Is a private tour actually worth it? "We did a private group West Coast Wilderness cycle tour for 14 of us. Our second trip with Adventure South and some of our group.. their 3rd, due to their professionalism. Our guides Sue and Henry were outstanding, always thinking about the details to provide us with the best possible experience. Excellent explanation of the cycle trails and what to expect of each leg. We also loved the local hikes to Hokitika Gorge and Punakaiki Rocks. We loved staying at the local accommodation and got to experience some amazing local hospitality. Hokitika Gorge today in all its glory … there’s nothing that can beat the glacial blue waters that flow down off the mountains and through the tight gorge. The milky colour comes from ‘rock flour’ which comes off the stone. The swing bridge and 45min track are excellent. May we forever have access to pristine areas like this. Firstly thank you Hayley and John for taking care of us for 5 days, 4 nights. Two days in Greymouth and two days in Christchurch with our final day in Hanmer Springs. Day One starts the trip with our first stop in Murchison then to Westport for lunch, Omau Recreation Reserve, Cape Foulwind, then to Pancake Rocks, we timed it great to see the sunset. Day two we start the day at Shanty Town where we pan or our own gold... Jess had the highest gold pan. We enjoyed the train ride too. From a rainy walk around Hokitika Gorge ✨ The downside to film photography is that you never know how something is going to turn out. Sometimes almost all of the photos will be confusingly out of focus but sometimes you’ll strike gold. This is from a film full of gold (and lush greens and vivid turquoise).
‘Short Walks’, waar we vele blogs volgen die de lange wandelingen in Nieuw Zeeland op de kaart zetten lopen wij juist de kortere. Het rondje in de kloof is afgesloten door een kapotte brug, retourtje kan wel. En zo liepen we langs dit schitterend blauwe water. Het is echt genieten hier qua natuur, al genieten we ook volop van het eten en drinken!

Day 1&2 South Island Road Trip 🚐 At the end of April we finally made it down to the South Island. We flew from Tauranga to Christchurch and picked up our Jucy van at the airport. After stopping at Pak & Save and Countdown, we hit the road for a 3 hour drive through Arthur’s Pass to Rapahoe Beach Holiday Park where we plugged in for the night. The next morning, we were up early and headed straight for Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, then to Greymouth for lunch at Monteiths Brewery and finally onto Hokitika Gorge where the glacier water runs bright blue! We were trying to stay as busy as possible for day two as it was K’s best friends wedding day (@thebrookbiscuits for anyone that wants delicious personalised biscuits)… and she was feeling a little down. That’s the thing with travelling isn’t it… you see the world but also miss out on some of the biggest things. Whilst we were away we missed the hen dos and weddings of two of K’s best friends, the wedding of K’s cousin and the birth of K’s other best friends baby boy amongst many other things… some happy and some not so much! After picking up dozens of green rocks thinking they were gemstones, I ended up finding an actual piece of jade/pounamu/greenstone. We ran out of time to visit the carving studio in town where you can turn the piece into jewelry, but we vowed to return in a few months when we had more time to complete the rest of the West Coast. WEST TO EAST COAST To get to the east coast we chose to go through Arthur’s Pass. The views were spectacular, the weather on the other hand was absolutely awful, it pretty much rained the entire time we were there, and heavy too.
