The Reel of the Royal Scots was commissioned by the RSCDS, and devised by Roy Goldring, in 1983 to commemorate the 350th anniversary of The Royal Scots Regiment. Established under Charles I in 1633, The Royal Scots is the oldest Infantry Regiment of the Line in the British Army and has served in many campaigns around the world over the centuries, including WWI and WWII. In 2006, the Regiment was merged with several other regiments and battalions to form The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, or 1 SCOTS for short. The double triangle shape in bars 1-8 are designed to represent the saltire, a diagonal cross taken from the national Arms of Scotland, and is said to be the shape upon which St Andrew, the Patron Saint of Scotland, was crucified. A dance a day… We’re nearing the end of our annual dance programme! Our second to last jig is The Shetland Shepherdess. This dance was devised by Ron Wallace, who, whilst on a trip to Oslo to teach Scottish country dancing, met native Shetlander Caroline Nichol, who was working as a shepherd(ess!). This encounter led him to devising the simply wonderful dance The Shetland Shepherdess in her honour. This dance and its accompanying music were dedicated to Susan Hagen, Ron’s host in Oslo, and to the Oslo Scottish Country Dancing Group. We here in the Dublin SCD club have been hosting the RSCDS Youth Mascot, Rowan. Counting down to the May Hearth Fire Session @scottishstorytellingcentre as a featured @edintradfest event. This month we invite storytelling legend and tradition bearer of the travelling folk, Jess Smith. Expect a warm character, haunting ballads and authentic folk tales of longing and natural kinship. On tunes we've got contemporary troubadour @sam_edward_gillespie, bringing his exquisite songwriting, a trad song or two and multi instrumental soundscapes. Celebrating the wider world of traditional arts we're bringing crafting into the scene as well. In old times, hands would not have been idle whilst the hearthside rang out with Stories and song, there would always be something to mend or make. Offering another thread of meditative visuals we have @katiewarner_basketweaver weaving a basket live on stage. She's welcomed as a continuation of the 'Basket of Stories' ...but more about that on the night. Last month we had a fantastic launch, and this month we anticipate great things too. Celebrating the old ceilidh, open hearth style, yet doing things a wee bit differently. Tickets are flying out the door for this one. A dance a day… Next up is our second to last strathspey of the evening, Miss Milligan’s Strathspey. This dance was devised by the RSCDS in 1973 and was published in Golden Jubilee Dances. Spotlight on... Ewan McBean 🎻 Ewan was born and brought up in Edinburgh, but is now based just outside Fortingall where he lives with wife Marieke and their two kids. Ewan started playing and studying violin at school. After a break from playing he has been performing Scottish traditional music for more than 20 years. Early in his playing career he received tuition from Marie Fielding and Mhairi Campbell. Ewan played and travelled widely including performances in America, Norway, Spain and various festivals in the UK. He also played at the prestigious music festival T in the Park for three years running.
