Join The Wetlands Institute for a hands-on opportunity to participate in the Delaware Bay-wide horseshoe crab spawning survey program and learn more about these unique creatures and the spawning phenomenon that takes place here every spring. Surveys are held on Villas Beach, NJ, about 20 minutes from The Wetlands Institute. Each survey covers 1 km of beach (walked in both directions, for 2 km of walking total) and takes approximately 3 hours start to finish. The entire event takes place outdoors. Participants will be walking in sand and water, and should be prepared with weather-appropriate clothing, closed-toe shoes or knee boots that can get wet, and a flashlight or headlamp. Female horseshoe crabs in Delaware Bay will be protected for another year, according to a recent announcement from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. The American Littoral Society would like to thank you for helping us protect the Delaware Bay's horseshoe crab population and the shorebirds which rely on the crab's protein-rich eggs to fuel their migratory journeys, such as the Rufa Red Knot. Red Knot populations collapsed during the 1990s, at the same time horseshoe crab populations plummeted due to unregulated overfishing, and the birds remain on the U.S. threatened species list. In May, the Littoral Society began working with the Cape May Point Science Center and Cellular Tracking Technologies to add cellular tracking devices to our horseshoe crab tagging program. The cellular tags help remotely monitor and track the crabs as they come ashore and provide a better understanding on how often female crabs emerge, general horseshoe crab movement, and what informs their movement decisions. The Bayshore Center at Bivalve provides a glimpse of an often-overlooked part of New Jersey's past from a nearly forgotten place in the state. By the early 1900s, New Jersey was the oyster capital of the world. The wealth derived from harvesting Delaware Bay oysters built entire communities - some with such self-evident names as Shell Pile and Bivalve. However, by the 1950s the oyster industry was essentially gone, wiped out by over-harvesting, pollution, disease and development. The Bayshore Center at Bivalve was founded in 1988 to advance the understanding of the human impact on New Jersey’s aquatic environment through education, advocacy and programming. The first task for the organization was saving and restoring the AJ Meerwald, an oyster schooner built in 1928 and now New Jersey's state ship. In 1991, the Bayshore Center opened the Delaware Bay Museum to document the people and their history that made the growth of the oyster industry possible. The museum is housed in the Oyster Shipping Sheds located along the banks of the Maurice River in Bivalve (Commercial Township) Cumberland County, NJ. On Thursday, July 20 at 6 p.m. the Bayshore Center will host the American Littoral Society's first Sip 'N Shuck in South Jersey. We're getting ready to host our first-ever Sip 'N Shuck in South Jersey! The event will be held Thursday, July 20, in one of the towns that used to be the hub of New Jersey's oyster industry - Bivalve. Only a century ago, Bivalve and neighboring Shellpile were home to more than 30 companies and 500-plus oyster boats, which pulled a thousand bushels a day out of Delaware Bay until over-harvesting, pollution and disease effectively wiped out the shell-fish during the 1920s. Decades later, the Delaware Bay industry began making a comeback with the advent of new aquaculture techniques and oyster farmers focused on managing a sustainable shellfish crop. Cape May Salt Oyster Farms emerged from that new wave, planting its first crop of oysters on Cape May’s rolling tidal flats in 1997. Today, on #InternationalHorseshoeCrabDay, we celebrate the creatures we love so much. The Delaware Bay serves as the home to the largest number of spawning Atlantic horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus) in the world. During May and June, adult horseshoe crabs line the sandy beaches of shallow bays to spawn and lay eggs. Preferred beach nesting sites consist of porous, coarse-grained sand which allows the sand to be drained and the eggs properly oxygenated. Shallow coves and intertidal sand flats provide protection from intense wave energy during spawning events. The American Littoral Society aims to create ecologically healthy and resilient coastal habitats for spawning horseshoe crabs and foraging migratory shorebirds. The peak of horseshoe crab spawning activity occurs on evening high tides during the new and full moons. Each female will resurface about 20 times and lay approximately 80,000 eggs per season in dense clusters that contain about 4,000 eggs at a time. Through a collaborative partnership with the @cmpsciencecenter (CMPSC) and @cellulartrackingtechnologies (CTT), we will be adding cellular tracking devices to our horseshoe crab tagging program. These tags will help us to remotely monitor and track the crabs as they come ashore and provide a better understanding on how often female crabs emerge, general horseshoe crab movement, and what informs their movement decisions. On May 23, staff from CMPSC and CTT, as well as donors Rob and Wendy Wilson, joined us for a special tagging event at Reeds Beach. The tags are adhered to the shell with epoxy and then monitored for an hour as the epoxy cures before being released back into the water. Preliminary data has shown that some of the crabs have resurfaced, and one has even moved 500 meters south to Cooks Beach, one of the beaches we have restored recently! Although horseshoe crabs have existed for 450 million years, there is still a lot to learn about them. The data collected as part of this project will provide valuable information about preferred spawning beaches and horseshoe crab movement throughout the spawning season and between seasons.

The Delaware Bay is home to the largest population of spawning Horseshoe Crabs in the world. Several species of shorebirds depend on these crab eggs to fuel their migration to the Arctic Circle. Mid-May to mid-June is the optimal time to see them at our beach and in the Cape May area, particularly during nighttime high tides around the new and full moons.
