Avant de brûler de Virginie DeChamplain "Farah faisait partie de la catégorie des immobiles, des figées, des endormies. (...) Il aurait fallu se lever de la balançoire il y a longtemps, attraper une torche enflammée au lieu d'écrire des rapports, monter aux barricades, refuser qu'on ne l'écoute pas. Elle aurait pu être la première ligne de défense, mais elle avait échoué." Ah, ce que ne nous ferait pas vivre la fiction. Et vous, "avant de brûler", que vous diriez-vous ? Le récit est clairement celui de fins du monde, et se déroule à une époque où tout a dérapé, où tout a échappé au sacro-saint plein pouvoir des humains, et où perdre ce (celles.eux) qui est cher n'est plus seulement un mauvais cauchemar. Les Déluges ont frappé et la terre est devenue un brasier géant. C'est après une vague de cataclysmes que la narratrice fuit la côte avec Marco qu'elle a rencontré par hasard après que tous deux se soient retrouvés seuls et aient perdu celles qu'ils aimaient. Après avoir investi une maison dans une forêt proche d'un village, ils sont rejoints par Farah, et ses enfants, qui a elle aussi perdu la personne qu'elle aimait, Sam. Tous trois ne savent pas vraiment grand chose les uns des autres, mais ils sentent qu'ils ont en commun ce deuil qui crée en eux un vide abyssal et impossible à combler, impossible à réparer, impossible à effacer. Ce chagrin et cette impression d'avoir été amputé d'une partie de soi sont frappants. Et ces questions obsédantes sont posées : quel niveau d'épreuves, de nostalgies et de regrets est humainement supportable et pour quoi se battre quand on sait avoir, même indirectement, fait partie du gâchis ? Peut-on refaire mieux ? Comment ? En parallèle de l'histoire des humains, il y celle de la "bête", une biche, superbe et majestueuse, qui offre elle aussi son regard sur la Vie, la forêt et ces deux femmes. Les mots de Virginie DeChamplain sont aussi enflammés que l'est son récit, et son roman est une sacrée prophétie, un bel avertissement et un miroir dans lequel observer notre avenir. Jusqu'où accepterons-nous d'aller ? Parce que, nous ne sommes pas sans ignorer que "qui sème le vent récolte la tempête".
Renaissance Tenczyn Castle in Rudno near Kraków ... The medieval castle built in the 14th century on the site of a previous wooden structure was rebuilt "at great expense" around 1570 by Jan Tęczyński (d. 1593), grand chamberlain of the crown, praefectus camerae regiae and advisor to the elected queen Anna Jagiellon (1523-1596). The expansion lasted until the beginning of the 17th century, including the reconstruction of the castle chapel, carried out by Agnieszka Firlejowa née Tęczyńska (1578-1644). During the Deluge (1655-1660), the Grand Marshal of the Crown Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski (1616-1667), wanting to save the Polish crown jewels, hid them in Stara Lubovla in Spiš (Slovakia), spreading the news that they were at Tenczyn Castle. A Swedish unit under the command of Kurt Christoph von Königsmarck (1634-1673) besieged the castle in 1655 and, after the defense of the garrison under the command of infantry captain Jan Dziula, accepted its capitulation. However, the Swedes did not respect the terms of the agreement and murdered the entire crew - 400 people including women. Having failed to find the crown treasure, they burned the castle in July 1656, after having looted everything they could (compare "Szwedzi i siedmiogrodzianie w Krakowie od 1655 do 1657 roku" by Ludwik Sikora, p. 44). Water, water, everywhere, Nor any drop to drink. Paul Sorensen, héros et narrateur de ce roman à la première personne, est né le 20 février 1980. Il a donc 51 ans en mars 2031, lorsque débute le récit. Il a tiré, à la morgue, deux balles dans le crâne de son père, Lanski, mort quinze jours plus tôt à Montréal... Ce qui lui a valu une condamnation d'un an avec sursis. Un sursis assorti d'une obligation de soins psychiatriques. Il suivra donc une séance par mois jusqu'en février 2032. Les entretiens se font avec un certain Guzman (nom qui n'a pas été choisi au hasard). Lequel a la particularité de souffrir de "conjonctivo-chalasis", ce qui provoque chez lui des épanchements incontrôlés de larmes... Les larmes et plus largement l'eau qui sont, comme le suggère d'emblée le titre, au centre de l'œuvre. Nous sommes à Toulouse (la ville de l'auteur...) et, du fait du dérèglement climatique, il ne cesse de pleuvoir. Nous nous intéresserons d'ailleurs au peintre coréen Kim Tschang-Yeul qui a consacré toute sa vie à la représentation des gouttes d'eau... Les entretiens sont l'occasion d'interroger le passé et l'histoire douloureuse de Paul, privé dès la naissance de sa mère et de son frère jumeau et persécuté par un père monstrueux. "Nous en revenons toujours aux mêmes tropismes : l'eau et la mort", note, d'ailleurs, Guzman. Le texte est, bien sûr, très sombre, nous projetant dans un futur proche assez désespérant. Pour autant l'invention narrative est constante et l'écriture, faite de décalages, de recours constants au second degré, assez jubilatoire pour un lecteur qui se prête volontiers au jeu subtil dans lequel il est embarqué. Des parallèles sont, au demeurant ménagés avec "Tout le monde n'habite pas...", ne serait-ce qu'à travers l'identité du héros (les ascendances scadinaves) . Une construction narrative assez éblouissante, donc, qui conduit à traiter sans la moindre lourdeur quelques thèmes essentiels. (Late post) — At the edge of the storm, literally! This was around Coyote, CA (South San Jose) just off the 101 freeway. This severe-warned thunderstorm was dropping copious rainfall and plentiful hail especially in areas between San Jose and Morgan Hill, CA… The National Weather Service forecast for the San Francisco Bay Area for Saturday called for scattered showers and thunderstorms on the tail end of a weather system that had blew thru the region Friday. The center of the weather system (low pressure area) appeared to almost be stationary, off the California coast this day and here in the South Bay, we were on the northern edges of the low where t-storms bubbled up during the afternoon hours. It appeared that this was mainly a South Bay thunderstorm event. Thunder and lightning was particularly noteworthy in the South Bay, where the weather service even issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning near Morgan Hill. Massive amounts of hail and lightning were witnessed around Morgan Hill and south San Jose with the slow-moving storms that did form… I actually had to leave a bit early from my sister’s baby sprinkle event to chase the storms that did form near Morgan Hill. It was worth it. This storm(s) had turned severe-warned. Much of the hail activity was seen along US 101. The hailstorm/graupel halted the SB side to a crawl. A decent amount of lightning was witnessed within this storm. I even got lucky enough to capture a rare occurrence of a plane getting struck by lightning! I later called it a day shortly before 5pm, with occasional downpours continuing all the way home. Talk about a crazy weather day for us on the eve of Easter! (Saturday afternoon, March 30, 2024)
