Friday Foliage: Coleus Vulcan This is Phineas the First, a coleus vulcan. Coleus are great outdoor plants, but can thrive indoors if they get enough bright light. Iโve neglected this guy - he got leggy because I didnโt fulfill his light and watering needs. He felt high-maintenance to me as he NEEDED to be right next to a window and watered 3 times a week! After 2 years, Iโve finally committed to giving this guy his best life. He was on the brink of dying 6 months ago, so I took cuttings and salvaged what I could, rooted the cuttings in water, then potted him back in soil. In just a month after potting in soil, he has grown a lot (he lives at the window and I keep his soil moist). I think in another month heโll fill the pot completely. I will keep up with his care. For a full and bushy indoor coleus plant with vibrant colors: ๐ฆ Water 2-3 times a week (keep soil moist; in these photo, my coleus needs another watering). Donโt let the soil get bone dry or the leaves start falling off and the plant becomes leggy. โ๏ธ Bright light. Put it right up against a window if you can. This helps it grow and helps it get its colors. ๐ Rotate the plant a couple times a week. Iโm rotating every 1-2 days. ๐งช Iโve never fertilized my coleus and Iโm not sure that you need to unless you want some crazy growth. โฐ Coleus grow very quickly with consistent bright light and watering. โ๏ธ Prune as needed. #coleus #coleusvulcan #fridayfoliage #foliagefriday #lillyandtheplants

We had a little tidy of Mr Lโs โshady shelvesโ that he made and I thought they deserved a place on the grid before the hostas take their vows (and become holy ๐). Iโve tried garlic, a gritty top dressing and even some copper rings, but at night the snails parachute in from the climbing camellia behind. We also did the first slug patrol by torchlight last night, found lots but not on the hostas! My back is still not good so Mr L has been helping in the garden this week and heโs rediscovered the jet wash (see stories- Bert loved it ๐ฎ). The tree fern has now been stripped of its old leaves and good old Spotty Dotty (pics 3-5) is trying to flower. There is some discussion with some philoโs that have pink variegation,peach color by conditions: to close to growlamp can create more unnatural color on foilage. ๐ฟ We all know a leaf to close to a growlamp can have burnspots or leaves will be pale. So which conditions your beloved plant is growing will be a factor. But the most will be the plant genes/how steady a crossing is-variety !! ๐ฟ For example with these and variegated micans. You can get really pinkesh or white leaves even by light and with many other plants as well. Especially variegated plants. ๐ฟ But a apricot color can come up with a caramel marble. That looks like pink a bit. โบ๏ธ ๐ฟ You can see 3 full moon leaves still. But the new fresh leaf has some green speckles. So i am always gratefull. If there is a mixed color= more energy then a full moon leaf.โ๏ธ ๐ฟ Caramel marble/ring of fire are in my experience more sensitive about overwatering and draft. Itโs evergreen so gives structure and colour all year round. The pink and red stems are subtly stunning, as are the glossy leaves and, on top of that, it produces white flowers in early summer. Itโs good for large clipped hedge balls and/or normal hedging. (Picture 1 and 2!) ๐ฟ Viburnum tinus - Why do I like it? Itโs a great pairing for lots of our Dig themes. Itโs evergreen as well and itโs flowering now so brilliant for spring interest. As well as that it also sports thick glossy leaf, gorgeous pink stems, and really is the most versatile of plants. Great for clipped hedging balls, traditional hedging, or even a multi stem tree approach. (Picture 3!) See you next week! Such a nice contrast. ๐ฟ This botanical philo is a crawler. Not a climber. ๐ฟ It has the most silky leaves and feel very soft even. But like other philo types. It needs a humidity of 65 % and warmth. Like some other philo types (melanoโs,verrucosum). They donโt like a completely dried up rootball. So keep your drained soilmixture light moist all the way. ๐ฟ The plant is getting to big for my growtent. So i need to choose. Friday Foliage ๐๐ฟ I recently got this new Monstera Thai, and Iโm in love ๐ฅน Yes, I do have another one, but honestly, with its high variegation, the downside is that it turns brown so easily, and therefore, itโs not as pretty. Y'all have a communal prop jar? This is my main one, which is a 1L pill jar I ordered for a semi hydro project which I never got around to. The brown glass filters out UV which helps keep down algae and protect those roots, although by the looks of things the water may need freshing up ๐ฌ I try to keep at least a couple of pothos cuttings in there, to help the root growth of the other cuttings ๐ช๐ช ๐ฑ Monstera Esquelto, Monstera Pinnatipartita, Scindapsus Silvery Ann, Marble Queen Pothos & Philodendron Atabapoense (all mixed in there)

I was so excited to get this bรฉbรฉ Ring of Fire last summer, and then (I believe literally) a few weeks later the prices on these began to crash and everyone was selling more mature, bigger specimens for less money than I paid for the bรฉbรฉ. ๐๐ค๐ซ Which will often happen, it's the nature of new plants coming into vogue and then flooding the market, but it's a good reminder that if you're patient the prices will usually come down. Luckily this bรฉbรฉ is very cute (look at that emergent leaf ๐) and I don't really need any more massive philodendrons taking over my home (which will happen anyway...) ๐ฑ Philodendron Ring of Fire

This is believed to be caused by animals such as deer, grazing on the Holly, and so the tree changes leaf shape, and becomes prickly as a means of deterrent. However, it is not only deer that enjoy holly, did you know it is also a valuable source of food for not only birds such as blackbirds, redwings, and thrushes, but also woodmice and dormice? They may look edible but they are in fact poisonous to humans, as well as dogs and cats. #ilex
