John Allen Bigelow, a Civil War Vet who lost an arm in the war, organized the "Decoration Day" celebrations - aka Memorial Day - throughout the later 19th century. At the start of the Second World War, Thompson joined the Army Air Corps and earned his wings as a pilot on November 1, 1943. After 37 missions over enemy territory, Lt. Thompson made the ultimate sacrifice on July 23, 1944, when he was shot down over Germany. At first, he was declared missing, but after months of waiting, the family received confirmation of his death from the American Red Cross. The Birmingham Eccentric printed the news, and the letter, on the front page of the October 26th, 1944 edition. 2nd Lt. I had heard them on #wrnr around that time, started streaming them on Pandora, and I became an addict. DBT has been my favorite band for about 20 years now. Often misunderstood and under appreciated, I would argue and I believe this is the most important American rock band in the 21st century thus far. Highly political at times, their story telling is second to none. This album was their first one with Jason in the band, and he ended up with the album title song. This is one of my top 10 LPs ever of all time, and is my #1 or #2 favorite DBT album. Songs about depression era bankers seizing farms, depression and suicide, wayward love, and family feuds. Goodwin was a Boston-based (for most of his life) painter who was influenced by the Ashcan School as well as the French Impressionists. Sadly, he died after a drinking binge, right before heading to Paris to see Impressionist work in person. We love this painting showing some kind of dedication, perhaps of a monument facing the Boston Commons Garden.
