Well, I be dammed a sight to be seen at the Hoover Dam! Got this beauty while touring the Hoover Dam. It is awe inspiring. One moment you’re in Arizona and the next Nevada. No literally the dam is split in half. • There stands two towers on the other side that will tell the time in each state. Did you know that Arizona does not follow the daylight savings time? • Arizona side has 9 generators, while Nevada side hood 8 generators. Both sides have a Pelton wheel generator that helps power the dam. • Hoover dam was built to help give electricity to those near the facility across the states. It generates over 4 billion kilowatts of electricity which helps over 1.4 million people have electricity. • Hoover dam is such an icon that well last for generations, centuries. It’s even believed to still be standing 10,000 years from today. Hoover Dam! Another overnight to Las Vegas with a little afternoon time to visit Hoover Dam, a construction ‘miracle’ and source of water for Nevada, Arizona and California. Named after Picture 1, President Hoover, the Dam was constructed between, Picture 2, 1931 and 1935, designated Picture 3, an engineering marvel, and it’s easy to see why. Carved out of sheer rock, it is imposing, magnificent and awe inspiring. 96 men and one dog (See Picture 10) died during construction from falls, accidents and other factors. Picture 4 the wide road goes over the top of the dam and has walkways on either side offering majestic views. Picture 5, the view from the top of the damn to the highway bridge. My phone camera can’t capture the sheer height over the water or the steep angles all around. You tend to get vertigo standing near the edge. The Dam is in two times zone, Arizona and Nevada and the borders are marked by Pictures 6, 7, the clocks. Picture 8, looking at the back of the damn where the water is ‘stored’. The White lines show the height of the water at one time. Picture 9, the visitor center with what looks like falling power line towers behind it. The power lines are mounted in sheer rock and were intentionally placed at that angle. Almost looks like a Hollywood illusion. Picture 10, the gravesite of the ‘Dam Dog’ who was found near the dam site when he was young, stayed there during construction, ran freely and was adopted by the workers. He was killed in an accident and they created the plaque and buried him on this spot. You can enlarge the plaque and read his story. There was some kind of equipment malfunction so the tours to the power plant were not available today. Most of the interesting stuff is below the surface.
