Repost from @foxjensenmccrory • After swiftly installing Ariadne’s Thread this morning, we’ve been at two dramatic sites on the west coast of NZ today with Erin - Karekare and Piha. She has had a quiet smile on her face the whole time. Erin adores the sea… everything about it - and this is her first encounter with the Tasman sea and how it slams into the western flank of Aotearoa. As otherworldly as this landscape is for her, it makes sense with her paintings oddly. Swirling, turbulent, foreboding, relentless and you can’t take your eyes of it. We had dinner on the deck of the RSA overlooking Lion Rock and the Piha campground. It was defiantly New Zealand and it was good. Waitangi Day tomorrow so more nature awaits. #foxjensenmccrory #foxjensengallery #erinlawlor #erinlawlorpainting #openingsoon #painting #painter #nature #piha #karekare #newzealand #westcoast

Would love to see this amazing show @erinlawlorstudio @foxjensengallery You can hear Erin talking about her relationship with colour and her painting practice in an episode of @ageographyofcolour (link in bio) #Repost @erinlawlorstudio Repost from @foxjensengallery • Panavision Three grand triptychs form the “CinemaScope” backbone to Erin Lawlor’s magnificent new exhibition in the Auckland gallery. The wide embrace of these works achieves something akin to what Panavision sought to do in the mid 50s for cinema… place the viewer inside the “scope” of the painting and wrap your senses in a painterly version of cinematic overload. These paintings are immersive in their reception because they are clearly immersive in their making. Lawlor paints “alla prima”… so she too is held in the grip that time and viscosity allow. Given these restraints, she doesn’t dare waste either. Paint is driven on a wild ride that is emotionally and visually coercive for the viewer, where colour and gesture fold into each other, building a complex weave of space and tone that is equally turbulent and joyous. Alongside Erin’s smaller triptych Minataur (Dream) installed in the office is a vertical painting of Günter Umberg. Umberg’s text on Radical painting - Outside the Cartouche (1986) means a great deal to Erin and many other considered artists. Seeing her work along Günter’s makes it clear to me that the best works, like music, like profound attractions, are giddying experiences. There is a sense of vertigo about both their works. They invite you to step into a newly constructed space, over a conceptual ledge. Neither sit back and tell you what to think and then pat you on the back for decoding their message. For both Umberg and Lawlor the act of painting itself is conceptual. Gratefully, it is also hugely felt. Ariadne’s Thread opens Thursday evening at FOXJENSENMCCRORY in Auckland and on Saturday Erin will give a talk at 11am in the gallery. #foxjensengallery #foxjensenmccrory #aucklandgallery #sydneygallery #erinlawlor #erinlawlorpainting #opening #painting #painter #allaprima #cinemascope #panavision #günterumberg

Repost from @foxjensengallery • Erin Lawlor’s London studio is a partial refuge, where the contingencies and irrationality of life can be temporarily suspended. It is a place that doesn’t simply service imagination, indeed it is a place where she weaves a fabric using shared historical filaments.   These fibres entwine to construct a swirling, turbulent vortex that forcefully fuses pigment and energy so that the viewer, their senses and their soul, are tempted with the simultaneous risk and reward of stepping off the painting’s ledge. With no road-map evident - only the allure and uncertainty of a pathway leading into the maze - into the shadow spaces as much as the light.   In the 19th century folksy updating of the myth of Ariadne and the Minotaur, Hansel and Gretel’s father, aware of the threats that the labyrinthine woods held for his children, trusted in Ariadne’s shrewd approach to navigating the Minotaur’s maze – namely that a road-map in, ought to function as a reliable road-map out. Be it golden thread, pebbles or breadcrumbs, the updating of the fundamental notions of sensible orienteering are required to make it home safely. With the bonus of securing heightened self-knowledge as the by-product of such tests, the gamble feels worthwhile. Though there is a deep conceptual cohesion to Lawlor’s practice, her paintings possess an extraordinary capacity to reach across a panorama of identities. These paintings can be simultaneously lyrical and alluring, yet the seductive invitation they extend comes with a ‘fine print’ of peril. The risk of such committed ‘alla prima’ performances is undeniably hazardous to notions of certainty. This exposure is just one of the things that I admire about Erin and her work. Each time I have been in the studio in London I understand just a little more, the amount of risk that is involved in this open expression, this wilful vow of commitment to painting and its enduring communicative clout.   #foxjensengallery #foxjensenmccrory #erinlawlor #erinlawlorpainting #erinlawlorstudio #openingsoon #painting #painter #allaprima #gesture #colour #turbulence #memoryofafreefestival #londonsky

We have had the privilege of working with Erin for some years now and we are planning the next solo shows in Australasia. Aside from the interruptions of Covid there have been other hurdles that might’ve slowed or derailed others’ progress but not Erin. She is a fabulous and fiercely determined woman - intelligent, generous and she can really paint… and I mean paint. The “mash-ups” of thinly understood historical precedents that one sees all too regularly, mostly by relatively young artists whose knowledge of art history extends all the way back to last week - well they seem even less justifiable beside a painter like Lawlor. The atmosphere and aura of historical painting from Matisse back through Titian are quietly implicit in Lawlor’s painting. What is explicit is her confidence and capacity to get pigment and brushwork to collude in such a way that brings joy, melancholia, turbulence, sensuality together in an embracing welcome tempest. She paints head first into the panoramic storm and we love it. #foxjensengallery #foxjensenmccrory #erinlawlor #erinlawlorpainting #erinlawlorstudio #painting #painter #gesture #colour #turbulence #power #planning #studiovisit #importanttime

…so lovely to see this small work of mine hung in such great company (Prevert, Fromanger…), but also in such an extraordinary context, inside Jacques Prévert’s apartment behind the Moulin Rouge in Paris, where Quentin Derouet and Pauline Pavec have curated a delicate mix of works by artists both contemporary and historical in amongst the lively ‘fatras’ of Prévert’s own quirky and diverse collection 💛✨ 🙏🏻 @galeriepaulinepavec @quentinderouet #erinlawlorpainting #citeveron #paris #jacquesprevert #appartementjacquesprevert

Meanwhile in Australia with @erinlawlorstudio and @foxjensengallery 💥❤️💥❤️Repost @foxjensengallery with @use.repost ・・・ Feels like autumn this morning in Sydney. Yesterday was oddly warm and truthfully today isn’t chilly at all but the light and the colours are shifting swiftly. To mark the seasonal shift, we shifted some paintings. Koen Delaere’s glorious, edgy, push-me-pull-you painting, Hymneola, has thrown a small but welcome spanner into the relative calm. The pigment flirts with nigh-on toxicity and the wild edges where the polymer and pigment terminate like glacial moraine at the paintings edge is simply terrific. We installed another of Koen’s pieces recently here in Sydney in a beautiful home, and it was similarly transformative. Opposite Koen is Erin Lawlor’s magnificent triptych, Anamoi. It’s swirling and turbulent as her brushstrokes arc and fold in and out of each other. If Koen’s painting is filled with dualities – its north-south axis, its open interior and its laden perimeters, Erin’s painting is held together across its generous field, not by any implied stabilising geometry but by her unrivalled capacity to take us in and out of the fluid architecture of the painting as she lets us ride shotgun on the tail of her brushstroke. #foxjensengallery #foxjensenmccrory #koendelaere #erinlawlor #erinlawlorpainting #gesture #pigment #colour #scale #seasonalshift #rescueroki

…always lovely to see paintings out living their life - particularly in such good company 💛 Repost from @foxjensengallery • Feels like autumn this morning in Sydney. …and that’s a wrap. A few hours earlier than expected, an end to ‘Invincible Summer’ at Wellington Arch ☀️🌈 A huge thank you to the wonderful team at the Arch, and @apsley.house - and of course to @vigogallery as well as to all of you who made it over to see the show 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻✨✨ I’m so grateful to have finally been able to show my work in London, and I couldn’t have imagined a more extraordinary venue and welcome 🥰 ✨ #invinciblesummer #erinlawlorpainting #erinlawlorstudio #vigogallery #wellingtonarch #apsleyhouse #englishheritage #thatsallfolks
