Lo store di Armani, realizzato dallo studio Fuksas nel 2009, si sviluppa su 4 livelli sulla Fifth Avenue di New York. Un’esperienza senza distinzioni nette, con una scala calandrata in acciaio che crea un vortice dinamico. I nastri della scala guidano i visitatori attraverso i piani, sfiorandoli appena, creando un’illusione di continuità. The MyZeil Shopping Mall in Frankfurt, designed by Doriana and Massimiliano @fuksas_architects (2009), continues today to find consensus and fascinate the users who pass through it. The building is like a river which, seen from above, has different depths, reaching the depths of the Earth. The structure of the project arises from a fluid form that connects the Zeil, a major shopping boulevard in the heart of the city of Frankfurt, with the Thurn und Taxis building in Frankfurt. The façade on the Zeil is sucked inside by a large void that makes one perceive the sky and invites visitors to enter as if they were sucked into a vortex. From the ground floor, users can access the various floors via a system of escalators and elevators, and directly access the fourth floor in 120 seconds via a 45-meter-long escalator. Worthy of note is the roof, which alternates glass and steel panels recalling the landscape of a canyon. Inside and outside the Admirant Entrance Building, created by Doriana and Massimiliano @fuksas_architects (2010) in Eindhoven. For years the building has represented a fundamental exhibition point for the Glow Festival in Netherlands, from 2017 with Dirk van Poppel and Jan Fabel and their “Blob the Bulb” until the last edition of the event. The project of the Admirant Entrance Building is based on an intensive form finding process whose result has prescribed for an unpredictable design: conventional design rules lose their meaning. Furthermore, due to the non-orthogonal shape, the Admirant is non-directional. Its smooth curves allow a dynamic flow around it. There is no front or back: the building envelope is experienced continuously. Looking at this from a certain distance, it is noticeable that the building is in a rotation. Perhaps a similar appearance to a marine mammal that rises to the surface, shows itself for the briefest moment, then sinks immediately into the depths again. Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Rho Fiera exhibition complex in Milan. Despite its closure and the end of Milan Design Week, I managed to sneak inside and get a closer look at the project. Doriana and Massimiliano @fuksas_architects designed in 2009 the Armani 5th Avenue flagship store, situated in midtown Manhattan in one of the world’s best-known streets. The staircase is the heart of the building, which connects the differents levels. Made of rolled calendar steel coated in plastic to enhance its sculptural effect, it is totally free-standing structure that defies any simple geometrical description, a swirling vortex of bands that barely touch each floor as they glide over the vertical surface of the interior, thwarting any attempt to define their geometry and statics. Nothing remains unaffected by this interior movement, not even the external façade. Though aligned with the rigid Manhattan grid, it simulates the building’s internal movement in images and colours projected onto a LED curtain. As well as being an external projection of internal space, the façade pays a special tribute to New York City, the yardstick of modernity and dynamism that all architects have to reckon with. The New Convention Center Rome- The Cloud by Doriana and Massimiliano @fuksas_architects is located in a strategic area of the EUR district and interacts with the surrounding architecture: simple and orthogonal lines pay homage to the rationalist architecture of the 1930s, which characterizes the EUR district in Rome. The urban context is characterized by a series of road axes and Via Cristoforo Colombo, the main road axis of the EUR, was the determining element for a series of spatial choices. Next to the Convention Center stands a building nicknamed the Blade, due to its narrow and tall shape which interacts with the towers of the former Ministry of Finance, which today houses the @hiltonromeeurlalama directly connected to the Nuvola’s conference activity. Independent and autonomous structure with 17 floors above ground and a total height of 56 meters, it houses 441 rooms, including standard rooms and suites, the latter distributed on the top two floors. From the full-height hall, 20 m long on the ground floor level, you can access all levels of the hotel with 6 panoramic lifts. The entire building is covered with dark low-emissivity glass, so as to better absorb the sun’s rays in winter and reject them in summer. The void of approximately 20 m wide allows you to see the Teca and the Cloud behind it, creating a glimpse of notable impact. The expansion of the Orvieto cemetery designed by Studio @fuksas_architects is the subject of a visit organized by @fondoambiente today, as part of the regional project “Contemporary Archipelago. Islands of Twentieth Century Architecture in Umbria”, aimed at raising awareness and transmitting the contemporary Umbrian architectural heritage, through visits to urban sites and architectural works built between the twentieth century and today. The heart of the project by Fuksas was the large ossuary in the shape of an inverted dome, poised on the circumference of the great path. In the center of the “cap” there is a “hole” and on the ground, below, the imprint of the sphere, almost as if anticipating the effect of a virtual fall. Aligned with this and moved by about 100 metres, the same footprint of the sphere has now become, in an impossible metamorphosis, a church. A church built on half a circle created by the footprint. In this case it is a simple shape: a semi-cylinder covered by a semi-cone. The wall sectioned by a cylinder is entirely made of glass. The rest of the project was designed in sections. The burial area must have had an almost magical light: it must have come from everywhere, varying during the hours of the day. The major Milanese exhibitions requiring complex logistics have been relocated to the new Centre, which has been going full steam ahead since 2005, offering businesses and visitors the best conditions to the utmost satisfaction of operators. The new Fiera Milano, located at Rho-Pero, neighbouring the northern area of Milan, was designed by architect Massimiliano Fuksas, and it was built in a record time of just over two years. The Centre hosts six single-level and two two-level pavilions, has about 70 refreshment spots and 74 halls for meetings and congresses: at the heart of the complex, alongside the service centre, lies a large congress facility with a plenary hall capable of seating up to 1,000 people. Each pavilion measures approximately 37,000 m2. The pavilions are connected by an elevated tunnel that allows visitors to move from one pavilion to another in a protected, air-conditioned environment. The Zenith Music Hall in Strasbourg, France, designed by Doriana and Massimiliano @fuksas_architects (2008) is like a strange orange-coloured object that came to light in the horizontal landscape, more like a sculpture (or a signal) than a space for music and culture. Starting from the centre, the heart of the space for events, you go beyond the flight of steps and the concrete and you arrive where there is an interstitial space, preparing you for the outside environment. The orange-coloured fabric, composed of glass fibre with silicone spread across two sides, is a transition and a filter between the large 20 m-high foyer, with its steel structure, and the outside. This sculpture, with distinctive non-parallel ring-shaped folds, is opaque at daytime and almost transparent at night-time. It turns into a magical lamp and makes the place stand out from all those non-places. So the party can begin.
