El Castillo up and close. Check out the “feathered” serpent head next to me. The temple consists of a series of square terraces with stairways up each of the four sides to the temple on top. During the equinoxes which happen twice a year, the late afternoon sun strikes off the northwest corner of the temple and casts a series of shadows against it creating the illusion of the feathered serpent “crawling” down the temple. 🤯🐍 I wanna see this in person someday! The structure is 79 feet high, plus an additional 20 feet for the temple at the top. The square base measures 181 feet across. All four sides of the temple have approximately 91 steps which, when added together and including the temple platform on top as the final “step”, may produce a total of 365 steps. Equal to the number of days of the Mayan Calendric system. A 365-day calendar used by many of the pre-Columbian cultures of Mesoamerica for religious rituals and agricultural planning. It’s fascinating! El Castillo de Kukulcan is a Mesoamerican step-pyramid that dominates the center of the Chichen Itza archaeological site in the Mexican state of Yucatán. Built between the 8th-12th century AD. Want to experience a secret gem in the heart of Louisville? You have to know where to look as this speakeasy is hidden in plain sight…as it should be! 🚪🤫 Just steps away from Troll Pub in Louisville, you will see what looks like an entrance into an apartment, gallery or office space. You know you are in the right place when you see a white light fixture stating ‘Hell or High Water.’ (Just under the back entrance sign to Duluth Trading). Walk through the entrance and you are greeted with a door with a sign that states if it is closed, they are at capacity and only accepting guests with a reservation. If open, take a peak! Once down the stairs you will meet a host who will take you to your table (maximum reserved time is two hours). We were sat in the library where the plush leather chairs greeted us after a much needed rest of a long day on the Bourbon Trail. Soft music of Prohibition era jazz plays in the background, but not so loud that you can’t hear your friends talk. After visiting the beautifully designed bathroom, my friend asked if I liked the wallpaper. I said it was pretty…she said go take a close look. So I grabbed my glasses (because I can’t see detail up close without them) and took another look. Let’s just say, it made me giggle like a school girl.
