In the Mayors Inaugural Address she stated: “I want to acknowledge that we are standing on the lands that have been stewarded by the Tohono O'odham since time immemorial … and the Pascua Yaqui people who have lived in the Sonoran Desert for thousands of years. And, we are standing on the grounds of a barrio that was a center of commerce and community. During urban renewal in the 1960s, the barrio was destroyed to create the Tucson Convention Center campus. It is important to me that we ground ourselves by naming and acknowledging the histories of these lands.” *** “I am grateful to Chairman Jose of the Tohono O’odham Nation and Chairman Yucupicio of the Pascua Yaqui tribe for posting their flags here today. As someone who has spent significant amounts of time in the classroom (standing in the front, ever so slightly pontificating), it is easy to see when eyes are glazing over. One of my favorite ways to disrupt the catatonic numbing of a lecture on portraits is to add some images of work by El Mac. Enormous visages stretched across entire buildings are always impressive, yet these pieces are rendered with the finesse of an Old Master with emphasis on the flares, flourishes and effects that only spray paint can deliver. All of this skill is built upon years of experimentation and execution in a variety of environments. Fyce/Fyse pieces are immediately recognizable to my eye. The NG crew has had an active presence in the Southwest for decades. During the aughts in Albuquerque there were many productions painted, specifically in conjunction with the Floor Projection Jam(s). Kaper (RIP) & Fyce were usually in the mix on these walls. I can't pinpoint any specific influence from that crew on New Mexico style writing beyond my own previous work, nevertheless, seeing those different styles inspired my circle of jerks. Cruising by this landlocked freight had me as excited as a kid in a candy store with a one hundred dollar bill. The desert holds hidden beauty, which is a ridiculous understatement, to the point of being worthless as such a simplistic observation. The important part, or perhaps the art, is in being willing to see or take those steps toward things we are only vaguely aware of. As a rabid Star Wars fan I also think of Joseph Campbell and his illustration (illumination?)of The Heroes Journey, not as the epic quest that propels one into a glorious mythological metamorphosis, but the subtle and simultaneously profound shift in the mind and heart. Beautiful day on Babad Doag with Montessori Middle School. Surrounded by the Arizona Pines of Marshall Gulch, students practiced sensory awareness and built immense resiliency. Some walked barefoot the whole trip, some tumbled and fell, and they never gave up. These students ate lunch by a beautiful creek, had exciting conversations about the mammals found on the top of this Sky island, and spent time observing different individuals in the area. An unreal day on Ce:wi Do'ag. Under blue skies and sycamore leaves, we discussed the medicine of nature and of this mountain, then experienced it's medicinal effects first hand. These students from Change Maker High School swam in freezing snow melt water, walked barefoot over oak leaves for many miles, and basked in the rays of a gracious sun. Together we talked about our ancestral connections nature and it's blissful uncomforts. Many students spoke about the strength of their ancestors and pushed the limits of their resiliency to honor their strength. It was a day no one will forget. My first mural in 2020. This was actually the first painting I ever did since bombing and tagging my name in High School. It took me a few months cause I was so nervous to paint I always had an excuse and I especially was a nervous wreck when people would stop by and watch me. I would get asked don't you put your brushes in water? Don't you cover your paint? Don't you wash your stuff off after you use it? I didn't know shit! But I figured it all out by people telling me helpful things like that and this was the result. From@lucksalway: Wanna thank everybody who came out to Sal "Wagonburner" Sawaki and my event last night at Splinter Collective. Was a lot of fun and a big success! Big shout out to my brother Chucho Vai Savoy for doing an amazing opening prayer as he always does. Chucho gifted wagon burner and I with a really beautiful Eaglefeather for each of us that I'm very grateful for and I know Sal feels the same. He also gifted everybody there with a song so beautiful and powerful I think everybody there had a tear. Also a big huge shout out to the girls from Pues Cafe/magazine for gifting us with our tribal flags. They were beautifully handmade and sewn together with real feathers on them! I love this gift too and man I am feeling very blessed and inspired by everybody's energy last night. Also shout out to Alaina Pierce for the dope donation for our raffle. Big thanks to our brother Elijah Garcia who is coming along with us on our trip and took video and pics for upcoming mini doc coming later. Big thank you to all it was a really fun night and we took many pictures last night I'll try to add more to post as I get them later on this evening and also big shout out to my O'odham brothers and sisters that came and provided the food and music! T.O. Mumsigo & Reservation Sensation Fry bread made the vibe very nice they brought the Rez vibes to the city. Was a windy night and we all thought it was going to start raining but it never did just a few sprinkles and it got a little crazy especially when my brother's and family showed up LOL. Western anthropology and archaeology believe the first people in this part of the Sonoran Desert were likely here even before the iconic saguaro entered the scene. Today, the Tohono O’otham - Desert people - are one example of how ancient their roots are with those of these tall cacti. . “The significance of the saguaro is that, in our songs, our ceremonies and our stories, the saguaros, we consider them people. We believe that they are our ancestors, so they are pretty much like our brothers and sisters.” - Tanisha Tucker of the TO Nation recounts traditional connection as she harvests and processes the fruit before monsoons hit - a tradition of such longevity it makes the length of Arizona statehood a joke. And although scientists might scoff at the cultural worldview she presents, arguing with their carbon dating and theories instead, all that really matters is the O’odham have always taken care of the Jewed in these parts. They know the Desert does not equate Emptiness or Starvation, at least not before colonial interests cut off the water and changed their lives drastically, if not taking them altogether. . As we ran some trails in Cuk ṣon (anglicized to Tucson, or At the base of the black hill - Sentinel Peak), we learned the names of plants that are invading and destroying Indigenous ones, not unlike human interaction, coming with human interaction; but we also learned of the many ancient plants that evolved and became what they are here - just as cultures thrive and become what they are. And this in particular is possibly the tallest relative we have met so far.
