I’m starting to slowly replace the pots that housed my tulips, these normally are planted up with annuals but have decided to experiment with long lasting perennials and evergreens. This little pot is planted up with French lavender, violas and swathes of ivy. Technically this should, with a little care last me for a year or longer depending on the harshness of our winter. I love French lavender and just adore the fluffy flower heads (bracts) , but it will not grow in my heavy clay soil, hence the pot. (the hidcot fares a little better so long as I prepare the soil). And just in case you’re wondering ……..English lavender is much lighter and sweeter than French lavender because it has less camphor, a chemical with a piney. English Lavender Narrow leaves, compact growth. Small, fragrant flowers in purple hues. Sweet, floral fragrance. More cold-hardy, prefers well-drained soil and full sun. French Lavender Broader leaves, showy bracts on flower spikes. Brighter purple flowers. Slightly medicinal scent. The first garden job I wanted to do past visitor season was a harvest! What a beautiful day. Hot morning and then a divine 3 hour thunder storm with a little rain and then back to sunshine. The most perfect day. This is why I love autumn so much! The visitors seeing this asked where this all was in the garden. At a glance no one would realise this is all between shrubs and flowers and that’s the joy of a permaculture garden. Harvests feel like foraging I must admit there’s often burnt food when I run out to go get herbs whilst cooking. Sometimes I get lost and an hour disappears with distraction 😂 a bit of gardening, watching birds and hand picking bugs. But most of all the peace felt in the space which always charges my energy levels. I’m like the energiser bunny when I get back inside! I’ll post these baskets separately this week to explain what’s been harvested. Next to my pool; however, I love to use more tropical looking flowers like hibiscus, canna, and lantana. Raised bed trellis 2.0 is almost ready for the tomatoes, thanks to the handy husband. We used connectors from Maker Pipe, 3/4” metal conduit, one-hole straps secured to the bolts in the Vego 10-in-1 17” tall bed and the corners are secured with 1/2” rebar into the ground. The bed’s rounded corners are a bit of a challenge to configure a trellis behind it. I am planning to have cherry type tomatoes in the back row and will try to use 1/16 stainless steel wires across the back to support the stems.
