Spot the deco There’s an art deco cinema hiding somewhere in the first picture, to be honest it’s not very good at hide and seek so let’s just humour it and say that we spent ages looking and couldn’t find it anywhere. What a clever cinema! Well done! This is the Savoy cinema in Dalston or at least it was in 1936 when it was first opened and although it looks like it’s been all but obliterated, it’s surprisingly intact. If you compare it to the second picture it’s had the opposite treatment to most old cinemas. It has not been demolished to be replaced with a Lidl and nor has it had its auditorium bulldozed and a block of flats built in its place leaving just a facade, all that’s really happened here is that two shops have been placed where its entrance and foyer used to be. The building has had a chequered past, showing mainstream films until 1977, then functioning briefly as a Bollywood cinema, then an adult cinema and then mainstream again until it closed in 1984. Since then it’s been a snooker hall, a Turkish community centre, a restaurant, a snooker hall again, suffered a fire, been an events venue and finally a derelict building with thousands of pigeons setting up some sort of pigeon city in it. In 2018 it received a renovation grant and the pigeons were served with compulsory purchase orders and moved to Norfolk where they live very comfortably in bungalows by the sea that they bought from the proceeds. By the end of 2018 the Savoy had been cleared of all the debris and the stalls and circle areas had been renovated to create two performance spaces, holding 1200 and 600 people respectively. There’s also a restaurant that seats 200 and access is through the two side doors in the original picture which are hidden by the phone boxes in mine. Today the venue is called EartH (Evolutionary Arts Hackney) and hosts some big names in comedy and music, as well as community events. It even shows films again from time to time. So, although it seems to be hiding behind a tattoo shop and restaurant it’s very much a restored art deco cinema.
