In order to give a break to Daniel Guerin's "Fascisme et Grand Capital" and the Penguin's "Dictionnary of Symbols" as amp chassis props, I decided to finally build an amp chassis cradle. Considering the quality of the wood I recycled for this project, the woodworking tools (and skills) I have at my disposal, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. It can hold 37cm to 72cm long amp chassis, basically from Fender 5E3 and the likes, up to this Ampeg monster. There is a bunch of blueprints for those cradles lying around online but I was not satisfied with the chassis sizes they could accomodate so I had to tweak them for the smallest form factor while accomodating all kind of amp chassis. Woodcock, George. 'Anarchism and Anarchists: Essays by George Woodcock'. Quarry Press, 1992. - Woodcock's collection is actually really dope. It's cool to look at what a British anarchist, who spent his remaining decades in Canada, who'd cut his teeth doing syndicalist organising in what I assume was the 1930s, thought of where anarchism was headed. He'd watched its resurgence in the 1960s and had a lot of hope when he wrote about it in 1990. Most of the essays are from the 1940s to 70s. - I think the standout essays are the last three in the section on anarchism: 'Anarchist Living and the Practice of Art' (1976), which makes me want to read Herbert Read's work, 'Anarchism and Ecology' (1974), and 'The Prospects for Anarchism' (1990), because they're expansive, make solid points, and have led me to want to read more. For example, in 'Anarchism and Ecology', he says, "Anarchists such as these were therefore the forerunners of contemporary environmentalists who today appreciate that destruction and despoliation of the environment has more to do with a social system that has gone pathologically wrong than with inadequate measures of conservation or pollution control... With some justification it can be said that anarchists were the first true ecologists." (p.117) - Woodcock talks a lot about Kropotkin in these last three essays but devotes a relatively small essay to him in the section of essays about anarchists. One essay in this section that has piqued my interest is 'Noam Chomsky's Anarchism' (1974) in which he critiques Chomsky's introduction to Daniel Guerin's 'Anarchism: From Theory to Practice'. Because I also have that book (the 1970 US edition), I've taken an interest in whether Woodcock is justified in his critique that Chomsky is a Marxist who gives too much emphasis to industrial workers at the expense of other social and cultural currents in anarchism's history (e.g. Chomsky concentrates on industrial Barcelona when he mentions Civil War Spain at the expense of the masses of agrarian communities who made up the bulk of anarchist Spain at the time), at least in his intro to Guerin's book. - (continued in comments)
