The rabelo boat is a typical Portuguese vessel on the Douro River. It was traditionally used to transport casks of Port wine from the Alto Douro, where the vineyards are located, to Vila Nova de Gaia, where the wine was stored and then marketed and shipped around the world. The name Rabelo comes from the fact that instead of having a rudder, the boat has a large paddle in the shape of a tail, hence the name Rabelo. The R’s will be setting sail on the Douro River on a river cruise in Portugal this fall and also spending some time in Lisbon and Porto.
