I've been getting some questions on the topic of my new album's name, Sheila's Brush. Some don't know that it's a weather superstition most common over in Newfoundland. It is believed that a storm sweeps over following St. Patrick's Day, and I've certainly had my fair share of run-ins with it when I'm on my way to or from the festivities for a gig. It's seems there are very few though that know why this superstition is called Sheila's (also spelled Sheelah or Sheelagh) Brush. So, I thought I'd share what I've heard: St. Patrick was travelling along a dusty road in Ireland, It was a sunny, warm day and he soon became thirsty. Hoping for a drink, he knocked on the door of a small house. Inside was a woman named Sheila. She was busily washing a pile of laundry and was very irritated that someone had disturbed her. Patrick apologized and asked for some water. Sheila, still angry, took a ladle and dipped it into her wash, and said, "if it's a drink you're after...take this, and don't bother me again, I've got to get these clothes out on the line while it's still sunny." St. Patrick was shocked to be greeted so rudely. He looked at Sheila and said, "You’ll not dry your clothes in the sun today." He tossed the dirty water she'd given him into the air and soon after a storm came up, and Sheila was punished for poor behaviour — her clothes weren’t going to dry. I am really excited to be releasing another album of 100% original fiddle music! I consider my music to be traditional Celtic music, however there certainly are elements of classical and baroque music that slip in to my compositions! This time around I am using a drum kit (with the help of Karl Gans!) on the album instead of the more traditional instruments like bodhran. Overall, I would still consider this to be a pretty traditional Celtic fiddle album, there are a few personal touches in there for sure! @fiddlingfinn will be joining us at A Rite of Spring playing their gorgeous fiddle tunes amongst the herb gardens.🌿🌷✨ Finn Letourneau (they/them) is a professional fiddler, singer, banjo player and music teacher. Finn performs frequently with their other projects @clanna.morna , @ghostlyhounds and under the moniker ‘Finley Rose’ – the title of their solo project. Finn’s playing is melodic and intoxicating. They build a well of depth and heart in their multi layered compositions of fiddle and voice. Their music is ethereal and touches on the light and dark of our earthly experience. They bring new life to traditional folk music spanning many different regions – from Appalachian mountain songs to melodic Irish tunes. Finn will also be performing with their recently formed choir, An Gealach Nua or ‘New Moon’ Choir (more information about them to come!) We are so looking forward to both stirring and otherworldly performances – it feels fitting to have them singing us into the new season through the rite of Beltane.🌸 Finn studied classical voice and violin from ages 4 to 16 and continued their studies at the Canadian College of Performing Arts. I have a definite love/hate relationship with recording. I love the idea of it before I go to the studio, and I love putting the tunes together into medleys. It is incredible being in the studio with my fellow musicians and getting excited by all of their great ideas that add to my music. And then comes the editing... I very much dislike listening back to my work, going over it with a fine-toothed comb, and working on making the album the best that it can be. At this point you are really listening with a level of detail that you wouldn't usually use. Truthfully, I usually start doubting my ability and start thinking about quitting music. But, in the end, it's always worth it. I'm excited that now I can move on to having fun playing it live with my friends! It's been so many months in the making, but my Sheila's Brush album will finally launch early next month! One of my favourite things about learning a new tune is when I get to make it my own. And how do I do that? I add ornamentation. Ornamentation adds embellishments and flourishes to your playing, enhancing the beauty and expressiveness of traditional tunes. Common ornaments include grace notes, trills, rolls, and slides, each adding unique colors and textures to the music. Experiment with different ornamentation techniques, paying attention to timing and placement within the melody. Try listening to recordings of skilled fiddlers to study their ornamentation styles and incorporate them into your own playing. Remember, ornamentation should enhance the melody without overshadowing it. If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times! The magic is in the small sections. And if you think you've broken the passage down to a small section, make it smaller! A student of mine had hit a wall in her recital piece and wasn't able to break out of the learning phase to starting to polish the piece. I'd been telling her to break the sections down and work on the nuances in very specific ways, but this past week I spent the lesson just working through little ideas showing her exactly what I meant. The next week, you could tell it had clicked! She'd finally broken through the wall! I asked her what had changed, and she said "well I actually broke it down this week and, surprise, surprise, it actually worked!" 😂 Is it fun to practice this way? No, not really..... BUT, you'll see tremendous results at a much quicker rate! It's the difference between knowing a piece of music and really understanding it. It's the difference between reading The Lord of The Rings and immersing yourself into the world and all the extra books. So now the question is, how small are your practice chunks? Hi everyone, here's just a reminder of the advantages of taking online music lessons compared to in-person lessons: 🎻 Time saver - you save time commuting to your class and the expense of petrol and public transport costs. You can stay in the comfort of your own home or wherever you are situated. 🎻More flexibility - with in-person lessons the teacher and student's schedule must fit together to reach an agreement on where and when the lesson will take place. It becomes more flexible with online lessons, for both the teacher and student, since you are not restricted to standard business hours, you can schedule a lesson when it suits your availability. 🎻 More value for your money - online lessons are much cheaper than in-person lessons (plus the cost of travel). And in my case, you will always get music sheets and slow recordings of the tunes that I taught you and any other requested documents tailor-made for you and your needs after your lesson, by email or WhatsApp. 🎻 Increased independence - the students typically become more independent and more courageous in trying new things, as they feel calmer and more in control of what happens when they have the opportunity to receive instruction in the comfort of their own home. So if you have been hesitating between the choice of taking online and in-person lessons, hopefully I helped you in convincing you that online lessons have more benefits than you perhaps thought! ***Also, just a side note concerning music sheets for complete beginners, i use colour coding to help you get familiar with which note on which string you need to play.
