This is a collage of pictures and some footage from the Kolob Canyon section of Zion National Park that's located off of I-15 in Southern Utah, just after Cedar City, 17 miles to be exact at exit 40 and 40 miles north of the main section of Zion National Park. This section is often overlooked and less crowded than the main section but it is nonetheless, an underrated and beautiful section to explore. As I look back at the pictures from the National Parks in Utah and Arizona, I feel very blessed to have witnessed bits of the most spectacular natural beauty in the US. At the same time, I am contemplating the topic of holidays and their accessibility across different social groups. Looking way back, I clearly remember returning to school each September and having to participate in my teacher's opening ritual. One by one, each student would have to stand up in front of the classmates and share what their summer was like and where they went on holidays. In theory, it was a nice attempt at community building and sharing. However, unlike other kids, my family did not go anywhere. Each holiday, we stayed at home all summer long. So when my turn came, the only thing I wished for was that the teacher would accidentally forget about me. Of course, this wish did not come true. With full-on embarrassment, I had to share that, unlike X who went to Croatia, Y who visited Spain, and Z who vacationed by the Baltic Sea, I did not go anywhere. This seemingly harmless exercise caused immense fear of irrelevance and rejection. Now, being an educator myself, I reflect on how easily one can inadvertently draw lines between students, and I try my best to be more sensitive than some of my teachers. And you? Are you a teacher? Everyone asks, “Where can I see bighorn sheep in Zion?”… East Zion is always the best place to find bighorn sheep. Normally, they are straddling the cliffs high above the Mt. Carmel Scenic Drive, and sometimes they will cause traffic jams. We had the best luck in the late afternoon. The sheep are normally on the move a couple hours before sunset. One night we saw a herd of thirty sheep gathering just before sunset. Although, some nights we didn’t see any sheep.
