Com uma frequência incrível, sempre alguém me questiona sobre algum animal curioso, por conta da minha formação e paixão pelas Ciências Biológicas. No fim da minha explicação, a pergunta que eu recebo é, por exemplo, "mas para que serve o ornitorrinco?". Ao contrário do meu interlocutor, essa frase cai para mim como um paradoxo, pois o entendimento atual das filosofias que permeiam as ciências biológicas e dão sustentação para a compreensão da realidade é que as coisas existem não para um fim, mas o fim é a existência em si. E cabe a nós compreendermos essa existência e suas relações para uma vida mais plena e com mais condições de sobrevivência, pois somos parte disso. Mas eu tento salvar a pergunta considerando que a pessoa quer saber sobre o nicho ecológico do bicho, apesar de eu saber toda a carga histórica, filosófica e religiosa que há por trás dessa simples pergunta. • As implicações deste tipo de pensamento são graves, pois refletem a relação do homem com a natureza para as sociedades ocidentais, que, inconscientemente, consideram que o universo foi "criado" para atender as necessidades do homem que o subjuga com aval divino. • É um antropocentrismo denunciado por muitos filósofos e cientistas, como frequentemente Sagan apontava ao indicar a terra como um mero "pálido ponto azul" na imensidão do universo e como a nossa existência é tão significante para a imensidão do espaço e do tempo quanto um trinco em um grão de areia da praia é para nós. • Ao longo dos milênios, houveram diversas explicações teleológicas (estudo das finalidade) para a existência, especialmente através das religiões. Aristóteles se aproximou bastante dos conceitos atuais (com ressalvas) ao considerar, a despeito de Platão, que a finalidade das coisas terminavam em si, na sua própria essência e na busca pelo seu potencial natural ou sua forma ideal. Plenty of people share DNA with a spouse if they are from a small town, endogamous population, etc, and the companies don't always do a great job predicting relationships for these populations.
