Hi all, the last day is here, for raising the funds to purchase that last farm available before it is finally too late. And I so much wish I could bring some good news, but thanks to the late bidder and the complete silence from everyone who could have helped in any significant way - financially, or to spread the word - we are still nearly 200k off the mark. 💔 The vegan celebrity I mentioned did not talk about Heartstone on her show for some reason, which of course does not help. Just like the silence on Gaza is deafening, the lack of people in positions of power or influence using their tools, skills or connections to help is deafening, too. While I understand there are many, many sanctuaries, rescues, and individual animals - and of course humans - in need, the situation is rarely that disastrous. At this point a huge shoutout to @veganorganicuk and @vivacharity who were kind enough to use their platforms, and the (few) vegan influencer pages and sanctuaries who have shared in their stories, too. 🕊❤️ As always, too much to do to say more; eternal gratitude to those who have done their best to help, and especially those who are still trying. Still a few hours left for that miracle to happen, I guess. 😞 Please be so kind to keep trying! ✨ Be safe y'all. Humankind will have to become like the few of you who have really tried. 🐐 ❤️ Poor Gadget, one of our incredible rescued goats, had an unfortunate accident and broke one of his horns. Don’t worry, we’re taking immediate action to ensure his well-being. Gadget has been given pain relief, and we’ve carefully wrapped his injury. Poor guy! Our amazing vet will be arriving tomorrow to assess the situation and determine the best course of action for his recovery. This might not seem like an exciting picture. But to us it's everything. We've been monitoring Moz's poops every day since she came home the first time from Purdue. However, she's given us yet another good scare since she came home on Tuesday. Mozzy pooped a lot during the ride home....but hadn't defecated since. We sort of expected a few days with her car sickness. But as each day passed we got more concerned. With her hernia still healing, no poops could mean our worst fears coming to life. But Moz was still eating so we tried our hardest not to have a meltdown. And finally this afternoon Mozzy pooped!!!!!!!!!! 🥳💩 Did you ever think you'd be celebrating poops so much with us!? 😅

He has not given the other roosters any reason to dislike him but there is already drama. Will be interesting, when formally introduced. Muppet likes to be the last one in the coop at night. Muffin prefers to go in early and claim her spot🤣. However, she always goes back and forth, until Muppet is in for the night. Beautiful Wiley Wiley was part of a herd of stray goats living near GOA. The herd had been so neglected, that they had left their 'home' to go and find food. When GOA met up with Animal Control, they were allowed to rescue an emaciated female goat who had recently given birth and was experiencing issues, plus a baby goat, with issues with his back leg. He was newborn, and one of triplets, but the farmer reused to allow GOA to rescue his mother or siblings. Since living at GOA since the start of April 2024, his leg has improved greatly. Wiley is such a healthy boy, that he has already moved out from the house to live in Lawson's barn with the other goats. I am in love with this boy. So in love. One thing I hope for him. I hope that he never grows into those wonderful ears. They are MAGNIFICENT!!!!! 💕 💓 💞 @goatsofanarchy
Meet Gilbert. Gilbert is also a super sweet goat which is saying a lot given what he’s been through and the fact that he’s not yet wethered (castrated.) Gilbert was one of the first goats to approach me when we met last night and even let me give him a gentle touch on the nose. He’s got an impressive beard and his horns seem huge for his little body but they look like they’ve taken a bit of beating and the tip of his left horn is broken off. When you’re as cute and small as Gilbert is, it’s good to have a few war wounds. It makes you look tough and battle worn. I’m sure he’s going to impress the lady goats when he heads out to the goat pasture in a few weeks. He’s already impressed me. 💕💕 Third pic is Gilbert with Eddie.

Next up in goat introductions is Eddie. It’s hard to get a good picture of Eddie because the minute he sees me, he walks right up and puts his face in mine. He’s friendly and brave. Eddie is far and away the biggest of the new goats and seems to be a little older. He’s also the only male who has been wethered (castrated.) Eddie also seems to be the leader of this little herd (which makes sense if he’s the oldest and the biggest. ) To me, he looks exactly like the yen to Totes’ yang. He’s tall with long legs and even his horns look the same (well, back when Totes had both of his horns.) The only thing different is their coloring. 🤗 As soon as Eddie gains a little weight and looks a little healthier, he’ll be able to go out into the goat pasture where I’m very eager for him to meet Totes. Maybe they’ll hate each other but I hope not because they look like long lost brothers, or at least cousins. I’m only getting to know Eddie but even his personality seems very “Totes like.” 💕 Eddie came to us with that yucky ear tag. We’ll cut it off but didn’t want to be wrestling with him the minute he got here. I guarantee it bothers me more than it bothers him.

There has always been a lot of back and forth between farmers and sanctuaries about cows. I’m not here to tell you that a cow can’t kill you. They absolutely can. They’re 2000 pounds of grass-fueled power with spikes. People tell me all the time that they want to come for cow cuddles and that’s a big, fat no from me. I’m not going to invite visitors to come into the cow area. Not until they’re elderly and calm, and maybe not even then. I raised Maia and Arcus from the time that they were just a couple of weeks old. I’m their mom. But they’re still very young and playful, and they still think they’re the size of puppies. When they get excited and start bucking and running toward you, it is terrifying. They wouldn’t hurt me on purpose, but they could definitely hurt me on accident. Nicole and I know how to be safe while we’re working around the cows, but there are some days that we don’t even enter until after they’ve gone to the back pasture. Because individuals have different moods on different days, and we respect their autonomy. We love them safely. We plan our exits, should we need one. We snuggle over the fence, like this, and we still get stuck with horns, because that’s the way cows snuggle - with their heads. I was dragging the dry lot and Kathy’s not here this morning so I had to shoo Gladys away in order to get through the gate. After I drove the ATV safely out, I went to the gate to offer her a treat. Look at that face. She’s still irritated that I shooed her away so she’s trying to decide whether to “allow me “to give her a treat or whether she should stand firm to be sure I understand her disapproval. I don’t want to say what her decision was but I can tell you that I drove away with one less treat in my pocket. 😜🤗

Bella is a part-time farm dog. Sometimes she chooses to ride along and sometimes she prefers to lounge on the front porch. Today, she has joined Piper in supervising me. This seems a lot like every place I’ve ever worked - lots of people sitting around “supervising” and only one of us doing most of the work. I need to renegotiate my contract. 🤪💕

There are mornings at @poplarspringsanctuary that buzz with conversation, but there are quiet times, too, when we’re lost in thought as we muck, rake, and brush. The three roosters who accompany us - Enzo, Jacques, and Hector - sometimes make conversation impossible, however. They have a knack for knowing when we’re trying to talk, it seems, and instead of their melodic clucking and purring, start crowing so loudly that attempts to talk over them are futile. Nobody minds their interruptions, though; they are characters, each one of them, and Saturday soundtracks are a welcome relief from our weeklong routines. Jacques is especially endearing, the self-appointed welcome wagon, often running from the goat barn to greet us as we arrive. He’s the one mooning us in the center of this quick portrait, which I was compelled to draw bc it seemed a perfect illustration of The Rule of Three (lame pun intended). In fact, Hector reminded me yesterday that they do, in fact, rule; he was feeling frisky and ambushed me several times when I wasn’t looking. My calves are currently sporting peck marks that bear a slight resemblance to the Little Dipper. I’m a fan of the Rule of Three, although I only understood it intuitively until I looked it up. It’s an idea, not a rule per se, which is defined slightly differently depending on the context (i.e. art, literature, psychology, etc.). But the common denominator in all of its applications is this: three is the smallest number in which a pattern can be established, and humans process and remember information better through pattern recognition. We are neurologically prone to finding groups of three satisfying - it’s also the most efficient number in which repetition and rhythm can be employed, devices that facilitate comprehension. The Latin phrase “omne trium perfectum” means “everything that comes in threes is perfect,” indicates the ancients understood the Rule; art critics invoked it as early as the 18th century. Whatever the derivation of the Rule of Three, it makes sense to me. To Goldilocks, too. Enzo, Jacques, and Hector seem to get it intuitively, as well. Sting is 1! We were told Sting was a girl when he first arrived, it wasn’t until he went in to be spayed did anyone (even the vet) realize he actually needed to be neutered. 🎉OUR FSFS FAMILY IS AMAZING!! 🎉 Thanks to Laurel’s generous match for our goats and Deanne’s offer to help make up any shortfall on the tilt table and the dozens and dozens of you who made donations through our website, Zelle, PayPal and Venmo or pledged to send checks, we have enough to take care of our nine new goats in style - all of their food, hay, vaccinations, lice treatment, rabies shots, bloodwork, castrations (called wethering for goats) and a tilt table so that we can take care of everyone’s overgrown hooves with minimal trauma to them (or us.) It’s all covered (or will be when all of the money arrives.) I ordered the tilt table yesterday and I’m putting in a big goat feed order today! Unfortunately, it will take 3-4 weeks for the tilt table to get here but it’s going to be a permanent fixture and we’ll use it over and over again so it’s worth the wait to get one that will last. We’ll have to spend some time and money making the round pen and chute that we’ll be using with the tilt table “goat proof” and if you know goats then you know that will take some serious attention because goats can escape a maximum security prison. I have said it before and I will say it again, if you ever lose faith in humanity, just look at our FSFS family. We needed you, these little goats needed you and you stepped up and delivered like gangbusters. Sure, a couple of bad people neglected these goats for what appears to be a pretty long time since some members of their herd didn’t even survive the rescue but look at the hundreds of people who are rooting for them, donating for them, praying, sharing, doing whatever you can from a distance for them. Social media can be such a negative force but here, at FSFS, we see so much good from, literally, all over the world. 💝 We needed $5,000 for the tilt table and the nine new goats and yesterday we got $3,759! We had already received some money for the tilt table so yesterday’s donations and pledges got us there with enough to goat proof the round pen! We are overwhelmed with gratitude and we’re thrilled that 9 precious new souls are here and ready to live their best lives for the rest of their lives! 🙌🏻💕🥳

Tomorrow 5pm Irish time/12pm EST is closing time for the sale of the property I have put an offer on - the last and only half-suitable farm available - and a new bidder has emerged yesterday, pushing the price above the original asking price. As a result, we now still need to raise nearly 200k EUR, on top of what has been raised already - by tomorrow. 😶 I guess there is no need to say any more. 😞 Please do whatever you can to make it happen. We must believe in miracles - as magical as they are, they still require humans to do whatever is in their power. I can introduce one more of our new goats. This is Karen. 🤗 We brought 9 goats home last night. When animal control originally called us, they had 8 that had come in together but, at the last minute, they called about a tiny little stray, found by the side of the road. She wasn’t part of the original herd of 8 but they asked if we could take her. Of course I said yes. I mean it was already going to be chaotic with 8 goats so how much trouble could one more, small goat be? Well…. When the goats got to Dr. Jordan’s office, they needed to be examined, deloused and vaccinated and Dr. Jordan needed a way to create records for them so they were assigned names with our input from a distance. Little Karen got her name because she was “a Karen.” Apologies to Karens out there (one of my very dearest, oldest friends from college is Karen and she’s lovely) but, sadly, “Karens” are those people who “want to speak to the manager” everywhere they go. Karen did not want to cooperate with anything or anyone and wasn’t particularly thrilled to be housed with her new “friends.” She is definitely a small but mighty kind of girl. That being said, I don’t think she’s mean. She’s already settling in and relaxing a bit. We just have no idea about her background and it’s possible she’s never been around other goats before. I worried a bit about putting her in with the babies (who aren’t tiny but smaller) but I noticed right away that their mama, Suzy, was protective and Karen didn’t seem inclined to mess with the babies so they are fine. Tiny Karen may not have been part of the original herd of 8 but she’s in the same condition so we’ll feed her, love on her and let her speak to the manager whenever she wants to. 💕😜

I am not going to be able to introduce everyone tonight but I will, at least, introduce Matilda who is very, very sweet. Today is my granddaughter, Tillie’s (Matilda) fifth birthday so I told her we would name a goat after her. Matilda (the goat) is mostly white, very shaggy and totally deserves to be my granddaughter’s namesake. 💕💕
Oh my mercy! We are here and everyone is safe, sound and settling into their temporary quarters. It’s 9:00 p.m. and we haven’t showered or eaten so I’m going to give you the bare bones facts and then I’ll follow with pics which may not be the best but that’s all I can do. We brought home 9 goats - 5 males and 4 females. One of the males is already castrated. The other four will go back to Dr. Jordan week after next to be castrated (assuming that they’re all doing well and are healthy enough for the anesthesia. Suzy is the mama goat and Honey and Harold are her babies. They are old enough to be weaned but that are not yet. I simply could not bear to take Harold away from his mama and sister on his very first night here so baby Harold is with the female goats. The plan was to put the males in the little front sliver of pasture between the barn pasture and our house. Too bad there was no videographer there because it was pretty comical as Richard and I carefully got the four adult males out of the trailer and into that pasture while keeping the females in the trailer. But we did it! Then we drove the trailer to the barn where we are putting the females into a stall/paddock at least for the night. Just as we got them all unloaded and safely in their paddock, I looked up to see Sam, the llama, chasing the four male goats around the barn. Ummm, yes I did just say that we left them in the front pasture but they’re small and goats are escape artists and the barn was awfully interesting. So we managed to get them into a paddock on the opposite side of the barn. Everyone has food, water and hay so they’re happy as they can be for now. Tomorrow, we’ll figure out how this is going to work for the next couple of weeks until they can go into the goat pasture with the other goats.

Forest and Meadow! ❤️ We haven't shown too many photos of Forest with his nose all healed, but look how perfect it is! Back in December he got into a fight with one of our other rabbits and he had to have reconstructive surgery. It was a traumatic experience, but we are so glad he is back with most of his friends. We are still trying to integrate Thistle, but since the fight, it's proven to be extremely complicated. This is the most difficult rabbit introduction we have ever attempted. We are, as always, proceeding with much caution. However, since much progress hasn't been made we might be introducing Thistle with a different rabbit colony here at the sanctuary. Maggie giving me the stare down after I gave her her medicine this morning. 🤬🤪 We have an unofficial division of labor around here. Except for putting Ozzie and Harriet up at night, Richard is pretty much in charge of the chickens, ducks and geese. Last night, he was whining because he has to wrestle Bob, the duck, twice a day to give him his medicine. Naturally, being the sympathetic wife that I am, I pointed out that he wrestles an 8 pound duck twice a day and I wrestle a 500 pound pony twice a day. It was a mic drop moment. 🤪🤪
BIG UPDATE!!! WE HAVE A $1,250 MATCH FOR DONATIONS AND PLEDGES (if you’re sending a check) RECEIVED TODAY!! We are picking up NINE goats this evening - basically doubling our goat herd. I can’t give a lot of details but we were contacted by animal control in another county about some goats who were the survivors of a terribly abused, neglected herd. Some died before and after rescue. These goats include a mom and her 2 babies, a slightly older goat (Eddie) with arthritis and several others. ALL are malnourished, anemic, lice-ridden and have overgrown hooves. To say that they’ve been traumatized is an understatement. We told animal control to take them straight to Dr. Jordan who examined, vaccinated, began treatment for lice and started poor Eddie on medication for his arthritis last night. Four of the males need to be castrated but need to get stronger before we can do that. We’re hopeful with plenty of room to graze, good food and plenty of TLC, we can turn them around quickly. When we lost tiny Tinkerbelle (our baby goat with the cleft palate) in surgery, I knew there’d be another goat that needed us but I certainly didn’t plan on NINE at once! Dr. Jordan always gives us whatever break she can but with 9 goats who need exams, vaccinations, medications and lice treatment and four males who need to be castrated, she estimates our cost to be $2,500 and that doesn’t count all of the extra hay and feed we’ll be giving them. Sure is a good thing we are already fund raising for that tilt table because we’ll immediately put it to good use to tackle their overgrown hooves!
