The white oak catkins have thoroughly blanketed this one-month-old front garden. After 30 years of turf, I think we can all agree it’s been changed for the better! 😊 Last fall, I brought in lots of soil and leaf mulch to suppress the turf and add topographical (and cultural!) diversity. I would typically top garden walkways with fresh wood chips, but I wanted a subtler contrast for this formal-looking house…so I opted for double-shredded oak. In late March, I planted it with a mix of native and non-native, deer-resistant perennials and shrubs. Let’s talk bugs! They are coming. Whether you want them to or not, especially as it heats up. Here’s what you can do. We are taking the organic approach here. Your first step is to remove them manually. Maybe you have one leaf covered in bugs or eggs, so remove it. Maybe it’s a hornworm-easy to remove. If that doesn’t keep than at bay, try an organic spray. On top of preparing for our spring plant sale last week, I managed to fit in Part 2 of a pollinator garden install at the NC School of Science and Math in Durham. The first installment was in the fall and the second installment was a custom plug grow that I started back in January. All in all, over 800 native plants were installed. The school plans on doing a pollinator census starting this fall to monitor how diversity and abundance change over time. This winter, I tried growing impatiens from seed indoors because I can never find colors that I like. I ended up with over 60 seedlings. I got about half in the ground yesterday. I have been busy preparing my dahlia garden. Since I grow around 1000 first year dahlia seedlings and plant around 1000 dahlia tubers, I like to use a thick 3.2 oz. woven polypropylene weed block fabric to help with weed control. I am using a handheld propane torch with a built-in regulator that allows you to hold the torch downward without the flame going out. My husband made the template out of scrap lumber and the holes are 9” across in diameter. For the dahlia seedlings, they are planted 11” apart. I do not use the sink pot method for my dahlia seedlings. I plant the seedlings directly into the ground. For my dahlias that are planted from tubers, they are 18” apart going down the row. With our hot and humid summers, I like to give my dahlias a little more air flow and space. Next, I will add my drip irrigation lines underneath the weed block fabric. I am almost ready to plant my dahlia seedlings that I started from seed in March. April is moving along fast.
