This has given me a huge insight into safe exploratory play and has equipped me with a ton of knowledge to be able to make suitable substitutions for ingredients which aren’t ideal for small children, despite them still being wisely used. It is impossible to separate birth from the cultural and environmental. Meaning that traditions and beliefs can stem from religion, the environment and region communities grow in, political interventions, medical developments, and wisdoms and feelings whose reasoning is lost to time but still bind a culture together in bringing new life to the world. Researching Afghanistan was fascinating and revealed the complexities of a country that has numerous different tribes and groups. A country that has been subjected to violence and oppression both from other countries like the UK and from within. So what I found is only a tiny representation of the different ways pregnancy, birth and postpartum is honoured within Afghan culture/s.
