La Vieille Bourse, Lille, is the old building of Lille Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Built in the middle of the 17th century when the city was Spanish, the building was restored in the 19th century, and again from 1989 to 1998. Enough of Wikipedia sentences, Lille is a wonderful small town, not very far from the Netherlands and I think I would love to visit it again. The Church of the Saintes Maries de la Mer is a Romanesque fortified church built in the 9th century. Dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus and to The Three Marys, it is the subject of annual Roma pilgrimage. Inspired by the very popular Parisian covered passages, the Pommeraye Passage, one of Nantes iconic sites, was built between 1840 and 1843. It illustrates both an architect challenge (to drill in a dense urban area, considering the high slope of the ground) and an innovating project (the wanderer protected from rain by the glass roof, the gaslight postponing the sunset's darkness, etc...). It quickly became a place for Bourgeoisie to meet as well as a romantic place for idlers to roam. Abandonned by people when the large stores started to be developed (just like the Parisian ones), it will reconquer the pedestrian in the middle of the 20th and be classified historical monument in 1976. Mythic and poetic, the Pommeraye passage will be both captured and honoured through artworks from André Pieyre de Mandiargues, Jacques Demy and Jacques Tardi. The name comes from Louis-Ange-Hyacinthe Pommeraye, a notary who quit his office to invest in this project. Ruined by the French economic recession as well as risky investments, he died in 1850. Something really cool happened last week🤗 The apartment we live in used to be an 18th century (built 1713-1743), Catholic hospital. During the time of the revolution, it became ruined (1789) but was saved and remodeled in 1809, and then again worked on during the 1920s. I’m not sure how long the hospital was in service, but it acquired historical monument status in 2004, and was then completely revamped and turned into apartments. While searching for more info, I found out that somewhere on the property remained a small chapel that still contained artifacts, but we couldn’t figure out where it could possibly be. House of the Day – Villa Savoye Le Corbusier, 1928 – 1931 Poissy, France Villa Savoye is a modernist villa in Poissy, in the outskirts of Paris. It was designed by Swiss architects Le Corbusier and his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, and built between 1928 and 1931 using reinforced concrete. A manifesto of Le Corbusier's 'five points' of new architecture, the villa is representative ofthe bases of modern architecture, and is one of the most easily recognizable and renowned examples of the International style. Originally built as a country retreat on behest of the Savoye family, the house fell into disuse after 1940, and entered a state of disrepair during World War II. It passed on to be propertyof the French state in 1958, and after surviving several plans of demolition, it was designated as an official French historical monument in 1965 (a rare occurrence, as Le Corbusier wasstill living at the time). It was thoroughly renovated from 1985 to 1997, and under the care of the Centre des monuments nationaux, the refurbished house is now open to visitors year-round. In 2016, Heritage body Unesco added 17 projects by Le Corbusier to its list, including Villa Savoye and its gardener lodge in Poissy.
