I truly take each of your messages & poll answers to heart, and I found that almost half wanted a weekday sale & a little more than half wanted a weekend sale. So I thought the best way to give the best of both is to have it on a Friday, BUT here is where I need your opinion... How do you pace yourself as a flower farmer?... For me as a mom of 4 and another sweet little one on the way, I look at all of the projects that need to be finished about a month in advance and then decide how much of that project do I need to do each day to have it finished on time and still keep up my responsibilities in homeschooling, house cleaning & meals. For instance I tell myself to try to get at least 1 1/2 to 2 crates of dahlias divided and about 4 product listings completed for our website each day (which are currently hidden on our website but I am readying for a preview before our sale). I get up around 6:30am, get ready & have my quiet time in the Bible, go divide dahlias for about 1 1/2 hours, 9am get girls ready and eat breakfast, then start school by 10am, lunch at 1pm, finish school by 3pm, divide dahlias for another 2 hours & then get supper on. I wish I could say that I stay on track with this schedule to a T but it is pretty much a general approximate for what all gets done each day. I'd love to hear what helps you stay on track! I can not tell you how much I LOVE this amazing, huge, ultra petaled dahlia bloom!... The one and only thing I wish was that she made more tubers, but all in all, she still produced about 4-6 good tubers per plant. This one is called Westerton Lilian 😍! Do you grow her? I am finally busy dividing dahlias, and I am hoping to get at least one crate done a day, preferably two. I give myself grace and just keep on plugging away at eating one bite at a time from this elephant! I was thrilled at how easy it was to divide this variety called Burlesca! Something new I am doing to help keep our tubers from shriveling during storage while they are still in clumps in our bulb crates in our controlled climate room, is to cover them with wood shavings. I found last year that even though I stored our crates of clumps in a room that was kept at about 90% humidity and 40 degrees, the fans that were constantly moving air to help keep any mold from growing was also slowly drying out the clumps as well before I could get to dividing them and then storing them in vermeculite (this year we are changing to peat moss due to it helping hold the moister better because our climate is so dry). I found the faster I could divide and pack away the tubers in either vermiculite or peat moss, the better they stored as long as the skin & cut marks were dry (I also use cinnamon on the tubers to help deter mold growth especiallyon the cut marks). I am beyond relieved that all of our dahlias are dug and washed but the last bunch had to get stored away into the cooler room before they were completely dried so I did not pack any sawdust around them. They've now had about two weeks' worth of drying time in our cooler room, so now I am going to be heading there shortly to start covering them in sawdust. Well, a slight frost damaged about 30% of the dahlias, and we have started the process of chopping down the field dahlias to start digging up hopefully today and the rest of this week. I am super grateful for the phenomenal weather we are having so that we can do this process spread over the next two weeks instead of having to cram in so much work in just a few days. I am so grateful that the frost is holding back because the list of things to do before it comes is as follows: 1. Finish tagging all the miss-labeled dahlias. 2. Take viral tests on as many dahlias as I can. 3. Finish harvesting all the zinnias for seed. 4. Take all of the zinnia varieties pictures. 5. Harvest dahlia seed heads. 6. Gather lots of flowers for dried bouquets to sell this fall. And these are just the things that need to happen BEFORE the frost! AFTER the frost... boy, I don't think I am going to go there yet, thankfully. We are going to be doing an end of season Dahlia cutting sale sometime in October. End of seasonal cuttings are overwintered under grow lights and then spritzed with Fish And kelp Emulsion for fertilizer throughout the winter and you can also take cuttings from that cutting as it grows as well. You would then plant them all out next spring and would have multiplied some stock of some very rare varieties. The sale that will be slightly different in the fact that I do not have much time to edit, upload and do a detailed description for each listing so they will basically just have a photo that says "photo not available", the name and price. Last year this was one of the my most favorite dahlias for its form, color, long straight stems and for them being so strong and a very productive plant! It's name is Zebrano and I was able to hold on to it by a thin thread through storage and still have one plant from last year but I am hoping that this guy will produce very well again and hopefully I'll do better at storage for this one this coming winter!
