😀👇𝐌𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐮𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐚𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: The 📸 is by Jean-Claude Golvin📌 Construction began in the 120s A.D. but remained unfinished at his death. The building has been utilised throughout the history of Rome, not just the Roman Empire, its walls served as a prison, papal palace, and now a museum. Its location is a testament to the eccentricity of Hadrian, especially when its compared to other notable structures like the Mausoleum of Augustus. There had been a well-known funerary practice of putting tombs along the main routes leading out of a city/town, thus it would keep the memory of the deceased alive. Hadrian’s Mausoleum unlike the other imperial tombs is on the right bank of the Tiber. However when Hadrian died in 138 the senate refused to vote him any honours and may have threatened damnatio memoriae; if not for his successor, Antoninus Pius, who managed to persuade them to changes their minds. The later life of the structure was initially its transformation into a fortress under Aurelian and it was in the 6th-century, when it was given its current name, when Pope Gregory had a vision of archangel Michael hovering over the castle, signifying the end of the plague. During the renaissance it was utilised as a dungeon, compared to the French Bastille, where many wasted away with countless bouts of torture and confined to cold, damp cells to ponder how they had offended the pontiff. One of the structures most famous incidences was the ‘Stand of the Swiss Guard’. When Rome was sacked on the 6th of May 1527, it was the Pope’s Swiss guards who held off the attacking troops of Charles V long enough for Pope Clement to escape through a walkway to the Castel Sant’Angelo. In 1901 it was decommissioned but Colonel Luigi Durand de la Penne and Captain Mariano Borgatti restored it, and after a 6-year restoration, it was inaugurated as a museum by King Vittorio Emanuele III. #romeisthelight #ancientrome #rome #history #ancienthistory #italy #romanhistory #archaeology #romanempire #spqr #ancient #travel #roman #romanruins #colosseum #ancientworld #archeologia #hadriansvilla #hadrianswall #eternalcity #storia #hadrian #castelsantangelo #papal #vatican

People often ask me about my favourite things. Which city. Which church. Which excursion. Which restaurant. I don't have absolute favourites as anyone who knows me knows...I thrive on variety and like mixing it up. #VILLAE #MiC #ancientarchitecture #ancientbuildings #ancientmonuments #historicalplace #ancientruins #archaeologicalsite #ancientbuilding #ancientcity #heritagesite #ancientcities #remains #villaadriana #tivoli #hadriansvilla #ancientdestinations #ancientplaces

It is the most imposing and complex Roman villa known. The complex contains over 30 monumental and scenic buildings arranged on a series of artificial esplanades at different heights and surrounded by gardens decorated with water basins and nymphaea (fountains). The whole covers an area of at least a square kilometre, an area larger than the city of Pompeii. In addition to the villa's impressive layout, many of the buildings are considered masterpieces of architecture, making use of striking curved shapes enabled by extensive use of concrete. They were ingenious for the complex symmetry of their ground plans and are considered unrivalled until the arrival of Baroque architecture in the 1600s, initiated by Borromini, who used Hadrian's Villa for inspiration. #hadriansvilla #villaadriana #tivoli #latium #italia #italy #unescoworldheritage #romans #hadrian #emperor #history #nature #architecture #archaeologicsite #travelroute

#hadriansvilla #adriano #emperor #livelikeanemperor #vitadaimperatori #walkingthroughbeauty #ville #sunnydays #happyme #glück #bluesky #archaeology #instagood #instagram #insta_archaeo #green #like #bestplaces

Dirty ol' gay daddy Emperor Hadrian, although married, decorated his luxurious villa in Tivoli, Italy, with the most excuisite marble reliëfs, depicting beautiful young men in heroic poses. Of course, the best piece of interior decoration was his lover Antinous, who was only in his mid-teens when they met. No OnlyFans evidence in marble survived. #hadrian #hadrianvilla #hadriansvilla #gaydaddy #gaydad

Among the ruins (and small museum) at Hadrian's Villa. What a sight this must have been back in AD 120, clad in marble, gardens blooming, with the emperor and his court in residence. Still a lovely place for a walk. #villaadriana #hadriansvilla #villaetivoli #unescoworldheritage

Roman Emperor Hadrian was one of the greatest architects of the ancient world. He gave us the Pantheon in Rome, several outstanding temples, and a rather long wall in the UK. He practiced his designs on the grounds of his villa in Tivoli. When I went to see his villa on a day trip from Rome, I was expecting the ruins of a large palace, but no. He had his very own city that was larger than Pompeii! The buildings were extremely opulent and covered in colorful marble from Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Egypt. Shamefully, it was plundered in the 1550s by Cardinal d'Este to decorate his nearby estate. The last picture in this series shows the only remaining marble at Hadrian's Villa. Can you imagine how stunning it must have been?!

I took these photos of the Maritime Theatre at Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli envisaging it in black and white which I think has turned out beautifully, but I also adore the coloured version. The site is breathtaking even now, 1900 years later - it must have been jaw dropping in its full glory. #hadriansvilla #italia #maritimetheatre #reflection #reflections #reflectionsonwater #photographylovers #artforsale #photooftheday #blackandwhite #blackandwhitephotography

#viagemdemaoitalia #vilaitaliana #italy #tivolitours #viagemdemaoitaly #italia #viagemdemaotivoli #tivoli #sitioarqueologico #imperadoradriano #ruinasarqueologicas #ruínas #hadriansvilla #villa #imperioromano #complexoarqueologico #italiancity #imperioromano #worldheritage #italian #italianplaces #canopo #roma #tiburtinehills @villaadrianamibac #imperadoradriano #villahadriana #romanempire #sitioarqueologico #patrimoniomundial #villaadriana #architecturalheritage #arqueology

#viagemdemaoitalia #vilaitaliana #italy #viagemdemaoitaly #italia #villaadriana #viagemdemaotivoli #sitioarqueologico #italiancity #ruinasarqueologicas #ruínas #italy #hadriansvilla #villa #italymuseum #archaeologicalsite #villahadriana #sitioarqueologico #romanempire #complexoarqueologico #canopo #imperioromano #worldheritage #italian #roma #tiburtinehills #imperadoradriano #italianplaces #patrimoniomundial #tivolirome #architecturalheritage #italiantour

Everyone needs to get out of town once in a while and get some fresh air, maybe go for a swim. This was even true for Roman emperors like Hadrian back in the 2nd century. His summer ‘villa’ at Este, 30 miles east of Rome is amazing, as are its many ruins that exist today. I doubt he used the long pool for exercise, but its fun to imagine they he and his friends might have used it for lap swimming. Antinous Scavenger Hunt so far. Still have a few more places in Italy, Paris and Munich for this trip 🤡 Not pictured are Hadrian and the many places he built. Outside of his villa because they found a lot of Antinous there. Note: I do not worship Antinous. I’m an Ancient Rome/Hellenstic Greece lover and Hadrian/Antinous are some of the more interesting historic figures. #antinous #hadriansvilla #villaadriana
