2015: A remarkable sherd of pottery from high in the midden overlying the buildings in Trench P. Incised cordons formed panels of different sizes, with the rectangular ones plain but others, including a triangular one adjacent, infilled by decoration,which appeared to be fingernail impressions. LiDAR – Penlan - Carmarthenshire DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Just above the city of Carmarthen I noticed some unusual surface features on the LiDAR. After checking on Archwilio I found that this whole area is called Penlan (after the farmstead, Pen-lan) and is listed as a possible Neolithic or Bronze Age necropolis. (PRN 226) The surrounding fields are populated by ploughed-down barrows, as you can see on the wide view. The main enclosed site is filled with features such as a ‘hengiform’, barrows and unusual square structures. On the Google context view you can see small buildings & a mast at the top-right of the field. This is an old cold war observation station (attached streetview image) & not used since 1991, but looking at all the guff all over the pylons it’s still in use I reckon. There could also be an unenclosed Iron age settlement just to the north. There has been no survey of this site so as it looked visually interesting I thought I’d share it with you. No recorded finds or excavations, hence undated* (Scheduled monument) Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Demetae *Morphology suggests Neolithic/Bronze Age date. A gigantic megalithic platform is located next to Van Castle in Turkey and may date to five thousand years ago. Inscriptions on two of the blocks are Urartian script. However, no one knows who built the gigantic cyclopean construction. It resembles other cyclopean walls that we see at Meydan Kalesi and Alaca Höyük in Turkey, and also sites in Peru, Italy, Greece and Baalbek in Lebanon. Located next to it are rock-cut hypogeum steps and other features that show a high level of stone-working skill. In tradition, this is the area of the ‘Garden of Eden’ and giants are usually thought to be the builders. La tomba dei giganti di s’Ena ‘e Thomes nel territorio di Dorgali. La sua datazione e del 1600 a.C. circa tra il Bronzo Antico e Bronzo Medio, la sua stele centinata ben lavorata e rifinita è davvero molto bella da vedere, anche l'esedra è ben conservata e si può ammirare il semicerchio con le dimensioni delle pietre che vanno a scalare in dimensioni. LiDAR – Pencastell (Llanwinio) - Carmarthenshire DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) 2.5Km NE of the village of Blaenwaun and hidden in trees at the tip of a promontory overlooking the (river) Afon Asen lies the heavily defended inland promontory fort, Pencastell. Outer rampart removed in the 1980’s. An OS survey recorded the entrance at the centre of this rampart. The middle bank was quarried in the past. The track on the western side is modern. On the wide view you can see I’ve indicated a possible IA circular defended enclosure. Interestingly, on the old OS map the forest directly below my indicated enclosure is called ‘Allt Cwm-castell’ which may be an old name for the missing enclosure? That’s gone off to DYFED HER so let’s see what they say! Grabhügel 27, Dölauer Heide, Halle/Saale, Sachsen-Anhalt Unter dem Kolkturm an einem Wanderweg in der Dölauer Heide befinden sich einige Steinkistengräber. Der Grabhügel 27 mit einem 8 m durchmessenden Steinkranz ist wahrscheinlich das schönste Monument. In der Mitte des Steinkreises befindet sich eine große noch gut erhaltene Steinkiste, die auf 2800 bis 2200 v.Chr. datiert wird. Am Rand des Steinkranzes befinden sich zwei Nachbestattungen in deutlich kleineren Kisten. 1933 wurde das Grab archäologisch untersucht. Im Hauptgrab wurde fast nichts gefunden, was auf Grabräuberei hindeutet. Am bemerkenswertesten waren die Grabbeigaben im kleinsten Grab 3. Neben einem schlecht erhaltenen Kinderschädel wurden zwei Keramikgefäße gefunden, die der Schnurkeramikkultur zugeordnet werden konnten. This is the Käferberg Steinkreis, a stone circle about half an hour, and a nice walk from the centre of Zürich. The stones were found in 1953, and then arranged into a stone circle. So the circle isn't ancient. But the stones apparently show signs of carving. So the menhirs might be real after all. Others think they were naturally formed. I don't know which version is true. But they look carved to me. And in any case, at some point people started using the site for solstice celebrations and the like. Anyway, Happy May Day, everyone!

𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗛𝗘𝗡𝗚𝗘 📍 𝘚𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘺, 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘵𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘦, 𝘌𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥, 𝘜𝘒🇬🇧 ᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁ Stonehenge es un monumento megalítico tipo crómlech, además de otros elementos como hoyos, fosos, montículos, etc., construido entre el final del Neolítico y principios de la Edad del Bronce, situado cerca de Amesbury, en el condado de Wiltshire, Inglaterra, a unos trece kilómetros al norte de Salisbury. Los arqueólogos consideran como probables las fechas de construcción de las distintas fases y utilización entre el 3100 a. C. y el 2000 a. C. El foso y montículos circulares, los que constituyen la primera fase del monumento, se han datado en unos 5100 años atrás. La datación por radiocarbono sugiere que la primera piedra azul fue erigida entre el 2400 y el 2200 a. C., aunque no se descarta que hubiera habido asentamiento o uso de la zona anteriores al 3100 a. C. El conjunto megalítico de Stonehenge, Avebury y sitios relacionados fue proclamado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco en 1986. Stonehenge era parte de un complejo más grande, que incluía círculos de piedra y avenidas ceremoniales. Las excavaciones realizadas por el proyecto Stonehenge Riverside, permitieron encontrar muy cerca de Stonehenge un asentamiento de cerca de mil casas que solamente se usaban unos días al año.. LiDAR – Pencaerau-bach - Carmarthenshire DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Overlooking the (river) Afon Cywyn 1.8km SSW of the village of Talog sits the heavily defended inland promontory fort, Pencaerau-bach. Traces of the trivallate ramparts extend underneath the farmstead to the SW. The internal enclosure looks distinct from the rest of the promontory but I’m sure it was all populated back then. Why waste space? Apparently most of the site was under dense woodland for most of the 20th century. On the other side of the valley, we can see the circular defended enclosure of Parc Yr Eglwys The first site visit in 1984 recorded a 1m high univallate bank. Crop marks reveal its entrance on the east side. Possibly associated with an old church or chapel as well. No recorded finds or excavations, hence undated* (Scheduled monument) Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Demetae *Morphology suggests Iron Age date. ТИПОН – ИНЖЕНЕРНОЕ ЧУДО ДРЕВНИХ ЦИВИЛИЗАЦИЙ В Перу в 30 км к юго-востоку от Куско расположен один из самых удивительных памятников строительства древней, канувшей в лету цивилизации – археологический комплекс Типон. Вне всяких сомнений, данный объект является жемчужиной инженерной мысли прошлого, представляющий из себя набор невообразимых архитектурных и технических достижений. Этот уникальный объект, по факту представляющий из себя сложный, высокотехнологичный, математически рассчитанный гидравлический комплекс, состоящий из нескольких десятков террас, построенных в том числе из мегалитов, выложенных полигональной кладкой с совершенной, работающей по сей день системой водоснабжения. И весь вышеперечисленный набор инженерных достижений раскинулся на склоне холма, на высоте 300 м над уровнем долины. Террасы Типона отличны от подавляющего большинства террас в регионе Куско, да и в Перу в целом. Обычные террасы, такие как в Писаке, Морае и пр., построены из грубых материалов зачастую с использованием связующих материалов, в то время как при строительстве террас Типона использованы филигранно вырезанные, хорошообработанные блоки, плотно подогнанные друг к другу и состыкованные, словно причудливая мозаика. С учетом высоты, на которую поднимались тысячи тонн каменных блоков, строительство подобного объекта на сегодняшний день стало бы крайне сложной задачей. Помимо использования дорожно-строительной техники были бы необходимы, станки с ЧПУ для придания нужных форм камню и логистика для доставки всех строительных материалов с последующей, заранее спланированной состыковкой всех блоков, которые не имеют единого стандарта формы. Официально строительство этого комплекса историки приписывают инкам. Якобы это именно они подняли тысячи тонн камня на высоту в 300 м, провели ландшафтные работы, продумали систему водоснабжения и воздвигли это "инженерное чудо". Однако, у технических специалистов вызывает резонное сомнение, что индейцы, не знавшие даже колеса, сумели проделать столь сложные, но необходимые для решения такой нетривиальной задачи инженерные и логистические процедуры без использования современных технологий. Это титанический труд на грани фантастики...

A few photos from the incredible and mysterious Dwarfie Stane on the island of Hoy. 🏴💫 Hoy Island is Orkney’s second largest and with amazing desolate and green landscapes. Sitting in a valley (between Quoys and Rackwick) is the enigmatic megalithic Dwarfie Stane which could date as far back as 3500 BC. A huge block of red sandstone measuring about 8.5 metres long is the Dwarfie Stane which is thought to be Britain’s only example of a rock-cut ‘tomb’. The stone has been placed there millions of years ago by Mother Nature. The ancients have somehow carved out an incredible chamber. An opening, three feet square, is cut into the stone and leads to the inner chamber. It’s carved with precision, the sides are very smooth and there are small ridges and grooves. The chamber contains two rock-cut spaces both of which are very compact. The space on the right has what looks like a ‘pillow’ carved into the stone. Red sandstone is very hard so the precision of the chamber incredible. The style of the chamber is not like anything I’ve seen in the UK and feels like something you would see in the Mediterranean. The acoustic properties inside the chamber are amazing. The chamber has a sonic resonance which felt very similar to being inside the the King’s Chamber of the Great Pyramid. Outside the entrance is a large sandstone block which was used to seal the opening. The tomb was still sealed in the 16th century. There are many legends and folklore associated with the Dwarfie Stane. As the name suggests one legend is a dwarf by the name of Trollid lived within it and it is also thought to be connected with giants who built it. Was it used as a tomb or for something else? The Dwarfie Stane is quite possibly my favourite megalithic site on the Orkney Islands! ✨️ Calanais Standing Stones - Isle of Lewis ✨️ What a sacred experience finally realising my dream of visiting in person and spending time at the Calanais Standing Stones on the Scottish Isle of Lewis. Sentient beings watching over the island, day and night, 365 days a year. Megaliths, Ancient One's, Wise One's. The Calanais Standing Stones are an extraordinary cross-shaped setting of stones erected 5,000 years ago. They predate England’s famous Stonehenge monument, and were an important place for ritual activity for at least 2,000 years. Approached with great respect and gratitude - they shared their codes and some sacred knowledge. The word Deò (Gaelic) is given to me. Deò is breath, but also air. It’s a ray of light, but also the vital spark of life. It’s vision, but not just sight. It’s vision that allows one to see beyond, even beyond the veil. And it is the place where a stream falls into the sea, where one life or path merges with the infinite, where we are all connected. Witches Night and Bealtaine Eve. Happy Walpurgis Night to all here who celebrate it. People often wonder if there is a connection or relationship between this night and Bealtaine? I used to write that European cultures seem to have similar ancient astronomically related feast days. Based on further reading I’d say now that it’s not just Europe, but the marking is worldwide. The associated geographical customs and traditions reflected both the turning landscape and changing seasons. It was a chosen point in the solar year to acknowledge the cycle of all things. While we can see many similarities between Bealtaine and Walpurgis, there are also differences. Walpurgis seems to have been a Christian overwriting of some of the many Pagan traditions, whereas Bealtaineis very much still Pagan. Many less known feasts also take place throughout Europe at this time which also celebrate and acknowledge fire and seasonal change. The Bulgarian shape-shifting dragon, Zmey, emerges at this time to protect crops and seduce young women. There were folk remedies to protect against his advances, including mixing wormwood and water and pouring this around a dwelling. Interestingly, like the fairies in Irish lore, the Zmey could summon a supernatural wind which could carry a person away to the Otherworld. FULL POST ON FACEBOOK. Link in bio. Suite de la série sur les différents ensembles mégalithiques des Bondons en Lozère Crépuscule sur une crête de la Cham des Bondons avec l’un des Menhirs les plus haut de cet alignement, environ 6m qui se dresse face au soleil couchant. LiDAR – Pen y Gaer (Sarnau) - Carmarthenshire DTM- (Digital Terrain Model, i.e. No buildings or foliage) Straddling an entire promontory 1.5km east of the village of Meidrim sits the very faint promontory fort, Pen y Gaer. The ‘Sarnau’ moniker is from the nearby farmstead. The defensive bank & ditch has been spread over the years by ploughing, especially since the 1960’s when the bank was recorded as being 1.8m high in 1967. No obvious entrance. Just to the site’s east, in 1967 a record was made regarding a spindle whorl that was recovered in 1948 ‘by digging or clearing out a very ancient ruin’. Gotta love those farmers! No recorded finds or excavations, hence undated* (Scheduled monument) Iron Age tribal association (conjecture based on location): Demetae *Morphology suggests Iron Age date. Ci sono siti archeologici che non ti stanchi mai di visitare, la tomba dei giganti s'Ena 'e Thomes rientra assolutamente in questa magnifica lista ❤️ S'Ena 'e Thomes è tra le migliori tombe presenti in tutta l'isola. Ci troviamo nella valle dell'Isalle a pochi chilometri dall'abitato di Dorgali. La tomba ha una lunghezza di circa 16 metri ed una meravigliosa stele centinata alta 3,65 metri. Parte della camera funeraria possiede ancora la copertura a piattabanda originale. 📍Cosa sapere: La tomba è facilmente raggiungibile percorrendo un sentiero di circa 5 minuti dal parcheggio. Fate attenzione alle frecce in pietra presenti per terra, vi indicheranno la strada più breve per raggiungere la tomba. Importantissimo inoltre è NON SALIRE sul monumento. Purtroppo anche quest'ultima volta ho visto persone caminare lungo i muretti dell'esedra e sopra i lastroni della camera.
