We're pairing two of @thirdmoonbeer best beers on record which is the legendary Born To Die Imperial Black IPA and it's aged doppelgänger Barrel Aged Born To Die Imperial Black IPA. It's been noted that the rare Imperial Black IPA is an art form that less than a handful of Ontario breweries have pulled off with excellence. Third Moon has, yet again, proved they can excel in more than hazies and slushies. We love the coffee and chocolate infused orange pith of the 10% OG. But paired up against the 10.5% abv BA version you really pick up how much this beer has transformed into something more than the OG after resting a year in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels. Heavy bourbon infused warming notes dominate and push back the pithy orange notes and enhances the chocolate and coffee notes. Heaven Hill 7 year bottled in bond while seeing @bellesglasgow at the brand new @brooklynparamount. Their whiskey selection is impressive for a music venue, including some vintage bourbon from the ‘60s. There’s a VIP lounge (pictured in shots 2/3) but not much need to pay for access to it with a ton of bars throughout the venue. Starting Saturday off with the Henry McKenna from Heaven Hill. This bottle finally started to get close to MSRP in my area. For a while this was considered allocated near me and was tough to buy and had a huge price tag I always passed on it. Now since it is at a reasonable price I had to pick one up and give it a try. Distillery- Heaven Hill Proof- 100 Age- 10 years Mash Bill- 78% corn, 12% malted barley & 10% rye State- Kentucky Nose- I get some really good classic bourbon notes with brown sugar, vanilla and some oak. I also pick up this apple sweetness that kind of reminds me of an apple fritter. Palate- brown sugar , vanilla and oak really come through for me with a bit of tobacco and rye on the finish. Overall- I had to give this bottle a try since it won whiskey of the year a few years ago. For me this is a classic bottle of Kentucky Bourbon. It hits the typical notes on both the nose and the palate. Yes this is a great bottle that checks all the right boxes for bourbon lovers. My only knock is the finish goes away a touch too quickly but overall a great bourbon. Is it my whiskey of the year…. Not sure about that but still a great bourbon. The latest release from a distillery rich with history & struggle is well worth celebrating as it highlights their Bernheim distillery location. This portion of their distillery portfolio, which was acquired from United Distillers just 6 years prior to the barrels that comprise this batch were filled, is a significant factor that led to @heavenhilldistillery becoming the largest family owned and operated distillery in America. How do you benchmark quality? • Oftentimes comparative tastings can be eye opening. Utilizing the notes from a previous review, or juxtaposing the score of a similar caliber bottle will help inform my otherwise quite standardized review process. • Blind tasting flights are another way of removing the inherent bias that can come with tasting expensive bottles. At an MSRP of $300, this Heaven Hill Heritage Collection 18 year bourbon certainly qualifies as expensive. One can easily find themselves trying to justify a purchase of that caliber by artificially inflating their perception of enjoyment. Removing bias is an important factor that goes into my writing. • “Older is better” is not a hard rule in whiskey. There are countless factors that go into influencing the final flavor you experience from the bottle. Even tasted blind, there is no denying there are characteristics of older whiskeys that can be easily identified. The barrel funk on this 18 year bottling is a distinct hallmark of that age but doesn’t automatically make it an instant classic. • I’m quite liking my first two tastings of the latest @heavenhilldistillery heritage collection release but you’ll have to wait for my full review as I need one more taste to reach my 3-try rule that I keep in my editorial policy (for good reason). It appears that Heaven Hill is bringing us a new and very special series - the Heaven Hill Grain to Glass! Now you might've gotten wind of this series - it originally started in 2017, and Heaven Hill has periodically done updates on how the project is progressing. As Heaven Hill detailed in a 2019 (the last we heard of the project!), each year unique corn strains are specially grown on a family-owned farm just across Heaven Hill's Bardstown headquarters just for the project and tested for yield and flavour. With each harvest, three different mashbills are created to test these small batch corn - a High Rye Bourbon, a High Wheat Wheated Bourbon and a High Rye Rye Whiskey. After distillation, they're aged at the Cox's Creek Barrel Preserve. Each is then tasted and tested. Let's take a look at what's to be bottled! 1. Heaven Hill Grain To Glass Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Beck's 6158 First up! We've got a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey distilled in 2017, using corn seed varietal Beck's 6158 (which as we've seen in the table above from Heaven Hill, has never been used by a distillery before, making it a completely unique American Whiskey ingredient). The Bourbon has been aged for 7 years, using a 35% Rye, 52% Corn and 13% Malt mashbill, which follows the distillery's High Rye Bourbon recipe that produces the likes of Rittenhouse Rye and Pikesville. It's bottled at 53.5% ABV (107 Proof). 2. Heaven Hill Grain To Glass Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey Beck's 6158 Next up! Also leveraging on Beck's 6158 corn seed varietal, is the Heaven Hill Grain To Glass Rye Whiskey. This is also distilled in 2017, aged for 7 years, using a 63% Rye, 24% Corn and 13% Malt mashbill which follows the distillery's very new High Rye Whiskey mashbill, from which we've only seen used in the 2022 release of the Square 6 High-Rye Rye Whiskey expression from the experimental Fred B. Noe Distillery, and was sold as part of the Evan Williams Experience. In any case this High-Rye Rye Whiskey expression is bottled at 62.5% ABV (125 Proof) - sure to excite folks! I submit to you evidence I remain a devoted, discerning bourbon drinker. I’ve said it before, but it boggles my mind that relatively unsung batches of ECBP like the A122 pictured here aren’t more universally praised. I mean, is every ECBP batch going to be a universal home run? Probably not — I mean, even I was underwhelmed by B521. But maybe we’ve become bored with greatness when it’s generally as bulletproof and reliable as ECBP is. I’m still somewhat unsure how Old Forester can sell 10 year old proofed-down bourbon for $115 with a straight face when Heaven Hill keeps peddling 11-13 year old cask strength bourbon for $80. Double blind battle tonight between the Heaven Hill BIB and the 1792 BIB. Every Wednesday I blind taste a matchup that I put together several months ago. I taste each one and pick a favorite. Glass 1 (Heaven Hill BIB) Nose- I get an apple note along with caramel and vanilla. Overall the nose is typical bourbon to me and nothing stands out Palate- I get caramel, some oak on the finish, vanilla, cinnamon and some rye spice. Glass 2 (1792 BIB) Nose- I get caramel along with some rye spice and almost a red vine/ Swedish fish note. This nose to me is sweeter than glass 1 and more inviting. Palate- I get brown sugar, red vines, pepper corn and some oak notes as well. Winner- Glass 2 (1792 BIB) Overall- to me almost from the start 1792 BIB had the upper hand. The nose was a bit sweeter and more inviting to me. The Heaven Hill BIB was good and nothing wrong with it but overall it was a bit boring next to the 1792 BIB.
