I am not a Christian-Athlete I’ve spoken on this before, but it’s really hit home lately. In college I used to kinda joke about the fact that our compliance officer used to tell us that we’re “Student-Athletes, because we’re students first- then athletes” because that’s just not how English works lol You wouldn’t ever say, “You’re a Blue-House, because you’re blue first- then a house.” The description always comes before what the thing really is. However, I had a realization a few years ago that I would do the same thing to myself. I would call myself a “Christian-Athlete” just like I would call myself a tall-athlete, track-athlete, brunette-athlete… So I flipped the script. I now tell people that I’m an Athletic Christian. It seems so silly and simple. But it’s amazing how the words we put on ourselves change our outlook on life. I’m a Christian, first and foremost, no matter what stage of life I’m in. And when I’m done being a pro-athlete my identity will not have changed, just the chapter of life I’m in. And when your identity is in Christ, the descriptions of where you’re at may change, but your purpose is solid. There is no fear in tomorrow. There is no fear in change. There is no fear. Period. Because God’s perfect love drives out our fear. Placing your identity and joy in something that can be taken away will always leave you empty, depressed, and purposeless. But in Christ there is freedom to truly live. Wolfgang Schmidt 66.06m 1976 I think perhaps Wolfgang’s technique was best in the 70s. He seems much more dynamic. He starts his throw off with relaxed wind, twisting back, stretching the arms and setting the X. He is bent in the knees and hips. His left foot turns all the way right. He starts the first turn by twisting the left foot around on the inside of the big toe and picking up the right leg early. From the side you can see how much his hips lower as he turns to face the camera. This action is what Wilkins describes as the 9 o’clock drop. It feels like your knees getting kicked out from under you as you sit and spin like in a swivel chair; shifting the hips/COG over the left foot. The lowest point of the drop is when the left toe is facing the camera. Notice the shoulders stay in X and the torso leans over the knees and toes bending at the hips. If you stay too upright you can’t get on balance over the left. This whole action pulls the right foot up and swings it wide around through the SA. He completes the turn around with the hips and legs and at the same time drops the left knee down low over the toe. Pay attention to where his hips are during the first turn. While the hips turn around and the weight shifts onto the left; the hips/COG never moves forward UNTIL his right leg is past the left and in the middle of the ring. He then pushes forward off his left foot and pivots the whole body together through the middle of the circle. Both his legs stay bent at the knees throughout the throw. The right foot touches down facing 0°, he pulls the left arm low, the discus up into the high point, and pulls the left foot/knee behind him to the PP. He actively begins turning the right foot into the left before his left foot even comes down. The right foot has 95% completed the turn when the left heel actually plants. The legs are bent/soft and he only pushes with the hips and legs once he finishes the turn completely. He holds X this entire time and along with the turning and patience before pushing really gets his hips ahead of the shoulder and discus into the throw.

@charlotte49ertfxc jacket circa 2010, pants and boots circa 2014. I’ve got other gear, but it doesn’t hit as hard. Also, throwing a 60m first place javelin. I love throwing more flexible javelins and trying to get super clean flights. Proves to me that I’ll throw further with a stiffer javelin. Saves my arm, too. Had a really nice session on Sunday despite the cold. Was really feeling my final right-to-left, arm was feeling good, and my rhythm has really been coming back. The main focus was on feeling the bounce and reactivity from my feet/legs, and timing that up with rhythm into the block. Rest is a part of your training plan for a reason. Every athlete gets excited to experience peak condition, and inexperienced athletes often fall into crowd-thinking where they believe that more training will result in more meters. In our training model, rest is a vital tool to training the nervous system to respond just so. Skipping rest skews training data and can delay, or even negate, peak results for athletes. So what does rest look like? Well, that depends on the level of athlete. High school and other young athletes need to embrace their developing athletic stage to build a strong, solid (and safe!!) base for growth in an explosive sport. Rest day activities should look like slow-paced grocery shopping, an hour of recreation at a park split between walking and bench sitting, or one hour intervals of house chores with sitting breaks between. (No, your parents didn’t pay us to write this. 😂) Video games do not count as passive rest- especially because most participants end up cycling their hormones through more stress than a training session! Rest recommendations may differ per athlete. When in doubt, ask your coach. Wolfgang Schmidt 18.54m 1973 Wolfgang was not only a tremendous discus thrower but a very good glide shot putter as well. He threw 19.19m in the same series to set the European Junior Record. He starts off by leaning over his right foot, bringing up his left leg, and rising onto his toes of his right. He then brings the left leg down and close to his right leg as he crouched down. Curiously he points his left toe up this whole time in dorsi flexion. He also stays up on his toes on the right foot until he begins to shift backwards towards the toe board. He drops his shoulders and hips as low as he can bringing the shot near to his knee and bowing his back in flexion. He then begins to shift his hips backwards and extend the left leg towards to toe board. He keeps his shoulders as low as he can near to the thigh and facing the rear of the circle as he kicks with the left leg and pushes off with the right leg at the same time. He lets his heel come down as he shift backwards and does a heel push. He also uses his left arm for momentum pulling it backwards with the elbow. His left leg kicks a little high as he drives across but he also really keeps his shoulders and shot low and directly over the right knee the whole time and never peeks. He pulls the right foot under him really well and turns it. Despite the high left leg he actually lands quickly with the left foot. As his left foot touches down he begins to open with the left arm and the left foot/knee/hip. His weight begins to shift forward and he turns the right leg hard. He keeps his eyes and shot really far back this whole time. His right foot and hips turn all the way towards the sector before he pushes with the legs at all. He pulls the left arm high and then drops the elbow down creating huge stretch across his chest. His leg push coincides with the transfer of that stretch in the chest into the shot. He really keeps the elbow high and out as he finishes the put. The shot then snaps out of his hand as he begins to reverse.
Athletes of the meet and most impactful from our home meet! Most impactful is Malie Cruz! Malie played many roles this weekend from beginning to end of the track meet. She helped out everywhere she was asked and also asked where else she could help. On top of running our awards stand she made sure to still cheer on her teammates throughout the day. This is quite the role for a freshman and she did such a great job! Gabe Gonzales is our athlete of the meet on the boys side! Gabe is a team captain, he is consistently getting better and supporting his teammates to do better as well. Gabe had 2 season bests on Saturday in the hurdles and stayed for his 300 hurdles even though he had to get ready for prom. He is a great role model for our younger athletes to look up to. On the girls side, our athlete of the meet is Victoria Holliday! Not only was she voted in by our coaching staff she also received nominations from other staff members that witnesses her willingness to help at the meet. Tia PRd in long jump and stayed consistent and within inches of her triple jump PR. On top of her athletic performance she stepped in without being asked to help us out behind the scenes making sure this track meet ran smoothly. Victoria is on the watch list for a state qualifying jump this Friday! Athletes of the meet and most impactful from the Sedona Invite! As you know, Kenzie Sullivan vaulted 9’0” and is now the sole holder of the BMHS record! Not only did she break the record, she did it immediately after running the mile. She also ran the 800 and 2 mile that day. Kenzie is a captain and a true role model of hard work and dedication, and therefore our athlete of the meet. We are so proud of her! Most impactful is Abby Ipson! Abby is always around cheering on her teammates, wishing them luck, helping them out, and painting their nails in the school bathroom before prom. This freshman class sure is special, we have a lot to look forward to. Male athlete of the meet is Daniel Gonzalez! Danny had a big day also running the mile, 800 and 2 mile. He set a PR in the 800 and had consistently good performances throughout the day. Danny is always supporting the team and working hard. We are lucky to have team members like Danny around! #NastyCats had a fun/competitive weekend in LA, competing against throwers from across the country and the globe, at the Beach Invitational, and the Cerritos Invite. Along with some Season Bests and Personal Records, we saw lots of technical improvements that will lead to big marks this cycle. Though it’s been a chilly/wet season for us so far, it’s starting to really heat up in the circle and the runway. Most everyone finished MUCH higher than they were seeded. How amazing it is that you can be involved in a sport enough to write sh!tty comments and yet know nothing about wind. Wind aka weather has always played a part in the performance of the discus throw. It’s an air foil. Most world records throughout history and all time top performances have been set in “windy” conditions. Using wind to your advantage and knowing how to really fly the discus is a skill that’s just as much a part of discus throwing as your footwork. For the last 120 odd years throwers have been arguing about which wind is best. In an event where wind can come from 360 different directions it’s tough to claim that it’s the only reason for success in achieving a far throw. Even wind from your favorite direction where it’s going too fast and/or you mess up will be detrimental to your performance. And if you think adding “wind aid” to marks which you consider to be set in “windy” conditions should happen. How exactly are you going to define that?
