Leone only directed seven films and all of them are fantastic with maybe the exception of The Colossus of Rhodes (1961). You could call three of his films master works and the four others as genre defining. Duck, You Sucker is the latter. Watched #TheMagnificentSeven (1960) : John Surges makes a solid Western remake of Kurosawa's Japanese classic #SevenSamurai Sturges had made several Western flicks before remaking Akira Kurosawa's cult classic, which particularly helped him to get the Western nuances right with this difficult story. Seven Samurai was almost 3 hours long, and Sturges' remake is a little over 2 hours. That was a good trick. He knew that people had already seen the Japanese flick, so let's not make a long film again. People are aware of the story and the climax, so let's give them entertainment without taking much of their time. The Magnificent Seve ln does not have long action sequences like the original Japanese film. It has only 2 or 3 action scenes, exactly the ones that are needed, so somehow it shrinks the impact you have in mind. It does have some classic Western segments, though. Kurosawa's film literally took the entire last hour to define the war scenario between the villagers and samurais, but here, Sturges managed all that within 10 or 15 minutes. The seven cowboys were pretty tough and rough. The narrative didn't give them enough time to form a bond of friendship or brotherhood, and that's why the emotional touch in the ending didn't feel very impactful. Yet, the idea of "victory belonging to someone else" has been captured very well here too. Instead of peasants, the word is farmers. Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Horst Buchholz, James Coburn, and Brad Dexter—what a fantastic selection of cast members! Not to forget Eli Wallach as Calvera, the main antagonist, and Vladimir Sokoloff as the old man in the village. Some of the dialogues give that kick the audience has been expecting, and the cinematography is excellent. This isn't John Sturges' best work, but surely amongst the top 10, or maybe the top 5. The awkward silence and acceptance of the pyrrhic victory are captured beautifully by the remake too. Happy Birthday, Richard Donner! . He was born Richard Donald Schwartzberg in The Bronx in 1930. His grandfather owned a Brooklyn Movie Theatre which you bet was an influence. Young Schwartzberg served in The Navy as an Aerial Photographer, briefly attended NYU, moved to Los Angeles, changed his name to Donner, and dove into his great passion – you guessed it – Acting. . Yep, he initially wanted to be an Actor; even gained a bit part in a TV Episode directed by Martin Ritt (think ‘Hud’) who hired him as his Assistant and encouraged him to become a Director. Donner worked his way to Directing Commercials for Desilu, eventually finding Dramas with ‘Wanted Dead Or Alive’ and ‘The Rifleman.’ There was a LOT of successful TV, perhaps most famously William Shatner’s ‘Twilight Zone,’ “Nightmare At 30,000 Feet.” . Donner’s first Feature was ‘X-15’ with Charles Bronson & Mary Tyler Moore. Then it was seven years til ‘Salt And Pepper’ with Peter Lawford & Sammy Davis Jr. Then eight years before his breakout, ‘The Omen’ with Gregory Peck. And the rest as they say … . Quick Hit List? How about Directing ‘Superman’ (forever THE Comic Book Movie), ‘Ladyhawke,’ ‘The Goonies,’ the ‘Lethal Weapon’ series, and ‘Scrooged.’ He also Produced (often with wife Lauren Schuler Donner) ‘The Lost Boys,’ ‘Free Willy,’ ‘Tales From The Crypt,’ and ‘X-Men.’ . As he pertains to our Podcast? First, he Directed ‘The Toy’ with Jackie Gleason & Richard Pryor and you may know I’m a BIG Gleason Fan (viz the Podcast’s Theme Song). But the even bigger connection is Donner directed ‘Maverick’ which was written by our own William Goldman. Am 27. Juni veröffentlicht Dolphin Medien den Italowestern „Sie verkaufen den Tod“ erstmals auf Blu-ray. In dem Film aus dem Jahr 1972 spielt Bud Spencer den Dieb Eli Sampson, der in Zeiten des amerikanischen Bürgerkriegs zum Tode verurteilt wird. Er entkommt dem Strick, in dem er sich einem Himmelfahrtskommando unter Leitung von Colonel Pembroke anschließt, der mit einer Handvoll Männern versuchen will, das gut befestigte Fort Holman zurückzuerobern. In weiteren Rollen sind die Hollywoodstars James Coburn und Telly Savalas zu sehen. Auf der Disk werden alle drei Fassungen des Films vorhanden sein. Die deutsche Original-Kinofassung von 1972 wird hier zum erstmal überhaupt regulär veröffentlicht. Sie liegt hier, genauso wie die deutsche WA-Fassung, die 1981 als „Der Dicke und das Warzenschwein“ in den Kinos lief, in HD vor. Retomando los clásicos y que quiero seguir hablando de uno de los actores más geniales que hay, Steve McQueen. Traigo uno de sus mejores trabajos y uno de los westerns americanos por excelencia. The magnificent seven: Un pueblo pacífico de granjeros es aterrorizada constantemente por una pandilla de maleantes liderada por Calvera (Eli Wallach) hasta el punto que están hartos, por ende pedirán la ayuda a unos pistoleros para que los defiendan de semejante amenaza, iniciando así un grupo de forajidos y maleantes que por primera vez el bien. Dirigida por John Sturges, nos trae un remake de la obra maestra del emperador Akira Kurosawa, destacándose como una gran aventura. Si ya vieron la obra de kurosawa, es la misma estructura de la historia original, solo que si cambian ciertas cosas para ser más original y que funcionan muy bien. La narrativa empieza con este pueblito pobre que debe acudir a gente de dudosa moral que servirán como defensores contra un mal mayor. Destacándose los grandes personajes que son el líder Chris (Yul Brynner) y su mano derecha Vin (Steve McQueen) seguidos por el mejor pistolero Britt (James Coburn) el más fuerte O’Reilly (Charles Bronson) y el más joven y entusiasta Chico (Horst Buchholz) cada uno con personalidad bien marcada y que ayuda a plantear bien los temas de la obra. Como son la valentía, el honor, la camarería; como también sobre las verdades de los mitos de la figura del pistolero. Como arriesgan sus vidas por la emoción o solo el dinero sin tener nada fijo. Muy bien contrastado con la figura de Chris y Chico que sirve de mentor para el último. Todo esto mientras vemos como el pueblo se prepara para pelear y aprenden mucho más sobre ellos mismos. Todo esto junto a unas grandes secuencias de acción muy buenas. Que muestran los geniales y certeros que son nuestros vaqueros, mientras no niegan lo sanguinario y devastador que pueden ser estos duelos. (Continua abajo)

A recent viewing stack. Western bank robbery movies with political and social economic commentary. A Fistful of Dynamite or Giù La Testa which best translates to Duck, You Sucker, was the preferred title for Sergio Leone. Another title this 1971 Italian Western received was ‘Once Upon a Revolution’. Which I think would of tucked in nicely between Leone’s ‘Once Upon a Time in the West & America’ films.
