Diana Al-Hadid’s stunning exhibition at NGV International. This presentation titled “Mother of Sorrows” is an appropriation, installation, and masterpiece in its own right. Al-Hadid’s glittering exhibit plays on the installation of artworks in the NGV’s collection with a contemporary twist. I’m enjoying playing witness to the thought process of the team at the NGV who insist on deconstructing the white box and engaging the audience with install as art alongside the work itself. The interior design aspect has elevated the space and the engagement levels of audiences across wide demographics. Reducing Christ’s body to a silhouette, Al-Hadid has replaced it here with an aperture, through which can be seen, placed directly on the floor, a lifelike polychrome wood figure of Christ, showing his body tortured from persecution by the Roman soldiers. In this sumptuous semi-decagon grotto, Diana Al-Hadid’s skeins of dripped sculptural threads, created from polymer gypsum, fibreglass, paint and gold leaf,evoke, with floating transparency, the forms of ‘The Garden of Love’, c.1465-70 (displayed in the next room), held by the NGV Collection. This is a rare surviving secular panel painting from fifteenth-century Venice, attributed to The Master of the Stories of Helen a painter working within the studio of Antonio Vivarini. These new walls mask religious sculptures from the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Removed from their usual plinths and placed directly upon the floor, these Christian religious works are disassociated from traditional celestial literature, and literally grounded on the earth. In "Jeita," a variegated mass of paint mixed with polymer gypsum drips and pools toward the bottom of the frame, while a singular form emerges at left. The composition resembles the cavernous forms of the Jeita Grotto, a system of two karstic limestone caves located in Jeita, Lebanon, that serves as a major tourist destination. “Women, Bronze, and Dangerous Things” - a captivating feeling of being present simultaneously in the past and the future. The futurism derived from an array of religions and cultures, mystical and real. A female figure, abstract but distinguishable, as an active participant of the historic timeline. Ancient (or future?) architecture, nativity scenes, faded out landscapes… You are immersed in this moment of time uniting the past, present, and possibly future. These are my feelings and thoughts while viewing this show. Diana Al-Hadid was born in Syria, raised in Ohio, and now resides in Brooklyn. Her work is about memories that we inherit, sense of belonging in the context of moves, immigration, and historic events. Quoting Kasmin Gallery: “Framed by a host of references from antiquity, cosmology, cartography, and architecture, Al-Hadid’s work gives form to ghostly images abstractly rendered in materials as various as steel, polymer gypsum, fiberglass, wood, foam, plaster, aluminum foil, and pigment.“ In short, a must-see.
