lead to an unimaginable end, Godsey knew that this line of work was not for her. Godsey’s sister, Brenda, ultimately encouraged her to apply for her current position. Ironically, Godsey’s love of watching plants grow has nurtured her personal growth, allowing her to gain confidence and flourish in forming relationships. “The relationships I have formed with my clients are based on their trust in me to take the best care of their plants, that they are in the best condition that they could possibly be in,” Godsey said. “All the people I have in my accounts are wonderful, they are kind and welcoming people.” Employees like Sylvia Godsey are proof that when partnering with Cross Creek, you receive more than bare minimum plant maintenance. Trellising can be used all over the garden. They can be free standing next to a raised garden bed, on the sides and above an arbor, or attached to the side of your house. When setting up a trellis, each will be slightly different. Free standing will require post holes to be dug and set with concrete, while trellising against a house will need to be anchored to the wall, as some vines can get heavy. Remember to leave a gap a few inches between the trellis and the house or wall for air flow. This gap will decrease the likelihood of powdery mildew or other fungi developing on your plants. Trellises create stunning visual interest in the garden or landscape, and add more height and dimension to any space. Consider using climbing roses, clematis, jasmine, or even cucumbers to add a lush, green wall around your garden & home. Have any questions about trellising? There’s nothing more frustrating than wanting to host your family and friends and not having adequate space for everyone. So when a family from Ashland, Virginia reached out looking to renovate their backyard for just this, we knew it was going to turn out great! Along with extending their living area off their pool deck with a patio and seat wall, we also added drainage solutions, and fresh plants to liven up the space. Using Belgard Weston wall blocks, and Origins 12 pavers, we were able to extend their available area to host by 1,000 square feet! Taking care of their troublesome drainage issues, we added a sump pump to aid in the movement of water. Lastly, we added Boxwood, Osmanthus, Abelia, Cassian Grasses, Ruby Falls Redbud and an assortment of perennials into their landscape, with rock instead of mulch to further assist with drainage. After a year of rain, wind, foot traffic, and maintenance, it's important to apply fresh mulch to your lawn not only to give a clean and finished look, but also to prevent new weed growth. Our mulching crews are currently working through each property to perfect the beds, starting back in January, and finishing in March. Each mulch crew starts by digging a deep shovel edge to ensure that all beds are defined and shaped nicely. It is good practice to dig a new edge each year to hold the mulch in place and keep your beds looking nice.
