What seems impossible today will one day be your warm-up. This is true with any sports, even with art or any trade. Some people are naturally gifted, but as they say, practice makes perfect. I used to not consider myself slow, and I think I'm relatively faster than most people, but recently, I've been a little bit intimated with some people I hike with. You see, I never cared for labels or speed. I don't like competition. Hiking for me is enjoying nature. It's not even a way of workout or a social thing for me . I love the views and my quiet moments of refelections. I guess that's why I love solo hikes and travel so much. I'm not saying, though, that group hikes are bad. I love good teamwork and how people look after and encourage each other. When hiking with people who track their speed and time, I see it as a good way to motivate myself and try to be at the same pace. Don't give up! When you think of Belize what comes to mind? For me, Belize is unlike the rest of Central America. Here are the things that stick out for me: 1. 🏝️ Belize = Caribbean culture. From the moment I landed in the airport, Belize embraces Caribbean energy. The friendly smiles, the laid-back island vibes, & creole dialects 2. 🇬🇧English is the official language. (The only central american country) 3. 🫂 Diversity of people! Most Belizeans are multi-racial, with the majority ethnic group a mix of European and Mayan (mestizo). My teenage son and I set out on Hwy 1 to recreate a road trip that I took with my dad when I was a teenager. Mere hours before we reached Big Sur, a chunk of Hwy 1 fell into the ocean. The road closed. We went around. We backtracked. We happened upon a valley where a creek tumbled from high mountains into a jungle of calla liles. There were hundreds of them, all pointing to a boulder field and, beyond that, the Pacific. As I watched my son rock-hop to soft sand, a stranger approached. She had traveled from another country to visit Big Sur, only to realize that her plan was impossible. She did not complain. Looking over the scene, too dynamic to be documented, she said, "It's like a poem, isn't it? Lilies, all the way to the ocean!" The world changes. We change. But the coast of California is still among my beloveds. And, now, it is one of my son's favorite places, too. For us, the memory of that valley will always serve as a reminder that in this oft-painfully damaged world, there are still poems being written in lilies. THE MONASTERY - ED-DEIR Hidden high up in the rocky hills of The Siq in Petra, is "The Monastery". As a much larger version of "The Treasury", it was originally built as 3rd Century Nabatean tomb. At some stage, it was also likely used as a Church due to apparent crosses that are carved inside. Not just any hike,you walk through The Siq [a gorge], climb over 800+ odd rocky, steep steps along narrow ledges, pass many stalls of locals selling things as well as donkey's and horses along the way. Conveniently, directly opposite the site is a cave cafè! Which was probably one of the best things I saw in all honesty (aside from the site itself) considering The Monastery is a lot further than my brain thought and I didn't research beforehand. So moral of the story, always research before a hike ha! To celebrate my dad turning 60, we visited Myrtle Beach (his choice). My dad has never been a traveler and I think it’s safe to say that after this trip, he still is not a traveler 🤣 To stay: * We stayed at Sandy Beach Resort and while we had prime ocean views, I think the overall property could use some updates, so we likely wouldn’t stay here again. On a positive note, our suite had panoramic views of the ocean and a terrace attached to each bedroom which was perfect. * If we return to Myrtle Beach, I think we’d consider staying at Homewood Suites by Hilton or even in North Myrtle Beach To do: * 2nd Ave Pier: Our hotel was in walking distance to this pier. It was well maintained and the landscape was beautiful allowing you to walk right alongside the water for miles. You can find the Sky Wheel and the Gay Dolphin here! * Broadway at the Beach * Barefoot Landing * The Market Common To eat: * Peaches (2nd Ave Pier) * Crooked Hammock (Barefoot Landing) * National House of Pancakes (Yummy pancakes but WAY overpriced…I mean WAY!) To avoid: * If you are from the North East, I highly recommend avoiding the seafood buffets at all costs. We went to Captain Benjamin’s seafood buffet and it was god awful. I am not picky at all and I could barely stomach eating at this place. I imagine the other seafood buffets in this area are similar but coming from the North where we have some of the absolute best seafood, there is just no comparison and it’s better to skip in our opinion. 3 Hikes in the New Mexico Badlands for your Bucket List {SAVE for later} 1. Alien Throne + Valley of Dreams (image 1) 2. King of Wings (images 3, 6 - 9) 3. Valley of Dreams East (images 2, 4) ✨COMMENT “New Mexico hikes” to get a guide to each one with tips to find these formations ✨ All 3 of these hikes are relatively short and easy, but they do require way finding as AllTrails is not the most accurate (for King of Wings) and there isn’t a clear trail for parts of them. Take plenty of water - there is no shade to cool you off or protect you from the sun. Have a full tank of gas and all the food you need - there are no facilities anywhere nearby (that also means you need to pack everything back out with you). Your best bet for a hotel nearby is in Farmington, New Mexico. From there it is about an hour to an hour and a half drive to the three hikes. You will need 4-wheel drive and high clearance for the last part of each of these drives as the road gets deep ruts and may be impassable when wet. And how long will this site remain, with its stone pillars and moss-covered walls, new plants growing between the cracks each year? Once, up to 25000 people lived between these crumbling walls, under the shade of the pyramid and the watchful eyes of Chaac the rain God. Built upon the fertile Puuc hills, the Mayan people honoured Chaac by adorning the site with his image. Yet some historians believe a long drought led to the end of their civilisation, no matter how many sacrifices they gave in the honour of their rain God. With the global threat of declining clean water, I am beginning to understand their desperation. Stark, bright heat hugs me tight as I walk across the site, seeking shade beneath trees and ancient corridors. What will become of our civilisations today? Will future generations pass through our ruins and wonder how we lived and loved and what we believed? what WAS / WAS NOT worth the splurge on my trip to Japan 💹🇯🇵🌸 *brutally honest reviews made possible with @klookanz ✅ BUYING INDIVIDUAL TRAIN TICKETS With the JR rail pass going up 70% we saved money buying seperate tickets and that’s not even the best part! we were not limited by specific rail lines which meant we go to see and experience more unique parts of the country on our own time ✅ FIRST CLASS (GREEN CAR) ON THE TRAIN now we didn’t do this all time because prices do vary but for us, when the difference was only $10-$20 for those longer travel days, the luxury of reserved first class seats was a game changer. I found myself way more productive, comfortable and refreshed ✅ THEME PARK EXPRESS PASSES I completely understand that it can be rough seeing the express pass cost more than the park ticket itself (i’m looking at you USJ) but if you’re like me who feels like their time is wasted stuck in lines to the point you didn’t get value out of your base tickets… express passes are worth every yen. ❌ CHERRY BLOSSOM TOURS As you may have seen from my recent reels, I was blown away by the unique locations i never would have stumbled across myself if I hadn’t booked the day trip from Osaka. However, it was not worth it since it was a cherry blossomless tour thanks to this years cold snap delay making it impossible to plan ahead. ✅ HIRING A CAR AROUND MT FUJI Again, this is one of the splurges that ended up being cheaper than using public transport.
