Un punto vital y necesario en torno al cual se ha librado la lucha de clases a lo largo de la historia del capitalismo es la reducción de la jornada laboral. El propio Primero de Mayo se estableció como parte de la lucha del movimiento obrero por una jornada laboral de 8 horas. Esta reivindicación no ha disminuido en absoluto con el paso del tiempo. En 2022, los trabajadores ferroviarios en EEUU estuvieron a punto de declararse en huelga por el estado de guardia de 24 horas al día, 7 días a la semana. Este año, los trabajadores de atención domiciliaria en Nueva York iniciaron una huelga de hambre para protestar contra las jornadas laborales de 24 horas, a menudo turnos consecutivos en una misma semana. Alrededor del 40% de los trabajadores del sector están afiliados al sindicato 1199 SEIU, rama del segundo mayor sindicato en EEUU. ¿La respuesta del sindicato al turno de 24 horas? ¡Todo funciona según lo previsto! Tanto sus jefes como su sindicato dicen a los trabajadores de asistencia domiciliaria, sobrecargados de trabajo y mal pagados, que el turno de 24 horas debe continuar. El sindicato, SEIU, ha testificado en contra de las trabajadoras en una audiencia oficial, alegando que todo el sector se vendría abajo si no se les hiciera trabajar hasta la extenuación. ¡En lugar de ello, el sindicato ha reclamado una gran victoria al ganar unos minutos de paga de las 11 horas no pagadas del turno! Esta postura no es más que otro ejemplo de cómo los sindicatos se han convertido en herramientas del Estado, ligados legal e institucionalmente a la opresión de la clase trabajadora. La clase obrera no puede confiar ni en los reformistas populares de la política electoral ni en los negociadores pragmáticos de la esfera sindical para alcanzar sus objetivos. La lucha debe tomarse en manos de los propios trabajadores a través de su autoorganización real por fuera del sindicato. Ya sea en forma de comités de huelga independientes o de asambleas de masas, una lucha autoorganizada nos permitiría luchar como una sola clase, sin ataduras legales ni industriales. A vital and necessary point around which the class struggle has been fought throughout the history of capitalism is the reduction of the working day. May 1st, International Workers’ Day itself was established as part of the workers’ movement’s push for an 8 hour working day. This demand has by no means diminished over time. In 2022, rail workers in the US nearly went on strike over 24/7 on-call status. This year, home care workers in New York went on hunger strike to protest 24-hour working days, often back-to-back shifts in a single week. Around 40% of the workers in the industry are unionized under 1199 SEIU, a branch of the US’s second-largest union. The union’s response to the 24-hour shift? All is working as intended! The overworked, underpaid homecare workers are told by both their bosses and their union that the 24hr shift must continue. The union, SEIU, has testified against the workers in an official hearing, claiming that the entire industry would collapse without them being worked to the bone. Instead, the union has claimed a great victory by winning a few minutes of pay out of the 11 unpaid hours of the shift! This stance is just another example of how unions have become tools of the state, bound legally and institutionally to the oppression of the working class. The working class can rely on neither the popular reformers of electoral politics, nor the pragmatic negotiators of the union sphere, to achieve its goals. The struggle must be taken into the hands of the workers themselves through their real self-organization outside of the union. Whether it takes the form of independent strike committees or mass assemblies, a self-organized struggle would allow for us to struggle as a single class, not bound by legalities or by trade. Li este livro em 2022. Ele foi escrito no ano de 1992, há mais de 30 anos. Porém, se mantém atual referente ao debate sobre o meio-ambiente e sua deterioração. Analisando inúmeras questões sobre o tema como (história, geografia e química) aborda o assunto de forma direta e didática, com dados científicos de trinta anos atrás, mostrando acertadamente o resultado hoje da exploração do planeta pela grande indústria mundial. Os dados já em '92 eram alarmantes. Mas em um mundo regulado pelas potências imperialistas de nações que visam aumentar seus lucros indiscriminadamente, nada foi feito para diminuir a poluição e o desmatamento predatório. Ao contrário, como os professores Francisco Capuano Scarlato e Joel Arnaldo Potin denunciam no livro, o aquecimento global aumentou de '92 até os dias de hoje! Contudo que está acontecendo nos últimos dias no Rio Grande do Sul, com as enchentes e desmoronamento de encostas, morros, com milhares de desabrigados e mortos. Onde sempre quem sofre é o trabalhador palperizado pela exploração da classe dominante a burguesia, não podemos deixar de afirmar que a única maneira de superar essas situações, para que isso não se repita mais, para que o trabalhador não passe mais por desastres ambientais, não seja massacrado com guerras promovidas pela ganância das nações imperialistas que visam unicamente defender o interesse de suas empresas, para que o proletariado possa ter de fato uma vida livre da exploração dos capitalistas visando uma vida melhor para todos no planeta, a saída não é outra se não a revolução feita por aqueles que tudo produzem.
