Bali P7 : Scuba dive intro course taking us through the beginners lessons then down 12m into a world I have never explored quite like this. A little nerve wracking stepping out of my comfort zone and trusting my slow breath and the equipment that allows that to happen, but a wonderful experience with Rowan our British instructor. Today, 15 years ago, Jo and I arrived on Brighton seafront, having driven our tiny pink tuk tuk, Ting Tong, 20,000 km from Bangkok. Through the mud of Yunnan. Across the Gobi desert. Along the crumbling remains of Chinaâs Great Wall. Over the wind-beaten Kazakh steppe. Siberia. Crimea. The Channel Tunnel. The M25. I drove Ting Tong a few weeks ago (in Norfolk, where sheâs enjoying semi-retirement with my sister @bombay_sprout and her family) and oh! The memories that came whooshing back. At once I was buzzing across Xinjiang into a scalding desert wind, thudding over ruts in the mountains of Guizhou. I could see Joâs face in the wing mirror, puffing on a cigarette, and the press of curious faces every time we stopped. What a marvellous adventure that was. And to think that, when Jo first asked me to do this trip, I said no! I was afraid of giving up my cushty TV job, my (crap) salary, the flat I shared with friends. Fear wanted to box me in, keep me safe. Sadly, it took my dear friend Roseâs suicide to make me change my mind. Life is for living! I thought â and called Jo the next day. We were young and naĂŻve. There were no Google maps, smartphones or social media. No guides on how to do this sort of thing. We had no idea it was even possible, but were determined to try. That journey, and the things I saw, felt and experienced, changed the course of my life. And all because Iâd said yes, taken the riskier fork in the road. Thank goodness I did. Life is brief - donât waste it. Do what you love. Donât let fear stop you. Take risks. Embrace change. You wonât regret it.
