American R&B soul singer Wilson Pickett’s fifth album, THE SOUND OF WILSON PICKETT, was released in July of 1967. The Atlantic Records collection was recorded at Muscle Shoals’ FAME Studios with Rick Hall, Tom Dowd and Jerry Wexler producing. Located at 603 East Avalon Avenue in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, an area of northern Alabama known as the Shoals, FAME Studios (Florence Alabama Music Enterprises) was small and distant from the main recording locations of the American music industry yet instrumental in what came to be known as the Muscle Shoals sound. The studio was established in the 1950s by Rick Hall, the Founder of Muscle Shoals Music. Owned by Hall until his death in 2018, FAME is still actively operating. Each of the Muscle Shoals musicians got their chance to try them out and jam with us. That day in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, ranks high among the most exciting musical memories of my life. Hatrack Tune Of The Week. Well, last week's attempt at 'cover to cover' fell a bit flat, so back to regular 'tune of the week' territory. It's incredible to think that the world lost one of the great soul singers, Otis Redding, more than fifty years ago. We have to be thankful for the music that he left behind and the huge influence that he had on future generations of vocalists. He is often referred to as the 'King Of Soul' and when you listen to him sing it's hard to challenge that assertion. For this week's tune we have selected Otis at his absolute best - raw and unfiltered. Dan Penn wrote 'You Left The Water Running' with Wilson Pickett in mind. However, Otis Redding was hanging out at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals (Alabama) and decided to record a demo version of the song. The tapes were left in the vaults and never found an official release until many years later. The power in this song lies in it's absolute simplicity - Redding's gritty vocals backed by a simple strummed acoustic guitar, minimal percussion and backing vocals. Proof that real soul music doesn't always need the big production number - although that can be nice too!
