The jewel of Iceland's "Golden Circle" region is arguably the Golden Falls (known in Icelandic as Gullfoss). This waterfall (or more accurately, two waterfalls) is situated in the Hvítá river in Southwest Iceland, roughly two hours from Reykjavík. The falls cascade approximately 35 meters (105 feet) down into the Gullfossgjúfur canyon. Geologists believe that this canyon was formed by a glacier during the last Ice Age. Hallgrímskirkja Church. This Lutheran church was built between 1945 and 1986 and it is one of the highest buildings in Reykjavik. Hallgrímskirkja houses the largest piano organ in Iceland, and it is one of the largest in Europe. The temple complex of Karnak is believed to be one of, if not the largest, religious complexes in the world. It is dedicated to the sun god Amun-Ra (see all the goat-sphinxes!), and It is said that it was where Amun-Ra lived with his wife and son during their time on Earth. Karnak was added to and changed by many of Egypt's ancient rulers from the end of the Old Kingdom to the Ptolemaic period (over a period of more than 1000 years). KV62 Tutankhamun. This tomb is arguably the most famous, despite being one of the smallest. This is due to the fact that the treasures interred with the king were intact, when the tomb was unearthed by Howard Carter and his team in 1922. This was exceptionally rare, as grave robbery always rife, even in the time of the Pharaohs. It is believed that this was not the tomb meant for Tutankhamun (rather for a high-ranking official or similar), but as his life was unexpectedly short (it is believed he was under 20 years old when he died), this smaller tomb was utilised. The funerary treasures from this tomb have been displayed in the Luxor Museum and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, but all will be moved to the new Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza when completed. KV9 Ramesses V & VI. This is my clear favourite of the tombs we visited: the colours are amazing, the hieroglyphics mesmerising, and level of preservation is exceptional. This tomb was begun by King Ramesses V (c.1147–1143 BCE) of the Twentieth Dynasty. It is unknown if he was buried here, but it is clear that his uncle Ramesses VI (c.1143–1136 BCE) enlarged the tomb and used it for his own burial. The tomb’s reliefs consist of various funerary texts to help the king in his successful transition to the afterlife. The first descending passages are decorated with the Book of Gates, Book of Caverns, and Books of the Heavens, ancient Egyptian books of the afterlife. The later passages have depictions of the king's soul being reborn like a God. ‼️Fun Fact‼️ For those following along, this tomb is over 3000 years old! It beggars belief that places like this still exist (especially when we consider the disposable nature of modernity). KV 11 Ramesses III. This tomb is one of the longest tombs in the Valley. It was originally intended for Pharaoh Sethnakht (1186–1184 BC), the project was abandoned when workers broke into the neighbouring tomb (KV10). Work resumed under his son Ramses III (1184–1153 BC), who was the last of Egypt’s warrior pharaohs, and the tomb was allocated to him instead. It is particularly beautiful, with amazing colours and details. The New Kingdom Pharaohs (1539–1075 BCE) realised that highlighting your burial location (like the Pyramids) was only aiding the grave robbers' efforts. To that end, tombs of most of the 18th, 19th, and 20th Dynasty kings were constructed in a nondescript valley, on the West Bank of the Nile, near Luxor. More than 60 tombs have been discovered in this Valley of the Kings and the nearby Valley of the Queens, occupied by kings, queens, and high-ranking officials. Tickets to enter the Valley of the Kings is EGP600, which allows entry to 3 Tombs. Some of which (Ramesses V & VI, Tutankhamun, Seti I and Aye) are an additional cost, but well worth the extra. Disembarking your chosen river transport in Luxor (known in ancient times as Thebes), visitors to the city can choose their own adventure. Spend some time relaxing by the pool in one of Luxor's many resort-style hotels, whilst making the difficult decision about whether to visit the East or West banks first. The East Bank is home modern Luxor, as well as the Luxor temple and Karnak Temple (which has got to be one of the best historical sites that I have ever visited). Edfu Temple. This temple, built in the Ptolemaic era, is dedicated to Horus, the son of Isis and Osiris. It is one of the best preserved structures in Egypt due to the desert sands that filled it over the centuries. It's many reliefs tell the story of Horus, avenging the death of his father Osiris, who was murdered and dismembered by his brother, Seth/Set. Sadly, it is also a prime example of the systemic defacement of the gods during the Roman Era. Abu Simbel!! This temple held up to expectations! Simply breathtaking! Like Philae, Abu Simbel was moved from its original location (some 200 metres away) to preserve it. It was cut into over 1000 30-ton blocks and painstakingly reassembled. It is dedicated to Ramesses II (Ramesses the Great), with a smaller temple dedicated to his favourite wife, Nefertari. Tickets to the precinct are EGP240. ‼️Pro Tip‼️ For many group tours, Abu Simbel is often missed or listed as an optional add-on due to its distance from other major landmarks. Trust me, it is worth the effort to get here! While cruising along the Nile, we were able to arrive bright and early to visit Kom Ombo Temple! This temple is unique in Egypt, in that it is dedicated to two gods: the local crocodile god Sobek, and Haroeris (Horus the Elder). The left (western) side of the temple was dedicated to the god Haroeris, and the right (eastern) half to Sobek. Within the complex there is also a museum dedicated to the 300-odd mummified crocodiles found nearby! The Philae Temple. Dedicated to the goddess Isis, this temple complex has Egyptian, Greek, and Roman era structures, built during the respective races' governance of Egypt. Sadly, it is one of many examples of defaced ancient structures, as when Christianity was introduced to Egypt by the Romans, many of the Gods/Goddess' likenesses were chiseled out so that people would not forget who they were supposed to be worshipping. In the early 20th century, the temple was moved to its current location, as it was being flooded after the construction of the first Aswan High Dam. As it is located on an island, the only way to access the temple is by boat. This is hands-down, my most favourite landmark that I have ever visited. The only remaining original Wonder of the World, the Great Pyramids of Giza, are truly a sight to behold. I had dreamed of seeing them since I was a child, so this day was magical. The sheer scale of the structures is mind-blowing, especially when you think of the monumental task it would have been to build them. Entry to the Giza Plateau is EGP300. Today, we leave Europe for my first foray into the African continent! On a site dating back to the Middle Ages, the Palace of Westminster (now commonly referred to as the Houses of Parliament) has had several iterations before being classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. Fire has destroyed (most of) the complex several times across the centuries, most recently in WWII, when the Commons chamber was burned out during one of the air raids. It was restored/rebuilt in the 1950s. For those interested in World War history (which should be everyone), France has many sites worth visiting. Personally, I find that having visiting many of the war memorials and cemeteries gives me a different appreciation for days like Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. I feel as though the numbers of the dead are a little abstract until you can physically see the row upon rows of thousands of headstones. It makes me grateful to have been born post-war, in Australia, far away from the majority of world conflicts.
